Whim Plantation

If you read this blog regularly, you know that I recently enjoyed a week in Paradise (and believe it or not, still have the tan!) St Croix is chock full of history, having changed flags numerous times (England, France, Denmark, and Spain all colonized here at one time until the US bought the island in 1917) and their influences are seen everywhere (as a history buff, I LOVED this).

For many years, sugar and rum were the biggest exports so sugar plantations populate the island (or the remains of them). We visited the Whim Plantation Museum, the oldest sugar plantation on St Croix. To say I was fascinated would be an understatement. I learned things I never knew about the growing of sugar cane and the production of rum, things I could have researched online or at the library, but being there, seeing it all first hand made it all come alive for me (as some writers can do).

While walking around the moat, which encircles the main house (and no, it’s not a moat like I’d always envisioned but a structure used to circulate air and keep food supplies stored in the basement cool), feeling the cool breeze touch my skin, it came to me. An idea for a new story. And it happened so quickly as if that cool breeze brought the idea with it.

The idea has grown since coming home, but I may have to return to Paradise to do a bit more research!

As always, happy reading!
Marie

  1. Marie - I liked reading this and seeing the photos.

As a graduation gift to ourselves, a friend and I spent a week on St. Croix. The island was beautiful. I'll have to come back here again and find your previous post.

    Thanks for reviving my memories.

  2. Barbara,
I loved my whole experience on St Croix. Truly my idea of paradise--warm water, sandy beaches, perfect weather, incredible hosts! I can't wait to go back again! Thanks for stopping by (and by the way, it was wonderful meeting you at the Chocolate Affaire!).
