Guest Author Interview: Jordan Rose

Today we are interviewing Paranormal Romance Writer Jordon K. Rose. She is giving away a copy of PERPETUAL LIGHT.

Alexis: Hi Jordan, thank you for visiting Happily Ever After Thoughts :-)  Why did you decide to write paranormal romance?

Jordan: Hi Alexis. Thanks for having me on. I’m looking forward to meeting some of your readers today.

I decided on paranormal romance because that’s where vampires go! I have loved vampire stories since I was a kid. Since I love romance and vampires it seemed paranormal romance was my calling!

Alexis: Sounds like this is the perfect genre for you :-)  I understand your novel, PERPETUAL
LIGHT, was recently released. Can you tell us a little about it?

Jordan: Sure. PERPETUAL LIGHT is the story of a divine vampire slayer who has spent centuries avoiding her destiny because she didn’t want to kill her own husband. Now that fate has finally united them she has no choice but to free her husband’s soul and take him into The Light. Of course, years of disobeying have left her weakened, making her the target of a power-hungry vampire, hell-bent on possessing her.

Alexis: Wow, what a unique premise! Where did you get the idea for this story?

Jordan: It’s funny. I didn’t get the whole idea all at once. Instead, the two major points came separately. Lucia being reincarnated to find Vittorio came first after reading several other vampire stories- some were romances, some not. The divine slayer (Pharo of Redemption) part didn’t come to me for another year. I attended a conference and did some brainstorming with a few other writers and that helped get the ideas flowing.

Alexis: With such a unique storyline, I can see how it would take more than one point of inspiration. What are your favorite character traits of Lucia and Vittorio?

Jordan: This is a great question. Vittorio is so easy- similar to my husband, he’s very loyal and devoted. I love that about both of them. Lucia is a little more of a challenge for me. I guess I’d say it’s her refusal to do something she doesn’t want to do even though it puts her in danger. She’s made a couple of very difficult decisions that went against her entire being. I like that she’s strong enough to choose an unpopular path. However, she’s a bit of hard head in terms of just getting on with it. :-)

Alexis: Hmmm, I wonder if any of that has to do with her creator ;-) Now, you also write Urban Fantasy. Do you find the two sub-genres similar or greatly different?

Jordan: I find them similar in many ways with the paranormal elements and world building. But the focus of paranormal romance is the romance whereas a romance may come into play in an Urban Fantasy, but it’s not necessarily a major part of the story. I love both sub-genres, but I think I paranormal romance is my favorite because I love romance.

Alexis: I admit, I'm with you on the romance category. What can we expect next from you? Do you have any new releases coming or a work in progress?

Jordan: I have a few books brewing. I’m editing my first Eva Prim story about a vampire looking for friends and I’m writing the first draft of the first book in a more traditional paranormal romance series that will feature a different hero and heroine for each book. Also, the second book in the PERPETUAL LIGHT series is in the works. So lots going on right now.

Alexis: Yes, I'll say you have lots happening and that is great for your readers. Thank you so much for sharing your story with us. It's a pleasure having you visit.

Jordan: Oh, thank you. It’s great to be here. I appreciate you having me.

Alexis: For a chance to win Jordan's PERPETUAL LIGHT, be sure to leave a comment for her. If I have contact information, I will let you know when you win, otherwise, check the side column for your name on Wednesday under WINNERS :-)

Alexis: Check out this excerpt from PERPETUAL LIGHT.

Excerpt: This is the conversation Lucia and Vittorio have when she’s just awakened in his house after he’s rescued her from being attacked by Samuel, the vampire who’s stalking her.

“You love me. I knew it.” He grinned, sending fire shooting to my bellybutton and lower.
AAAHHH! Why are you doing this?” I marched to the bed. “Don’t you understand? What is wrong with you?” I slammed my hands on the mattress and frowned at him.
“Lucia, I know exactly what you have to do.” Faster than I could register, he sat on the edge of the bed, pulling me between his legs. “I know you must kill me. I’m well aware that because of me, you have not been allowed to rest.” His hands held my waist. “From the instant I learned what was happening to you, I began searching for you. For more than three hundred years I have searched, preparing for the moment we would meet, knowing what you’d have to do.” His eyes darkened slightly.
I squeezed his shoulders. “You want me to kill you?”
His voice deepened. “I didn’t say I wanted you to do it today. When you’re ready, I’ll be ready. We’ll get there together.” His head dipped and he blinked his eyelashes against my cheek. I squirmed, same as always. “Besides, you couldn’t do it today if you tried. You don’t know how to call the power or control it.”
“How do you know?” My hands slid to his chest.
“The last time I saw Samuel, he was feeding from you.” His fingers caressed my neck where Samuel had bitten me, and I winced. “One would think that if you could have called on your own abilities, you would have.” Little worry lines appeared around his eyes as he frowned. “You really are defenseless.” He turned my chin to examine the bite. “There’s no mark, but he ripped the muscles below. That’s why it’s sore.”
Beneath my palms, I felt his chest vibrate as a low growl rumbled.
“You must practice.” He moved me to the side and stood.
“What? How?” My stomach grumbled, and we both looked down.
“First, you’ll dress and eat, then we’ll practice. The shower’s behind the door on the right.” He pointed. “Clothes are behind the door on the left. Elizabeth built a wardrobe for you. I’m sure you’ll find something you like. When you’re ready, come downstairs. I’ll be in the kitchen.” He kissed my cheek and left me alone.
I stood staring after him. Practice? Practice killing vampires? How? How does one practice killing something? You either kill it or you don’t. And what way is nice? A stake, an ax, lethal injection? How? I flopped onto the bed, my face sinking into the pillow.

Alexis: Remember, for a chance to win PERPETUAL LIGHT, leave a comment for Jordan!

  1. Jordan,
I love the premise of your story. Imagine having to kill your own husband (although granted, who among us has not thought of it at one time or another....only kidding). Excellent excerpt! Definitely putting this on my TBR list.

    1. Hi Marie. Thanks so much for stopping by. I hate to admit that there have been those moments when I've thought... Just kidding! I can't imagine having no choice but to kill my husband. It's a horrible position! I'm glad you enjoyed the excerpt. Jordan

  4. Jordan,
I'm envious if you have time to create all your fantastic ideas!
Do you ever compare other paranormal writing to your own as in complexity, voice, and oh so many other things?

    1. Hi Dawn. That's a great question. Since I started writing I've noticed more technical points in the work of other writers and I try to figure out how to improve my own writing based on what I like in others. I'm not so good at comparing my work to anyone else's because I just don't seem to be able to notice things like my own voice. I've been intrigued by reviewers' comparisons but still not able to see them for myself.

I wish I had more time to write. I get up at 5:30 everyday so I can write for a full hour before going to work. I usually have little time to write in the evening because I can't seem to settle my mind after working all day. UGH!

  5. How great to have that much energy! I regularly eat spinach hoping for it.
I just put your name down on my list of have to buys as vampires are pretty hot!

    1. Does the spinach work? I've been eating more dark leafy vegetables lately anyway. If spinach works, I might start eating it daily!

Thanks for adding me to your list. :) Have a great day. Jordan

  6. I'd like to think spinach works...after a rigorous day I like to have energy left for reading!
On a previous post I mentioned that I lost my "buying" list, but at least I haven't forgotten that I just put Perpetual Light on it:)

    1. Hi Dawn. Thank yo for adding Perpetual Light to your list. I really appreciate it and I hope you enjoy it. I'm beginning to pull together my ideas for the second book in the series and am starting to get itchy about writing it, though I won't start until I finish the two projects I'm currently working on. There's only so much spinach and time! Jordan
