Hostage by Annika Martin and Skye Warren

The premise of this story could be exciting, sensual, maybe intriguing.  I had a problem with the fact that the heroine, Brooke, started out as a well-off (or so the family pretended amid financial issues), spoiled, and hardly properly loved by her parents for a sixteen-year-old.

This is an adult novel, not young adult.  The hero, Stone, is in his twenties.  There’s the problem.  Hostage (Criminals & Captives, #2)

Granted, Brooke met Stone when he came to her sweet sixteen birthday party to kill one of the adult attendees.  The murdered man may have well deserved the beating, but I think the authors could have been made Brooke eighteen more appropriately.

Yeah, yeah, the actual intercourse, or manhood throbbing in the sweet spot between her legs didn’t happen until she turned eighteen, but they shared other well thought out sexual contact previous to this celebration.

In order to read this and find out “if” or “how” Brooke fell for the man on the other side of the railroad tracks, I pretended she was older.  The story made sense, then.

Brooke had everything material growing up, and Stone had nothing.  Stone’s story is sad and horrific, which led him to revenge.  Neither ever felt true love and together they find the missing link.

Happy reading,

Dawn

WHAT THE HELL DOES “NEVER” MEAN, ANYWAY?

Hey gang, how are ya’all?  Hope everyone had a fabulous Easter and that you’re enjoying your April immensely!

So, I’m here today to ask a question that has been weighing heavily on me.  What the hell does “never” mean?  And why does it not appear to mean the same thing to everyone?  Maybe you’ve noticed it, maybe you haven’t.  But I have, and it’s driving me freaking crazy!

Okay, let me explain what I mean.

Have you set up a new online account using Chrome as your browser recently?  If so, you may recall that you provided an appropriate User ID, and supplied a secure and “secret” password.  Do you remember Chrome asking if you want it to remember your password for you?

Yeah, I see you nodding.

So…if you’re like me, you are paranoid about ANYONE knowing your password—even Chrome.  Especially Chrome.  Like me, you hit the option “Never Save Password”.  Did you ever think about what that meant?

If we are talking about one password (this password), then the option doesn’t make sense to me.  If I’m setting up a new password, it is only a “new” password one time.  And most sites will not allow you to reuse that same password again.  So, when would “Never Save Password” ever apply in the case where it is singular and referring only to this password?  Never, by its very nature, implies the situation will repeat itself and you must decide now for all future iterations.

Are you following me?  I hope so.

On the flip side, what if they used poor grammar and really meant to say, “Never Save Passwords”?  In that case, I would expect to never see the question again.  How long?  NEVER!  NEVER EVER!

Alas, I have seen the question every stinking time I set up a new account.  So, is the error in the grammar of the option or is there another meaning implied?  What does NEVER mean to Google?  Exactly.

Because I can tell you it doesn’t seem to be the same as what it means to me.

Here’s another example—junk mail.  Ever find important email from someone (in my case, my publisher) in your Junk Mail folder?  More than once?  Like a million times?

Yeah, me too.  I click on the email and select the option “Not Junk” and it gets moved to my Inbox, only to have the next email from the same sender go to the Junk Mail folder again.  Okay, I get it.  I didn’t give them any rules beyond this one particular piece of email.

So, the next time I find an important message in the Junk Mail folder, I now select “Never block messages from this sender”.  There’s that word again—never.  At this point, any reasonable person would assume the function that manages this option has the ability to never block these messages.  Why offer if they can’t do it?

Did it work?

Noooo…it did not.  Email from that same sender at that same email address from the same IP address will again show up in your Junk Mail folder.  It is inevitable.  And you will again be offered the same ability to Never block messages from this sender.

Seriously?

So, what the hell does “never” mean to the people who developed these functions?  Does it mean maybe never?  Sometimes?  Intermittently?  Always?  Or only if the moon is green and the sky turns purple on a day of the week that ends in “m”?

Because it appears that ALL of these definitions apply—at least, in someone’s world.  Not in mine, but in someone’s.

And I can guarantee you that Chrome will offer yet one more time and your email will end up in Junk Mail yet again on the day that a green moon in a purple sky shines over a day of the week ending in “m”!

Who the hell thunk that up?

That’s my story, quirky and questioning, and I’m stickin’ to it.  Hang on tight now, ‘cuz we’re gonna go real, real fast!

Love ya,

Kayce

Veronica Reviews: JILTED PRINCE by Eve Langlais

Paranormal Romance
Jilted Prince (Hell’s Son #2)
Eve Langlais

4 Stars

“Some secrets are best left untouched.”

When the King of Hell, witchy potential in-laws and the undead have you by the short and curlies, what’s a Jilted Prince to do?  Become a Knight in Brimstone armor and go after his girl of course!

When Lucifer tricks his son into marriage, Chris is pleasantly surprised, more or less, to discover the bride is non-other than his wanna be lover, Isobel.  But Isobel is a witch not to settle!  She wants to marry for love, and has been waiting for her hero to rescue her from an unwanted marriage.  But when she sees the shock on Chris’ face that he was to marry her, she runaway brides his butt, leaving him surprisingly speechless at the alter!  How dare she turn down the Prince of Darkness!  But after seeing her flee, Chris is determined to prove to Isobel that she is the witch for him, and goes on a quest to help her find her dead (or undead) father.  But pesky obstacles in the form of the Four Horseman of the Apocalypse cause Chris and Isobel to realize their powers are stronger together…mayhap stronger than their families would like.

Eve Langlais has once again made this reader highly anticipate the next installment of the Hell’s Son series!  I’ll forever be #TeamLucifer, but never has cheering on the Devil’s son felt so wrong, yet sooooo right!  You won’t want to miss this one!  Highly recommend!

Sharing what I love,
Veronica

Changes to the Routine (or maybe not)

         Hello, gentle readers!
As you all know, I am a creature of habit, and a lover of routines with a deep fondness for schedules. Case in point, today is Sunday. I am currently watering my trees and writing this blog (barring laziness on my part, I try to write my blogs on Sunday so they’re ready for Wednesday…it helps to be prepared). I have already ironed my clothes (five outfits, one for each day of the week plus an extra, just in case there’s a wardrobe malfunction) and in a little bit (after I’m finished here), I’ll cut up my veggies and make my salads for the work week.
So, all that being said, what you might not know is that this love of routines and habits extends to grocery shopping, too (which is a Sunday chore). Mayonnaise? Always Best Foods (east of the Rockies, this is known as Hellman’s). Ketchup? Heinz, of course. Tuna? Chicken of the Sea. I very seldom vary from the brands I know and trust, but every now and then, I do try.
Sometimes with good results.
Sometimes―well―not so much.
Here’s an example of not so much. I tried, just last week in fact, to make a change. I bought (gasp!) the store brand toilet tissue after years and years of buying only Northern Quilted. What prompted this experiment? Let’s just chalk it up to a moment of madness!
Was it worth it?
In a word―No.
To counter that not so much experience, I needed something with good results so I read a “new to me” author—Lorraine Heath. I’d never read her before, but a friend had shared what a wonderful author she is so I just had to try one of her stories. And I loved it!
Needless to say, I will be going through her backlist! This is a perfect example of trying something new and being ecstatic with the results!
When was the last time you tried something new?

Until next time, remember to spread kindness wherever you go.
Marie

Excerpt:

They reached her store and he stared at her car parked by the curb. “Harper doesn’t know where you live or anything about you. That means you’re safe for now, but he’ll probably search this area to find us. Stay cautious, okay? Drive your car from now on. Don’t walk anywhere.”

“Why are you avoiding my questions? You can tell me anything.”
“Not this. If you trust me, don’t ask those kinds of questions.” He tightened his fingers around her forearm as she tried to jerk free from his grip. “Listen to me, damn it. You mean a lot to me, but I can’t tell you this. At least not right now. That’s nothing against you. It’s all on me. I just need time to take care of this problem. Okay? I’m fucking stressed, in a shitload of pain, and I don’t need you to hound my ass.” He dropped his hand from her arm and scowled as though he just noticed the dirt and blood on his knuckles. “I’d like to go upstairs to clean up before you take me home. I don’t want Alan to know what happened.”
Mia dug through her purse with shaky hands, so angry she didn’t trust herself to speak.
He took the keys from her before the little pieces of metal slipped between her fingers, and he hugged her despite the grime on his skin and clothes.
Tears clogged her throat. Her mind screamed at her to push away from him, but the strength in his arms enveloped her and stole her will. His heartbeat soothed hers, and she no longer cared about his lies or if filth caked him.
At least not at the moment.
“I never meant for this to happen, Mia. I will fix this.”
“I know, but at what cost?” She pried her face from his chest to stare up at him. “You’re nothing if not determined, but I’m scared and confused. You have answers to my questions, but I won’t hound you for them as you so eloquently stated. I just thought we got past this. I thought you knew I would never insult or condemn you for whatever it is you did.”
“And I thought you knew not to push me too fucking hard.” His deep voice sent shivers of unease down her spine. “I have to keep certain parts of my past to myself.”
“Whatever.” Mia finally pushed against his chest for freedom and stomped to the stairwell door.
 About the Author:
Writing is the fruit of happiness.
Amber Daulton lives her life by that one belief even though she normally isn’t so Zen.
As a fan of contemporary, paranormal, and historical romance novels alike, she can’t get enough of feisty heroines and alpha heroes. Her mind is a wonderland of adventure, laughter, and awesome ways of kicking a guy when he’s down. She probably wouldn’t be too sane without her computer and notebooks. After all, what’s a girl to do when people are jabbering away in her head and it’s hard to shut them up? Write! Nothing else works.

Blurb:  Newly divorced Professor Evie Brown notices her student Cameron Slade and how attentive he seems, so totally unlike her ex-husband. Cameron is also delicious to look at, all taut body, broad shoulders, and hot eyes. He’s forbidden territory, but one late afternoon as she pleasures herself in an empty lecture hall, she looks up to find she’s not alone. He’s there…watching her. And then there’s Sophie Walker. Ever since Evie met the sensual woman, she’s allowed her inhibitions to unreel, one by one. It’s Sophie who’s been sharing Evie’s erotic awakening, Sophie who she yearns for. Or is it? Amazon Buy Link  Excerpt:
I wipe clean the whiteboard, enjoying the push of the felt, swinging from side to side as I move, the squeaking sound it makes as it erases the past three hours’ worth of hard work. An image replays over and over—that unexpected reveal of Cameron’s torso—a handspan of bareness, the grooved shadow of muscle. It was a shock to the sterility of that lecture hall. My mouth waters. Bare, taut skin—that male skin, so much rougher, harsher than a woman’s.
Male.
I replace the lids on the markers and switch off the projector. Alone. Facing late afternoon emptiness.
If Cameron were to give me something I’d like... I’d like him, close to me, all sweet-sandy raw male youth, at my knees. Male.
I swallow back the desire that is starting to slither through me, stroking the space between my neck and collarbone. Cameron. I picture the way he ran his hands through his lightly gelled hair, the bulge in his arms as his hands extended behind his head. The soft curve of his lower lip. That vulnerable stretch of torso that was making my mouth salivate like a beast before its slaughter.
