Veronica Reviews - LAYLA by Colleen Hoover

Layla

by Colleen Hoover

3.5 Stars

“Perhaps what we desire can sometimes be so strong it overpowers our fate.”

Leeds is a musician and song writer stuck playing in a band that is slowly killing the muse inside him.  It’s yet another wedding they are performing, and Leeds is beginning to wish he was anywhere else but playing the same songs in front of drunken guests.  Until he sees the girl dancing like no one is watching and most certainly not to the beat of their music.  This girl…this beautiful girl with a passion for life…catches his eye…his heart…and suddenly his world is turned upside down…

Leeds and Layla embark on a whirlwind affair neither wishes to end at the end of the night.  So, what started out as a one-night stand turns into Layla moving in with Leeds where they become inseparable…until tragedy strikes these lovers down…

Can true love pass from one life to the next?  Do our souls recognize their other half?  How far are you willing to go to save the one you love?  Or to be with the one you love?  These are questions Leeds and Layla will face as they work towards overcoming a tragic event in their lives…one that will cause them to question everything they believe in…

Colleen Hoover’s LAYLA is a difficult romance to review in that if a spoiler is revealed, the mystery behind the romance is potentially ruined for the reader.  So, I will leave it to you, Dear Reader, to suspend what you believe is reality, and keep an open mind to the “what if’s” of finding your soul mate.  LAYLA is an interesting story with a bizarre love triangle I’d recommend to fans of this genre.

Death in Cold Water by Patricia Skalka

Back to one of my favorite places, Door County, Wisconsin.  The setting is real, only I hope the death never happens as in the novel.   The romance takes a good turn, so I'm all for that.

Dave Cubiak, former Chicago PD homicide, moved to Door County, a little New England, and is elected Sheriff.  Just when things should be festive, warm, and colorful in autumn, arrests are made.

Gerald Schnieder, heralded philanthropist, is missing.  Schnieder formerly ran a Home for wayward children, too.  When human bones wash up on the beach, Cubiak has an instinct they're related to Schnieder and not in a good way.

It would be nice to have Cate at home, but Cubiak knows she's on a photo shoot and isn't sure she wants to be around.  Their relationship still has a lot of work to be done along with secrets dealt with.

I enjoy the twists and surprises Skalka directs the mystery and the romance.  Hidden history and a pull of gossip give Schnieder a whole new persona, and a meaning to the bones.  Needing Cate's help with photos, there's an opportunity for a meaningful discussion.  Let's hope this leads to a solved mystery and a strengthened romance.

Happy reading,

I'm Losing My Voice

Hello, gentle readers! Happy New Year (yes, I know, I’m a few days late)! Hope you are all well and staying healthy.
I’m taking a well-deserved break from reading through my manuscript, finding mistakes, looking for holes and editing, as I go along. My voice is nearly gone (which pleases the DH no end, I’m sure) because I’ve been reading out loud. And there are a lot of words! I always do that because I can hear my mistakes so much better than I can read them (the brain is an amazing thing….if a word is missing or misspelled, the brain just fixes it). But it’s going well. I’m more in love with my hero and heroine than I was before! This is a good thing!
2022 is shaping up (I know, we’re only a few days into this new year) to be a great year (if I say it often enough, will it be so? I can only hope. I am a perpetual optimist and believe in the power of positivity).
As I’ve mentioned, I have finished writing The Maverick & Miss Miller. I’ve completed the synopsis, which, if you know me, is quite the accomplishment….I can write a 89K novel, but condensing down to just three pages takes perseverance, some tears, and chocolate…lots of chocolate! Oh, and ice cream! Can’t forget that! I’ve written the query letter so all that’s left is correcting my edits and sending everything off to my beta readers. I’m excited! It’s been a while. The last novel I finished is still just sitting here, waiting for me to get my butt in gear and do something with it (like maybe submit it…what am I waiting for?)
The day job is going well, too! Busy, but busy is good. Keeps me out of trouble (or maybe helps get me into trouble, I’m not sure which).
Things at home are good, too! I have re-landscaped my front yard and it looks lovely (I opted for low maintenance which means rock). Next up, I’m looking at a new gate (but need to save up for it first).
Well, my break is over. I gotta get back to reading.
Stay well! Stay safe! And remember to spread kindness wherever you go!

Veronica Reviews - Recipe for a Homecoming by Sabrina York

Recipe for a Homecoming

Sabrina York

5 Stars

★★★★★

“It was a beautiful thing surrendering to love…there was such peace in it.”

After surviving an abusive marriage, Veronica James is returning to her hometown to help care for her grandmother.  The comfort she finds in the familiarity of her grams bookshop as well as catching up with childhood friends is exactly what she’s needed.  So, when she bumps into her first love, Mark Stirling, she begins to wonder if she could possibly find love again…and what harm could possibly come from agreeing to test the waters by being “friends with benefits”?  But when Mark starts to want more and Roni’s past comes looking for her, these friends to lovers are going to have to decide if they are ready to put all their cards on the table and take a leap of faith or fold and walk away…

Dear Reader, Sabrina York’s romances are so heartfelt, and I’m so in love with this series!  This installment to her Stirling Ranch series shows no matter how broken one may feel, there is healing strength in being accepted unconditionally.  “Anything is possible if you just don’t give up...”

Loved and highly recommend!

A Scot Mess by Caroline Lee

A mess of doubles is what you'll find as Finn Oliphant and his brothers, half of them twins (Haha), looking for brides by order of their father.

Finn's father insists that the first son to sire a son will inherit the kingdom.  Great to have the kingdom, but Finn already has his mind on a beautiful lass regardless.

Fiona MacIan is the deal maker for her family, sister of a laird, where she bargains for materials and meats.  She and Finn encountered each other over an ale after an afternoon of bargaining, with laughs and blushes, and a kiss.

After a long wait over many miles, Finn calls on Fiona.  He wants to wed her and bring her to his land.

Fiona is ecstatic and nervous all at the same time.  What if he's not what she remembers?  What if he doesn't feel the same about her anymore?  Fiona's identical twin sister accompanies her.

How can a multitude of identical twins figure out who they're talking with, or who they're kissing?  Let's leave it at that.

Mixed hearts or mixed twins, the blunders and misconceptions mount.  Read this delightful story to find out who knows who their match is.

Happy reading,

Dawn
