Interview with Anne Marie Becker and a Giveaway

Alexis: Today we have Romantic Suspense author, Anne Marie Becker and she's here with a giveaway!  Don’t forget to leave a comment for a chance to win :-)

Welcome, Anne Marie. Everyone has their own writing process…how they come up with ideas, how they name their characters, etc. Can you describe your writing process?

Anne Marie: My ideas come from many places—dreams, the news, real life. Sometimes a story begins with a character “speaking” to me. Sometimes it’s a scene, a plot point or an interesting twist. I find the first few chapters the easiest, when I’m getting to know my characters and just having fun. Then I try to plot the major points in the story and write the first draft as fast as possible. My process usually involves several rounds of editing, especially since I write dark, twisted psychological romantic suspense and sometimes the twists don’t come to me until I’ve edited a bit.

Alexis: It’s good to know those psychological twists don’t come naturally ;-) What are you working on now?

Anne Marie: I’m writing the final installment in my Mindhunters series, END GAME. While each of the six books are standalones with happy-ever-afters, there’s a decades-old murder mystery running through the entire series that will be wrapped up in this final book. I’m hoping to release it by the end of the year.

Alexis: That’s awesome!  I know your readers can’t wait! Why did you choose this sub-genre of romance?

Anne Marie: I grew up reading mysteries, thrillers, and horror. And then I discovered romance novels. Romantic suspense blends the best of two worlds. In fact, love is a type of suspense in and of itself. It can be as much a thrill as danger. The suspense of falling in love, the anticipation of a first touch, the thought that at any moment you could lose everything… These are things that keep readers like me turning the pages.

Alexis: What a great point. I never thought of love that way before.

What has been the most memorable fan comment you ever had?

Anne Marie: I was thrilled when a reader told me she’d reread the entire series (the books that are available) a couple times already. Such interest in my characters and series is a major compliment.

Alexis: Oh wow. That really is. What are your favorite traits of Catherine and Max in your recent release ACCEPTABLE RISK?

Anne Marie: Catherine is a nurturer, but she has a dark secret that haunts her. I love how she’s efficient and responsible and wants to do the right thing for the people she loves. She’s determined to seize control of her life and make amends to start again.

Max is an alpha male all the way. He wants to protect those he loves—mostly from himself and his inheritance. He’s seen firsthand how the money and power associated with his family name can change people.

But these two friends and coworkers won’t be able to resist each other much longer, and it was fun to write that scenario.

And now it’s my turn to ask a question – what are your favorite traits in a hero and/or heroine? Comment for a chance to win your choice of a digital copy of one of my books.

Alexis: Hey everyone, check out this blurb of ACCEPTABLE RISK

Book five of The Mindhunters

To repay a debt, resourceful receptionist Catherine Montague has been living a lie, and her secret betrayal eats at her conscience. She knows what she has to do to reclaim her life, but revealing the truth could mean losing everything, including the agent she’s fallen in love with.

For sexy ex-SEAL Max Sawyer, hunting killers gives him a sense of fulfillment he never would have found if he’d followed the path that was his birthright. However, when his latest mission goes horribly wrong, releasing a hardened criminal in Max’s hometown of San Antonio, Texas, it’ll take all of his charm to convince the beautiful and resilient Catherine to serve as a buffer between him and the painful ties from his past.

Amid a manhunt, the re-emergence of a serial killer, and the activity of an organized crime ring known as the Circle, Max and Catherine may be the only ones who can set things right again. That is, if Max can forgive Catherine for her deception before a killer claims her. But is mercy a risk he’s willing to take?

Interview with A.S. Fenichel

Alexis: Today we have erotic paranormal, contemporary and historical romance author, A.S. Fenichel and she's here with a giveaway!  Don’t forget to leave a comment for a chance to win :-)

A.S. Fenichel: Thank you so much for inviting me here today, Alexis. I’m so happy to be able to chat with you and excited to give away a digital copy of my most recent book, Joshua’s Mistake.

Alexis: Let’s start at the beginning. When did you know you wanted to be a writer?

A.S.: I always told stories. I’m the kid who stared out the window because I was deep in a daydream. It never occurred to me that I could write the stories down until I was a freshman in college. I had a fiction assignment to turn a magazine photo into a short story. I never stopped writing. Joshua’s Mistake is my ninth book with Ellora’s Cave Publishing.

Alexis: I love the title of this latest book. What made you chose it?

A.S.: Joshua is the brother of Kane from Kane’s Bounty. Falling for Tessa, a government agent accused of treason, is the mistake that sends them on a wild ride. So, Joshua’s Mistake made sense.

Alexis: Absolutely. So what are you working on now?

A.S.: I’m just finishing up the edits on book three in the Psychic Mates series. The title is Training Rain. I love this book and can’t wait for readers to get a hold of it. We met Rain and Jess in Joshua’s Mistake and it turns out to be a dangerous and erotic process to train her as a psychic agent.

I have my first book with Lyrical Press/Kensington Books, Ascension, The Demon Hunters, releasing in October. I’m working on edits for that as well as book two of The Demon Hunter series. These books are Regency paranormal romance. They are fast-paced and I know everyone is going to love them.

Alexis: All of these sound fantastic! I can’t wait! In the meantime we can get Joshua’s Mistake. What are your favorite traits of Joshua and Tessa?

A.S.: Joshua is the most powerful psychic in the world. Even though he lives on the edge all the time, it has made for a very lonely life. He is both brutal and kind. Readers will adore him. In fact, it was readers who demanded I write a book for Joshua.

Tessa worked with a psychic Special Forces team. She is the lone survivor of an attack and has been accused of treason. She is bad ass with guns, knives, martial arts and is an amazing psychic in her own right. She can stop time for long enough to change the trajectory of a bullet. It’s very cool. She is fiercely loyal and fearless.

Alexis: Oh, I love a heroine who can stand on her own. It sounds like Joshua has his hands full, in more ways than one ;-)

I understand you write full time now. Does your pets help with your writing or distract?

A.S.: Ha! My cat is pretty chill. I write on a chaise lounge and she will sit between my feet while I write. We just adopted a dog. She’s old and was abandoned in our neighborhood. She’s pretty needy and often distracts me from my writing. She likes to stick her nose under my elbow and stare up at me with those big brown eyes. Who can resist that? Not me. :-)

Alexis: Aw, who could? Hope we weren’t too much of a distraction (batting eyes). Thank you so much for visiting us here on Happily Ever After Thoughts.

A.S.:What fun! Thanks again for having me and have a great day!

Joshua’s Mistake
A.S. Fenichel

Accused of treason and the murder of her Psychic Special Forces team, Tessa is in the custody of the FBI. She’s shocked and terrified when the most powerful Psi Agent in the world shows up to probe her mind and discover her guilt or innocence.

Joshua never expected to find a victim of one of his probes attractive, but he can’t seem to leave her behind when all hell breaks loose. Saving the stunning blonde means being drawn into a psychic war that will definitely end his career—and likely both of their lives.

The rhythm of their psychic auras hums to perfection and neither can fight the bond, but it’s all ripped away by a madman with a grudge. Tessa falls into a coma, and Joshua will have to risk his heart and soul to pull her back from the brink.

A Romantica® paranormal erotic romance from Ellora’s Cave

Here’s where you can find Joshua’s Mistake:

Alexis: Check out this excerpt from Joshua’s Mistake.

Joshua got up from the farm table. “I’ll be back in a little while. Peggy, can you show Tessa where she can rest?”

Peggy smiled warmly. “Of course. You’ll be wanting a shower too. If you give me those clothes, I’ll get them in the washing machine and have them clean when you wake up.”

“You’re very kind, Mrs. Flack.”

She waved a bony hand in dismissal. “You just call me Peggy. Everyone does.”

Tessa had said all the right things to Peggy. She had been polite and controlled her emotions. Inside, she was just short of full on panic. He was leaving her. Who could blame him? Tessa didn’t want to alarm the Flacks so she remained silent, yet practically screamed in her mind, “Where the hell are you going? Are you leaving me here?”

Part of her wanted him to hear and another part of her understood why he would want to get as far away from her as possible. Just because she could feel his emotions didn’t mean he would sense hers. He was undoubtedly very practiced at closing off his mind. If he was really a level ten psychic, he would have to just to stay sane.

He’d likely get killed if he stayed with her. At least he’d gotten her to a place where she could try to catch a few hours of sleep and then she’d be on the run. Probably for the rest of her life, however long that might be.

From the way his head spun around, she might as well have spoken out loud. His eyes widened and then he stalked toward her. He was visceral and terrifying. His body language said he wanted her and he might take her right there in the kitchen.

Tessa held her ground in the center of the old linoleum floor. She didn’t know if she wanted to move closer or run away. Everything about Joshua made her at once, curious, aroused and afraid.

Bill cleared his throat and walked out the door with his shotgun in his hand.

Peggy said, “Well, um…I’ll just wait for you in the next room, Tessa dear.”

Joshua didn’t stop until he was standing with only a sliver of light between them. She had to crane her neck to look up at him. His mouth came within a centimeter of hers, but he never touched her.

“I’m not leaving you.”

Her heart pounded in her chest and her stomach clenched painfully. “I can take care of myself.”

One side of his mouth lifted. His right hand came up and calloused fingers slid across her cheekbone. He was powerful. He could kill her. If his psi rating was true, he could likely kill her without touching her, but he could just as easily snap her neck. She could defend herself, but what would be the point. This was Joshua Lakeland. Eventually he would win.

Those same fingers continued until they were threaded through her hair and he forced her to look him in the eye. “I know you can, Tessa. I’m not leaving because I don’t want to leave you. I can’t explain why, but we’re in this together. You’re going to have to learn to trust me.”
She had to force air into her lungs. “I’ve already taken several leaps of faith. You just said you were leaving. If you want to go, then go.”

He shook his head, but didn’t release her. “I’m going to get rid of the car. I don’t want to get picked up by the local police because we made a rookie mistake and kept a stolen car too long.”

“Oh.” She could feel her cheeks flushing.

His left hand came up and cupped her other cheek. He ran a thumb along her bottom lip. She wanted to be impervious to his attention, but her body trembled at his touch.

His mouth drew closer. His breath mingled with hers as her lips separated partially in shock at what was about to happen and partially in need of his kiss. Those deep blue eyes locked with hers and she couldn’t blink or look away. He scanned her face to her lips, closed his eyes and stepped away.

Tessa’s instinct told her she should throw her arms around his neck and take the kiss he’d nearly given. Her cautious nature kept her feet planted in the spot on the linoleum.

Only the sound of heavy breathing filled the kitchen for several ticks of the clock.

“I’ll be back in a little while. You’d better get some rest.” Joshua walked out the kitchen door into the yard.
