Recipe for a Homecoming

Sabrina York

5 Stars

★★★★★

“It was a beautiful thing surrendering to love…there was such peace in it.”

After surviving an abusive marriage, Veronica James is returning to her hometown to help care for her grandmother.  The comfort she finds in the familiarity of her grams bookshop as well as catching up with childhood friends is exactly what she’s needed.  So, when she bumps into her first love, Mark Stirling, she begins to wonder if she could possibly find love again…and what harm could possibly come from agreeing to test the waters by being “friends with benefits”?  But when Mark starts to want more and Roni’s past comes looking for her, these friends to lovers are going to have to decide if they are ready to put all their cards on the table and take a leap of faith or fold and walk away…

Dear Reader, Sabrina York’s romances are so heartfelt, and I’m so in love with this series!  This installment to her Stirling Ranch series shows no matter how broken one may feel, there is healing strength in being accepted unconditionally.  “Anything is possible if you just don’t give up...”

Loved and highly recommend!

Sharing what I love,

READ AN EXCERPT

He broke the silence with four sharp words. “Why are you here?”

“Why don’t you sit down?” She did so herself, sliding into the banquette of his booth—her knees were about to give in, anyway.

He ignored her request. “Why are you here?”

“Danny, this is hard enough, and you’re not making it any easier for me—”

“Oh, I’m not making it easier for you? You’re the one who left me. No warning. Nothing. Just…gone. Poof.”

Irritation bubbled, and though she’d told herself she wouldn’t allow her anger to surface, she couldn’t help snapping, “There was plenty of warning. You weren’t paying attention.”

“Really? I was sure paying attention during our last fight. I remember that pretty clearly.”

“Do you? Do you remember what we fought about?”

His face went blank and he dropped into his seat, where he could face her, but not come too close. As though he were protecting himself from her.

What a laugh. She was the one who needed protecting. He was far too addictive for her own good.

“Why don’t you tell me what you remember?” he suggested.

She sighed. “We’d been talking about the future.”

“Ah, yes.” He settled back into his seat, his expression still mutinous.

“And you freaked out.”

He frowned. “I did not freak out.”

“You made it pretty clear we had no future together.”

“I didn’t say that. I just said I didn’t want marriage.”

“Or kids.”

“And can you blame me? With parents like mine? What kind of father would I be?”

That comment hit her like a blow. Stole her breath. Made her question her own sanity for coming here.

Nothing had changed. Nothing had changed at all.

“And my mother?” he continued harshly. “Did Darla tell you what my mother has done now?”

“She said she skipped bail.”

He barked a bitter laugh. “Skipped bail, then skipped town. But before she disappeared, she cleaned out my bank accounts, and my apartment. She hocked everything I own. Everything I’ve worked for.”

Anger raged in Lizzie’s heart. The woman truly had no moral compass.

“You’re not like your mother.” She’d told him that a thousand times, but too many years raised by that horrible woman had clouded his self-image.

“And then, there’s the father. The man who wanted nothing to do with me. The man who wouldn’t even acknowledge my existence. He certainly didn’t support us.”

“You’re not like him, either.” She hoped…

He shook his head and scrubbed his face with his palms. “It doesn’t matter. None of that matters. Not anymore.” She hated his expression, the resignation and the pain. “So, why are you here?” The question again, this time, whispered.

She might as well just dive in. “I…need your help.”

He frowned again. “What do you want?”

Her heart stuttered. Oh, Lord. Now that the time was here, she didn’t know what to say. Or how to say it. Or anything.

Danny waited, silently, watching her. Then his lips tweaked into a hint of a sad smile. “You’re procrastinating, Lizzie. You never procrastinate unless it’s something bad.”

Her expression must have given something away because he paled.

“Are you okay? Are you sick?”

She shook her head. “I’m fine. And no. It’s not bad. Not bad at all. Well, not all bad. There is some bad, I suppose. But it’s…” She trailed off. She was babbling—she knew she was. It was yet another way she avoided unpleasant topics.

Danny pinned her with a sharp look. “What is it you want to tell me?”

She wrinkled her nose. “About that last fight had—””

“What about it?” His tone was tight, as though the words were bitter on his tongue.

Right. “The one where you told me you didn’t want marriage or children.” She tried not to sound bitter as well, but failed.

“For good reason,” he snapped.

“Right,” she snapped right back. Then she met his gaze as bravely as she could. “Well, I was pregnant.”

SAY YES TO THE SCOT! by Lecia Cornwall, Anna Harrington, May McGoldrick, and Sabrina York with aTiara Giveaway!

Say YES to the Scot! by Lecia Cornwall, Anna Harrington, May McGoldrick, and Sabrina York

You are formally invited to the Highland wedding event of the year. These four lasses are about to meet their matches in an original digital anthology featuring stories from New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Sabrina York, Lecia Cornwall, Anna Harrington, and May McGoldrick.
HOW A LASS WED A HIGHLANDER by Lecia Cornwall
In this retelling of The Princess and The Pea, Laird Alex Munro of Culmore has just five weeks to find a bride and marry her...or else the clan will be cursed with ill luck. Cait MacLeod finds herself caught in a clan feud, and when she tries to stop a deadly raid, she ends up as Alex Munro’s prisoner. With timing running out, is this couple meant to be?
A MATCH MADE IN HEATHER by Anna Harrington
She was the laird's daughter. He was nothing more than a penniless, nameless Scot with nothing to offer but his heart. Fate tore them apart, but now he's back in her life with status, money and a title. Can they let go of past hurts and find love?
A MIDSUMMER WEDDING by May McGoldrick
Their marriage was two decades in the making. The young, educated woman and her highland, pirate husband, betrothed when they were still children. But on the day of their wedding, Elizabeth Hay and Alexander Macpherson are in for a surprise.
THE SCOT SAYS I DO by Sabrina York
Catherine Ross's world is turned upside down when her brother gambles away every penny they own. But to make matters worse? He’s lost everything to none other than Duncan Mackay, the rugged Scot who Catherine loved for years—but he never noticed her, and now she positively loathes him. But her brother’s in danger of going to Newgate, and the despicable Duncan has a plan– she can claim back the money and save her brother. If she marries him…

Duncan glanced at Peter who had dropped back down on the divan and covered his face with one arm. He was no use to either of them at this point. Besides, this business was between himself…and Catherine. He gently pressed her into the king’s chair, took one next to hers and scooted it around until he faced her. “You and Peter have no home now.”
“Not even the Wilds?”
“Not even the stables.” He tried to be as sympathetic as he could. This was difficult for her. Shattering. And it would only get worse. “For you, things are not so bad. You’re a lovely girl. You can marry well.” He ignored her snort. “But for Peter…” He let it hang there like a razor sharp icicle clinging to a roofline as a melt approached.
“But Peter?”
“He has other debts.”
“Oh no.”
“Small ones, but substantial enough for his creditors to ask for retribution.”
They both knew what that meant. Debtors’ prison. A truly nasty end for a feckless lad. But Duncan had the inclination to allow Peter to languish there—at least for a while—to teach the boy a lesson.
“Newgate would kill him,” Catherine whispered.
“It’s not all that bad.”
Her gaze snapped to him. “And how do you know?”
He lifted a brow. He had no intention of telling her that he’d visited and reprieved more than one foolish friend.
“Poor Peter.”
“He did bring this on himself. He gambles like a fiend.” A fiend who thinks he can never lose.
“Can’t you help him?”
Duncan swallowed an outraged laugh. “I believe I already have.”
“I mean, help him more?”
“Buy out all his debts? Return his wealth and property to him? Pat him on his head and charge him to go forth and risk it all again? What kind of fool do you think I am?”
“A heartless one.” She stood and whirled away, which gave him cause to follow.
But honestly, he was not the heartless one here.
When she spun back, he was right behind her and they were far too close. The tips of her breasts brushed against his chest and he nearly swallowed his tongue. She flinched as well, as though the touch had been like a bolt of lightning. She gazed up into his eyes, hers wide and damp. Her lips parted and her pink tongue dabbed out to wet them and his knees nearly failed him.
Damn she was so beautiful. So glorious. He wanted to kiss her now, ravish her. Claim her. He wanted—
“I cannot bear the thought of marrying one of my suitors,” she said, and he was brought back to the moment, his intent, with a powerful lurch.
“There may be a solution.”
She tipped up her delicate chin bravely. “And what might that be?”
So simple. So perfect.
“Marry me.”
Her jaw dropped and he fixated on the sight of her open mouth. If that was not a demand for a kiss, he did not know what was.
He pulled her into his arms, reveling in the warmth, the curves of her slight form, and lowered his head.
She tasted like heaven. Sweet bliss. Just like he remembered from that day when he’d pulled her from the loch and forced her to breathe again. Her scent infused him, enamored him, enraged a long-banked fire within him.
She would be his.
He would have her.
Finally.
Catherine Ross would be his bride, just as he’d dreamed of for so many years. Just as he’d fought and scrabbled and worked for. His life ambition had come to him and the moment was so sublime…
Until she pulled away and stared at him with an odd mixture of shock and fear limning her eyes.
And she hauled back her delicate fist.
And punched him in the jaw.
By the time he’d recovered from the shock of what he could only interpret as her refusal of his suit, she’d whirled away and flounced off to her chambers—God only knew where—in the bowels of the enormous mansion.
But this was only the first salvo in his campaign to win hr.
And win her, he would.

Cowboys Never Fold by Lexi Post

Former professional poker player, Kendra “Night Owl” Lowe, is determined to make her new Poker Flat Nudist Resort successful, even if it means relying on her own two hands and a few misfit employees. All bets are off, however, when Wade Johnson arrives, her fourth stable manager in less than four months, and her attention wanders to his broad shoulders, six-pack abs, and polite ways. But she’s his boss and giving in to temptation could mean jeopardizing her operation. Something she refuses to do.

Wade Johnson only agreed to work at Poker Flat because he owed his best friend a favor. Now he has to discover why the last three stable mangers quit and fulfill the requirements of his position, while trying to keep his hands off the smart, sexy, unreadable owner. But even as his body and heart become more involved, new “unfortunate events” occur to threaten the resort.

As Wade draws closer to learning the truth, his own truth is revealed. Kendra will do everything she can to make her resort a success, which could include letting him go. To win her heart and save her dream, he will have to go all-in and that could mean baring more than his soul.

Excerpt from Cowboys Never Fold

Wade took the plate from her and brought it to the sink. “I’ll just wash these up for Selma and head to bed.”
She was off the stool and grabbing the sprayer before he could reach it. “No. You made the meal for me. I can clean up. You’ve probably had a long day. When did you get up?”
He shrugged. “Probably around five. I didn’t really pay attention.”
“Exactly. I’ll stay and clean up. Go get a good night’s sleep. You have a lot of ordering to do tomorrow based on your lists.”
His eyes widened. “You really approve of everything?”
Kendra put her other hand on her hip. “Listen. I don’t know anything about horses. All I know is what nudists like based on research. I’ll come up with something for the nude riding, but I need an expert to set up my stables and trails. You’re that expert. I’m not going to get in the way of that.”
He smiled, his eyes almost twinkling in his excitement. “Well then, boss. I definitely need to be doing the dishes for you.”
He reached for the sprayer and without thinking, she pulled it out and sprayed him.
“Oh my God, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to.” She stared as the shirt conformed to Wade’s body, the contours of his chest coming out in full relief. Turning away from the titillating sight, she grabbed a couple hand towels hanging next to the sink. She just didn’t want him to do the dishes. Now he would think she was the worst boss in the state.
Turning back to help him dry off, she froze. Wade had taken off his shirt, revealing his moist chest and arms. The man’s pectorals were what she called mountain muscles and the wet hair that formed a line straight down the middle of his rippled abdominals disappeared beneath blue jeans being held up by a big-buckled belt. She tried to look at his face but was drawn to his large biceps, which had been hidden by the shirt. She followed those to his shoulders where more muscle explained why he appeared so broad. He was. The man was walking muscle.
   “Are those for me?”
His voice snapped her out of her drool-like state, and she looked him in the eye. The man’s lips formed a slow smirk.
“Yes. Here.” She gave him the towels and he pushed one back at her.
“Can you dry my back? That water sprayer is strong.”
“Right, of course.” She was bumbling like an idiot, but what woman wouldn’t be. Damn, the man was built. He made her feel petite despite being taller than average. He had to be well over six feet. Stepping behind him, she was treated to another tantalizing view. As he wiped at his chest and arms, the muscles in his back danced, showing the many layers he had. She hesitated to touch him. He would be warm and so male.
“Isn’t it wet?” He rolled his shoulders. “It feels like it.”
“Yes. Yes, it is.” She forced herself to use the towel against his skin, careful not to let her hand touch him. If it did, she wouldn’t be able to stop. She wiped at the moisture until he was dry, then took a deep breath and stepped around him, tossing the towel on the sink. “I’m sorry. I was just trying to keep you from washing the dishes.”
“No harm. I’ve been wet before.” His smile appeared again, and she had the strongest urge to kiss it.
Switching her weight to her right hip, she crossed her arms. “Well, I guess now you have to let me do the dishes.” She meant to sound flippant, but didn’t carry it off well.
He held out his towel. “Yup. Definitely got your way…this time.”
She uncrossed her arms to take the towel and crushed it against her chest. “Have a good night.”
He shrugged his large shoulders, causing her insides to tighten. Why did she have to be so susceptible to broad shoulders, and why did he have to have the most muscular ones she’d ever seen?
“It all depends on the bed.” He winked and brushed past her. Their arms touched for a second, his clean male scent, which was stronger now without his shirt, washed over her and almost buckled her knees.
She couldn’t resist and turned to watch him walk away, his back teasing her with its muscle play until the batwing doors swung closed behind him.
She pulled the damp towel up to her face and inhaled. God, the man smelled good. Damn. Built, well mannered, organized, knowledgeable and with a dark tan above his waist that made her want to crawl down his pants to see how far it went.
She groaned. Tan to the waist meant he was outside without a shirt more often than not. “Hell.” She was definitely screwed…or rather wanted to be. Could she ask Dale for another replacement stable manager?
