Torr appeared to grow larger before her eyes. He straightened to his full height and looked down at her, his eyes hard. “I was protecting my king and what is mine.”
She swallowed, his stare clearly indicating he considered her his. She broke eye contact and looked past him to find the two men, Beth, Braigh, and Mairi watching them. Once again, she was the center of attention. Not the right place for a TWI agent.
Medieval. She needed to think like a medieval woman. What would Mairi do in this case? Actually, the poor woman might very well faint.
Though it rubbed her all ways but the right way, she kept her gaze lowered. “I’m sorry that helping Ian angered you. I will refrain from doing so again.”
She heard Torr sigh. “That is not what upset me.”
Daring to look at him, she hoped her gaze wasn’t too direct. “Then why were you angry?”
He folded his arms across his chest, usually a common defensive gesture, but one she had begun to believe was his thinking stance. “I did not like seeing ye in the arms of another.”
That was blunt and to the point. “But aren’t you in the arms of another woman every few nights?”
He looked away and dropped his arms before quickly changing the subject. “I believe food awaits us.”
“So it does.” She let her irritation spill into her tone of voice. His double standard grated on her nerves, but that was according to her own time. She had to stop letting him get to her. Crouching down, she picked up her shoes and walked barefoot to the blanket, completely ignoring the hulk strolling beside her.
When she sat on the blanket, Douglas caught her eye and shook his head.
Oh, go have dinner with Medusa! She took a deep breath to regain some balance.
Torr lowered his large body next to her. Holding out his hand, he offered her a chunk of bread and a square of cheese. Reluctantly, she accepted it. Crossing her legs beneath her, she took a bite. The sharp cheese woke her taste buds and refocused her thoughts.
He didn’t say a word as he ate his mutton and bread.
She appreciated the silence and the food, casting furtive glances at him. The man would definitely be considered “eye candy” in her age. Broad shoulders with large muscles in his arms, developed pectorals, and abs women sighed over. While she had only seen a glimpse of his thighs, she could tell by the bulge of his calves that they, too, would be solid strength. He was no cover model with his crooked nose, red-tinged hair, and pure maleness, but he was striking in his own way. Even more than his giant build, there was a purpose to him that forewarned he was a force to be reckoned with. She just couldn’t see him dying in battle.
“Here.” Torr held out a wooden cup.
She tentatively took a sip to find it was water. It enhanced the aftertaste of the cheese, one of the few food items she found palatable. She handed the cup back. “Thank you.”
His large hand covered hers but didn’t let go. She looked up at him. His deep blue eyes crinkled at the corners. “Ye have no need to fear me, lass.”
Maybe not physically, but definitely emotionally. She liked this big, kind-hearted man, far too much. His feelings for her, though only interest and lust, were not good. Better to keep him at arm’s length. She grinned. “I know.”
His brow rose and arrogance revealed itself once again. “Ye do? Well then, ye also know my bed is waiting for you.”
She swallowed the thrill of excitement that ran through her chest and instead focused on her modern irritation over his lifestyle. Though she tempered it, she wasn’t above a little sarcasm. “Which night?”
He scowled, his face taking on harsh lines.
Holy Hamlet, he looked mean when he did that.
“Lass, you test my patience.”
“Laird, you test mine.” She raised her chin just a fraction.
He scowled harder. Then his face relaxed, and he chuckled. “I think ye will fit into this clan very well.”
The idea of being a welcome part of the clan scared the hell out of her. Since her parents’ death, she’d created her own clan, so to speak. She couldn’t become attached to another, especially not in 1306. She needed to put distance between herself and this laird.

“Which one is your car?” She glanced around the crowded parking lot. A few streetlights pushed back the darkness and shadows. The restaurant served customers until midnight on the weekends, but no one loitered in the lot, at least from what Mia could see.
“Don’t have one at the moment.” Mason hooked his thumbs in the belt loops of his jeans. “I took the bus. It stopped a few blocks from here.”
“Would you like a ride?” She pulled the car keys from her purse. “I feel a little ridiculous we met here tonight. I just wasn’t sure if you were some kind of freak.”
His eyebrow lifted, and he closed the distance between them as a tiger would zero in on its mate. A sexy, masculine smile curled his lips. “Have you made up your mind yet?”
“I’ll let you know in the morning.” Desire trickled down her spine. Mia nodded toward the passenger side of the car for him to hop in.
He confiscated her keys instead to unlock and open the driver’s side door for her like a gentleman. Then he leaned closer and nuzzled her temple with his nose.
Not sure if he planned to seduce her in the parking lot or if he merely wanted to tease her, Mia pressed her hand to his chest and tried to think straight. “You’re the first guy I’ve gone on a date with since my divorce. I haven’t slept with anyone since Evan.”
He tunneled his fingers through her wavy, chestnut-brown hair. “I haven’t dated anyone in a long time either. We’ll take it slow or fast, whatever you want, but I promise you one thing. After I’m done with you, you won’t even remember that bastard’s name.”
Oh, God. She almost melted right then and there. “Fast. I want you, Mason.”
“Take me to your place and you can have me.”

About the Author:
Writing is the fruit of happiness.
Amber Daulton lives her life by that one belief even though she normally isn’t so Zen.
As a fan of contemporary, paranormal, and historical romance novels alike, she can’t get enough of feisty heroines and alpha heroes. Her mind is a wonderland of adventure, laughter, and awesome ways of kicking a guy when he’s down. She probably wouldn’t be too sane without her computer and notebooks. After all, what’s a girl to do when people are jabbering away in her head and it’s hard to shut them up? Write! Nothing else works.

Interview with Rachel Leigh Smith and a Giveaway!

Alexis: Today we have Sci-Fi Romance author Rachel Leigh Smith who is giving away a copy of her book and a beautiful necklace! Be sure to enter the Rafflecopter at the end for your chance to win!
So Rachel, what made you choose your title?

Rachel:  The book titled itself, to be honest. I know that sounds weird. I dreamed A’yen one night, and I decided that to tell his story properly, I had to write it for me, which means it’s all about the hero. I wrote it with no concern at all for trying to market it or interest a specific agent or editor.

“My name is A’yen” is something A’yen says multiple times throughout the story. He has this thing about being called by his name. Most Loks Mé never correct a human when their name isn’t used, or is pronounced wrong. But not A’yen.

I never even thought about trying to change the title. When I was submitting it to various small presses I knew the title was a hill I was prepared to die on.

Alexis: I understand. Sometimes you just know that is the right title for the book. Why did you choose this sub-genre of romance?

Rachel:  It chose me. Everything I’d written prior to this was historical romance. I had no idea science fiction romance was an actual genre. Once I finished the first draft of the book I started doing market research, thinking I was completely alone. Lo and behold I wasn’t! I’m having so much fun exploring the genre and finding new authors to love.

Alexis: What has been the best piece of advice you ever received for your writing career?

Rachel:  Finish the first draft! You will learn more about your process, your strengths and weaknesses, and your pet phrases, than by any other method. You can go to conferences and workshops and classes until you have one foot in the grave, but if you never finish your very first first draft all you’re doing is wasting your money and time.

Alexis: Great advice! Speaking of conferences, what was your first writer’s conference?

Rachel:  The 2007 ACFW conference in Dallas. I’ll never forget it. I was nervous about going, but ended up having so much fun I’ve now been to seven ACFW conferences. I’m no longer a member there and couldn’t make RWA National this year, so it’s a little weird not attending a conference. Planning to go RWA in Manhattan next year and looking forward to it.

Alexis: RWA on NYC is amazing. You will have a great time with so many other writers there. Though it seems like writers go it alone, we all have support from others. What do you think everyone should know about your critique partner?

Rachel:  She’s the other half of my brain. Seriously. We think the same, we plot the same, we develop characters the same. It’s unreal how perfectly matched we are. Without her pushing me to send A’yen into the world he’d probably still be sitting on my hard drive.

Alexis: Check out the blurb and excerpt from this book and don’t forget to enter the Rafflecopter for a chance to win this book and this beautiful necklace! Rachel even left a special question :-)

Blurb: My Name is A’Yen

They've taken everything from him. Except his name.

The Loks Mé have been slaves for so long, freedom is a distant myth A'yen Mesu no longer believes. A year in holding, because of his master's murder, has sucked the life from him. Archaeologist Farran Hart buys him to protect her on an expedition to the Rim, the last unexplored quadrant.

Farran believes the Loks Mé once lived on the Rim and is determined to prove it. And win A'yen's trust. But she's a breeder's daughter and can't be trusted.

Hidden rooms, information caches and messages from a long-dead king change A'yen's mind about her importance. When she's threatened he offers himself in exchange, and lands on the Breeder's Association's radar. The truth must be told. Even if it costs him his heart.

Excerpt from My Name is A’yen

Expedition: Day One
When the transport shuttle broke through the atmosphere and space stretched before him in all its infinite glory, the chains of his grief tightened. Enforcers and keepers couldn’t dictate his every move in space, and definitely wouldn’t follow him all the way to the Rim. So why did he want to curl up in a corner and cry his eyes out?
Maybe because, up here, he’d tasted freedom. Knew the wonders waiting to be discovered. Knew without a doubt no one saw him as disposable, because the only people he’d interacted with were ones who loved him. He didn’t have any of that this time.
Dr. Hart’s reflection smiled at him. “Are you okay?”
“I’m fine.”
Her hand touched his shoulder for two seconds. “Your face says otherwise.”
He shrugged away from her touch, turning to face her. Something about her, the way she studied him maybe, encouraged him to be honest. This time he listened. “I’ve lost my whole life. Being up here again makes it real.”
Her left hand dove into her pocket. “I want you to have these. I know there are things stored in them.”
In her open palm lay Master’s coding chips. She had no idea the treasures cradled in her hand. His maps, video letters from Mother, a recording of Yanna’s first birthday celebration. Which he’d missed by three days. Maybe he could spend her next one with her. Turning seven was important too. He held his hand out and she dropped them into his palm. “Thank you.”
