What types of Romance do you like the best?

When I started reading romance novels, which was further back than I care to put in writing, I read only Historical Romances. For decades I did this with one exception, Sylvie Kurtz. She was writing for Harlequin Intrigue at the time and was part of my critique group so I bought her books and devoured them. Finally, in the past few years I have expanded to Fantasy Romance, Contemporary Romance, Paranormal Romance, and (dare I say it) Erotic Romance. Again, it is because I know the authors and it has opened up whole new worlds for me, in some cases literally! If someone were to ask me what my favorite sub-genre of romance is today, I would be hard pressed to give a definitive answer. What types of romance do you like best . . . or can you say?

  1. I write erotic romance so I'm a huge fan of that genre but my second favorite is historical. Lisa Kleypas, Julia Quinn, Victoria Alexander, Eloisa James, the list goes on and on and on!

  2. Hi Nancy,

You write erotic romances? That's great! I just started reading that subgenre and find it fascinating.

You listed some great authors and they are so prolific you will never run out of books to read!

  3. I agree, Nancy, I read a Lisa Kleypas historical last weekend, and it was great. But I try to read spicy contemporary because that's what I write. Combining learning with pleasure - what a wonderful avocation!

  4. I love erotic romances but paranormals are where my heart is. I started out reading historicals by Jude Devereaux and Johanna Lindsey when I was in my teens, but it was Anne Rice that coaxed me over to the dark side.

I do try to read all of the subgenres, but I have my favorites. Sometimes I go through phases where I'll read all of the romantic suspense I can get my hands on or switch to sci-fi. With the endless variety, it's hard to stay faithful to just one genre.

  5. Hi Fallon,

Who said anything about being faithful to a sub :-) I understand the dilemma of liking so many. So many books, so little time, sigh.

  6. I love historical romance! I first started reading (I should say sneaking) the little Harlequin Romance my grandmother would leave all around her house. Then I moved onto historical romance and I would have to say so far they are my favorites! Julie Garwood, Johanna Lindsey, Julia Quinn, all are fabo! Although my fabulous sister had me start reading Karen Marie Moning and I am totally hooked. Bought all her books and just finished her new DreamFever. Wonderful. I can't wait for her next book ShadowFever. But back to my favorite types of books. My favorite thing about romance books is the humor between the characters. The dialogue and thoughts of the characters MUST MAKE ME SMILE or I just get bored.

  7. Hi Paige,

I know what you mean. I love it when there is some humor in a book, especially if it's natural. I don't need to laugh out loud, but I do like to smile once in awhile.
