Routines & Schedules

I am a creature of habit, as you already know. I admit that freely, knowing there’s no way to deny it. I live by my little routines and schedules, especially during the work week (I write in the mornings during the work week). I won’t bore you with all the details but it’s the only way to get everything done that I need to get done and don’t ask me why I need to get all these things done….I just do…..I know, I’m weird like that.
I tend to park in the same place when I go to the mall or grocery shopping (and yes, I pick up my groceries at the same two stores I’ve been frequenting for the past 20some years) *Sigh* I even like using the same pump at the gas station (Oh my gosh, I just realized how odd and kinda sad that is). That’s not to say I can’t use another pump….I can….I’d just rather use the one I like.
As you can see, I’m not much for adventure (I’d rather read and write about it than live it, which is, again, kinda sad too). Adventure just isn’t in my schedule.
What, you may ask, will break this routine-oriented, schedule-driven person out of her habits (which isn’t easy)? A spontaneous outing with my DH. An unexpected phone call or visit from a friend. Plans that have nothing to do with cleaning or cooking or working the day job such as a fun shopping day--even if I don’t buy anything….really, I’m happy to window shop….it’s the company I’m with that counts more than anything, although, it doesn’t hurt if I can find that perfect skirt or sweater. A breakfast, lunch or dinner date with a friend and a chance to catch up.
What else breaks me out of my routine? A good book. For a good book, I will smash my routine to pieces and let the dishes pile up in the sink. For a good book, I will forget about making dinner and just order a pizza. For a good book, I will even (gasp!) forego sleep (and I am already sleep deprived, like most of you)!
What about you? Do you have schedules and routines and die-hard habits. And what book would you recommend to make me lose sleep and forget about laundry?

As always, happy reading!
Marie

  1. I have a couple routines first thing in the morning because I don't function well at that time so I do the same half dozen tasks without thinking because I simply cannot think in the early morning :-( The last book I read I absolutely loved and it's called Rules for a Proper Governess by Jennifer Ashley. This historical heroine is a breath of fresh air. Try that one :-)

  2. Routine, who needs it?! I am far from routine as my work, writing, and activities go with the seasons and available time. If I get stuck in doing the same thing at the same time, I change it because what if I break a routine at some time?? That could be disastrous, so I refuse to get stuck in one and find out the consequences!
You pretty much know what I read as I do the reviews, but I do have John Grisham's Sycamore Row on deck as I heard it was great! I had started reading a Sandra Brown book I had just bought. After realizing it was a re-release, I was disappointed because it was obvious that it was written in the eighties. I hate getting fooled like that! Nothing wrong with an older book, but I thought it was brand-spanking-new, so I'll have to pay better attention:)
