DARK WARLORD by Cynthia Sax in Alien Alphas Boxed Set

Alien Alphas And Gladiator Games
By Cynthia Sax

I have a thing for fictional gladiators. If a story or movie has a gladiator-theme, I’m interested. I’ve watched the Russell Crowe Gladiator movie so many times, I can quote it.
It was fitting that Dark Warlord, the sexy SciFi Romance story I contributed to the awesome Alien Alphas box set, has a gladiator-type feel to it.

What do I love about gladiator-themed stories?

There is something sexy about fictional hand-to-hand combat scenes. I recently took a course on writing them from the wonderful Angela Knight and she shared that writing sex scenes and writing battle scenes were very similar. They are upfront and personal dances consisting of action-reaction, action-reaction. One fighter swings his sword. The other fighter blocks. One fighter steps forward. The other fighter steps back.

Because the fighting is done at close quarters, it is intimate. The fighter can read the other fighter’s facial expressions, can look into his or her eyes. During breaks in the combat, they can speak to each other, exchange taunts.

In Dark Warlord, this dance is even more stimulating as the hero is fighting the heroine. There’s sexual I-want-her-so-bad tension and combat I-might-die-right-now tension whenever contact is made. They desire each other but they are also trying to kill each other. There’s accidental and not-so-accidental touching. The taunts and comments have a sexual edge to them.

And there’s an exhibitionist feel to it. The audience is watching them, stomping their feet and chanting, cheering for their champion. Every touch, every word, every clash could be witnessed. Blades slice through clothing, exposing skin. Sweat beads on foreheads and chests. Fighters grunt. Muscles ripple.

That they might die at any time means the characters are fully in the moment. They’re not thinking about previous battles or what they ate for breakfast. They are concentrating on the other fighter, noting everything about her, the slightest angling of her body, the glint in her eyes, the set of her lips. Every detail is magnified.

This is why I love both reading and writing gladiator-themed romances. What do you love about them?
