Each year, my Romance Writer’s of America chapter sponsors a writing
contest. Over the past ten years, I have had the privilege of volunteering to
be a judge. There’s something thrilling about seeing a the beginning of a
fabulous novel before anyone else, reading that chapter and recognizing the
greatness, knowing the author’s work is going to be chosen to be seen by an
editor or agent.
Now, you
all know of my fondness for historicals, and generally, that’s what I like to
judge, but this year is different. This year, I’m reading Fantasy, Futuristic
and Sci-Fi.
This is new
for me. And I am loving it! No cowboys, unless you want to count space cowboys.
No ranches or English manor houses, but spaceships and planets in galaxies far,
far away. Wizards and witches and werewolves, oh my! And let’s not forget
vampires…gorgeous, extraordinarily handsome vampires who make me want to tilt
my head to the side and allow him that soft spot on my neck….oh, sorry. Got a
little carried away there.
What was I
saying? Yes, I remember…..Fantasy, Futuristic and Sci-Fi. If you haven’t tried
this genre, please, do. It’s fabulous and you’re gonna love it as much as I do!

Did you always like Sci-Fi/futuristic or did you accidentally come upon it?

ReplyDeleteI came upon the Sci-Fi/Futuristics during the contest my RWA group sponsors. Prior to that, I'd read about vampires (especially if I loved the author) and a few other ghosts and such but it was sporadic. I do love horror stories but those are straight horror (like Stephen King). These vampires/werewolves, etc are so different....these are romances! And I love that! I still love my historicals and usually devour those like they're going out of style but for some reason, these contest entries really turned it around for me and I will be reading more Sci-Fi/Futuristic.
