READ AN EXCERPT

He broke the silence with four sharp words. “Why are you here?”

“Why don’t you sit down?” She did so herself, sliding into the banquette of his booth—her knees were about to give in, anyway.

He ignored her request. “Why are you here?”

“Danny, this is hard enough, and you’re not making it any easier for me—”

“Oh, I’m not making it easier for you? You’re the one who left me. No warning. Nothing. Just…gone. Poof.”

Irritation bubbled, and though she’d told herself she wouldn’t allow her anger to surface, she couldn’t help snapping, “There was plenty of warning. You weren’t paying attention.”

“Really? I was sure paying attention during our last fight. I remember that pretty clearly.”

“Do you? Do you remember what we fought about?”

His face went blank and he dropped into his seat, where he could face her, but not come too close. As though he were protecting himself from her.

What a laugh. She was the one who needed protecting. He was far too addictive for her own good.

“Why don’t you tell me what you remember?” he suggested.

She sighed. “We’d been talking about the future.”

“Ah, yes.” He settled back into his seat, his expression still mutinous.

“And you freaked out.”

He frowned. “I did not freak out.”

“You made it pretty clear we had no future together.”

“I didn’t say that. I just said I didn’t want marriage.”

“Or kids.”

“And can you blame me? With parents like mine? What kind of father would I be?”

That comment hit her like a blow. Stole her breath. Made her question her own sanity for coming here.

Nothing had changed. Nothing had changed at all.

“And my mother?” he continued harshly. “Did Darla tell you what my mother has done now?”

“She said she skipped bail.”

He barked a bitter laugh. “Skipped bail, then skipped town. But before she disappeared, she cleaned out my bank accounts, and my apartment. She hocked everything I own. Everything I’ve worked for.”

Anger raged in Lizzie’s heart. The woman truly had no moral compass.

“You’re not like your mother.” She’d told him that a thousand times, but too many years raised by that horrible woman had clouded his self-image.

“And then, there’s the father. The man who wanted nothing to do with me. The man who wouldn’t even acknowledge my existence. He certainly didn’t support us.”

“You’re not like him, either.” She hoped…

He shook his head and scrubbed his face with his palms. “It doesn’t matter. None of that matters. Not anymore.” She hated his expression, the resignation and the pain. “So, why are you here?” The question again, this time, whispered.

She might as well just dive in. “I…need your help.”

He frowned again. “What do you want?”

Her heart stuttered. Oh, Lord. Now that the time was here, she didn’t know what to say. Or how to say it. Or anything.

Danny waited, silently, watching her. Then his lips tweaked into a hint of a sad smile. “You’re procrastinating, Lizzie. You never procrastinate unless it’s something bad.”

Her expression must have given something away because he paled.

“Are you okay? Are you sick?”

She shook her head. “I’m fine. And no. It’s not bad. Not bad at all. Well, not all bad. There is some bad, I suppose. But it’s…” She trailed off. She was babbling—she knew she was. It was yet another way she avoided unpleasant topics.

Danny pinned her with a sharp look. “What is it you want to tell me?”

She wrinkled her nose. “About that last fight had—””

“What about it?” His tone was tight, as though the words were bitter on his tongue.

Right. “The one where you told me you didn’t want marriage or children.” She tried not to sound bitter as well, but failed.

“For good reason,” he snapped.

“Right,” she snapped right back. Then she met his gaze as bravely as she could. “Well, I was pregnant.”

Girls' Weekend Away Series by Shana Gray and a Contest!

Hello readers!

I’m so happy to be visiting Lexi‘s blog again!  And this time we’re going to San Francisco. Have you ever been? I think it’s a beautiful city and would love to go back. I’ve been twice and one time when I was there, with my mom back in 1998, we had an earthquake. It was pretty intense, because I had been fearing having one months leading up to our trip. I studied geology in college, so I understand all the forces of the earth that happen below our feet.

For me it was a business trip, but for her she was a tagalong and got to do a whole lot of exploring while I was busy at the conference. I never knew what she was getting up to. She wasn’t afraid, and for a fiery 5’3” English lady, nothing stood in her way. She was 68 when we went. She’d go out and meet new people – perhaps that’s where that’s where I get it from :-) I remember her telling me she almost had a whole organic apple orchard lined up as a business for us. Sometimes she went a little bit overboard….like me LOL

The next time I went was for a writing conference and there were no earthquakes thank goodness.

Experiences from both of those trips are sprinkled into my newest release MEET ME IN SAN FRANCISCO. The second book in my Girls Weekend Away series which was released on September 25. I’m absolutely thrilled that the readers are loving it so far. It’s garnering many five star reviews and positive comments. The first book WHAT HAPPENS IN VEGAS was released July 24. And yes, Vegas is another place I have been to a few times.

The third book is coming out in December. And it is called THE NASHVILLE BET. A story about a country music singer and a big city girl. Maybe when you’re reading the previous two books you’ll be able to figure out which one of the best friends will be our heroine in the Nashville story. The fourth book, which will wrap up the series is titled A MATCH MADE IN MONACO. That’s where we head to a wonderfully exotic location for some nuptials, of course, I’m not going to tell you who’s getting married!

But one thing I will say is I am planning on having a series contest. The contest will close after the fourth book. All contest information will be in my newsletter, so if you haven’t signed up for it yet, I hope you do. You’ll also get a free download of my sexy book Hot Fusion. If you’d like to sign up, click HERE.

Here is a peek of all the covers from my UK publisher!
Don’t you just love them? I get asked why I have two covers for each book, well, it’s because the world rights (except NA) are with my UK publisher Headline Eternal Romance and my North American publisher, Entangled Publishing creates covers for NA. It’s the best of both worlds!

Speaking of travel, it’s something that I love to do. There’s a big wide world out there and staying in one place without trying to see as much as possible seems such a shame to me. It’s taking me a while to be able to travel as much as I do and next month I’m heading off to Hong Kong and Bali.

I hope you follow my travel on my social media pages. Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Bookbub, Goodreads I’ll be posting a whole lotta pictures to share with everybody. I’m traveling with a friend of mine. She used to work with me and was a police sergeant. She left a while ago to become an Ontario fire marshal. She’s one of three women fire marshals in Ontario and I think there’s an exciting story in there. So I’ll be picking her brain on our trip for a future book. The only thing that has me a little nervous is the recent earthquakes and tsunamis on the islands around Bali, and yes, there is a cranky volcano on Bali - Mount Agung - and she’s been smoking for the last little while. Fingers crossed Mother Nature decides to be kind to us when we’re there and not act up.

In the meantime, for all you pumpkin spice lovers, I hope you have a wonderful fall and enjoy the seasons as a shift from sultry summer too colourful fall. I’ll be back again in December and I look forward to speaking with you all then!

CONTESTS, CRAZY WOMEN, and FREE STUFF!

Hey, ya’all, how is everyone doing?  Excellent, I hope!  I’m doing great, but I’m still recovering a bit from being a nervous wreck.  I entered my newest cover in a cover contest and it’s been a rough ride over here watching the votes.  LOL

It all started when Emmy Ellis created a stunning cover for my new release, Murder by Dummies.  Gorgeous, isn't it?  I was so proud of it that when I received an email flyer about the cover contest, I thought, “Why the hell not?!”

So, I sent in my $10 entry fee, submitted my cover, and was soooo proud when it showed up on the contest website.  Cool!  Gorgeous cover, and it’s all mine.  I’m a very proud momma.  Then the contest opens, I send out my plea for votes and holy cow, do my readers/friends/family and their readers/friends/families respond in spades!!!  The votes poured in and I surged to first place.

Way cool!

Now I start watching the votes and I’m climbing, leaving the pack behind. I’m excited.  I might actually be a contender!!!  I’m not used to hitting first place because I tend to prefer to compete against myself, so it was way exciting for me and within 24 hours, I was hooked and determined to win.  But then another contestant began the chase.  In one day, she racked up like 150 points or something ridiculous like that, and knocked me out of first.

What?  How dare she?!

Now I’m invested.  I start watching the votes tick up…I get one, seconds later she gets one, I get one, she gets one…it goes that way for 2 whole days.  I start to see conspiracy theories everywhere I turn.  Maybe aliens are picking up my brainwaves and transmitting my secrets to her.

I need a tin foil hat!!!

I’m in first…she’s in first…I’m in first…she’s in first.  I’m starting to get emails and texts from people upset that I’d been ousted.  Hell, I was upset now.  What started as a lark was now an all-out war!

So, I decide to put out a huge call for votes and I get a TON of them.  I surge from about 30 votes behind to about 30 votes ahead.  Unfortunately, that only seemed to piss her off, because she kicked into high gear and blew by me to the tune of almost 100 points!!!

A little over-kill, I’m thinking.  J  I should have made that tin foil hat!

So now I’m a crazed woman on a mission.  I’m emailing everyone I know.  I’m texting people I haven’t talked to in 2 years, I’m checking the counts every 2 minutes, I’m staying in my pajamas, not bathing, not brushing my teeth, not eating…  Alright, it wasn’t quite that bad.  But I was checking the counts 100 times a day, staying up late worrying about how to get more votes.  It had turned me into a CRAZY WOMAN!  I’d wake up in the middle of the night and check the counts.

She never sleeps!

But Thank God, I have my Butterscotch Martini Girls and alcohol.  The BMG’s peeled me off the ceiling and reminded me that the prize I was going after in that contest was available to the top 3 placings, and that my cover was doing one hell of a good job.  They reminded me that it was a kick-ass book with a kick-ass cover, and no one could take that away from me.  They reminded me that this was a friendly competition, and not the end of the world…this was not Coke trying to outsell Pepsi.  In fact, this wasn’t about sales at all.

DUH!

Then I took their advice and poured myself a drink, and the alcohol put me in that place where life was good again.  J  Okay, so now I’m breathing normally again, I’m dressing and eating again, and I had to ask the big question.

What happened to make me go all Lizzie Borden?

I’m not normally an extremely competitive woman, so why did competitiveness kick in like gas hosed on a bonfire?  I think I have the answer…I was so close.  I had taken first place and could almost taste victory.  I had the brass ring almost in hand.  So, when it looked like someone might steal the prize from me, all of a sudden that prize that was available to the top 3 placings seemed to be slipping from my grasp.  I lost perspective.

Has that ever happened to you?  Ever got so close that reason sprouted wings and flew the coop?  That you found yourself obsessing over something that didn’t have nearly the value you had assigned to it?  Yeah, I thought so.  I suspect we’ve all pretty much done that at one time or another.  So, leave me a comment and tell me what situation pushed you beyond the boundaries of normal.  I’d love to hear it.  LOL

Now that I’m back to normal and have my obsession in hand, I’m excited about the contest.  J  I’m not going to stalk my competition, plant internet explosives, or start knocking on strange doors asking to use their internet devices so I can vote.  J  Life is good.  I’m kicking ass in 2nd place, and I have the satisfaction of knowing that I made my competition earn that bid for the top spot.

Could I still win?  Absolutely!  There are 2 more voting days left, and I have come to realize this week that my readers/friends/family are freaking LOYAL and freaking AWESOME!!!!!  Some of them have taken this contest almost as seriously as I have…although I doubt they were checking vote counts on their 3am trip to the bathroom.  LOL  But we’ve all seen first-hand this week how quickly the vote can turn.  So it’s not over until the fat lady sings!

That said, if you’ve got internet devices laying around, pick ‘em up and send me some love by voting for Murder by Dummies. You can vote once a day on each device you have…phones, laptops, desktops, Amazon fire sticks, tablets, smart TVs…anything that gets to the internet!  And if you have more than one browser, you can multiply your votes by voting on each device, on each browser.  Just sayin...  LOL  For each vote you cast AND comment on, you will get an equal number of entries into a drawing for one of three $10 Amazon Gift Cards and 7 ecopies of my Dallas Fire & Rescue Kindle Worlds story, Barn Burner.  But to get your entries, you MUST post a comment at the BMG Comment Link below, telling me how many votes you cast and what kinds of devices you voted on that day.

Voting and posting closes at midnight tomorrow (Saturday the 15th), so you still have time to earn those entries into my drawing.  Winners will be posted by 2pm on Sunday the 16th.  So if you have been voting, THANK YOU!!!  And if you’re new to this contest, go earn some entries.  Hope you win!
