Mary Behre Interview and Giveaway

Alexis: Today we have Paranormal Romance author, Mary Behre who is giving away a signed copy of SPIRITED and some cool swag  to one lucky commenter.

So Mary, What are you working on now?

Mary: A lot. I’m celebrating the release of SPIRITED. That means lots of promotion and blog tours on fabulous blogs like HAPPILY EVER AFTER THOUGHTS! In January, I turned in book two, GUARDED, which is due out August 5, 2014. So I’m also in the middle of copy edits for that book. And, I’m writing book three, ENERGIZED (working title) :-)

Alexis: Why did you choose this genre to write in?

Mary: Probably the same reason most romance readers do, I like happy endings. Life, while usually wonderful, doesn’t promise a happy ending for everyone, romance novels do.

Alexis: Yup, that’s why read it :-) What are your favorite traits of the two main characters?

Mary: Jules has the worst sense of direction. It’s a trait that gets her into trouble and introduces her to people she might never have met otherwise.

Seth is dedicated. As a teen father, he was dedicated to his daughter and her mother (his first wife). As a cop in Tidewater, he’s dedicated to protecting his city. For all his dedication, he’s not perfect. And it’s his imperfection that makes this big, sexy hero so loveable.

Alexis: What has been the best piece of advice you ever received for your writing career?

Mary: The best piece of advice I received came from my fabulous critique partner, Valerie Bowman. When we met, neither of us were published and we discussed time and again what we wanted from our writing careers. At times, I wanted to give up but she never let me. Her advice never waivered, “You’re good. Go big or go home!”

Alexis: I like the way she thinks! I imagine you learned a lot along the way. What was the first writer’s conference you attended?

Mary: My first writer’s conference was a small chapter conference at First Coast Romance Writers in Florida. I went down because the guest speaker was Suzanne Brockmann. One visit at this amazing chapter, and I was completely hooked. I’ve been a chapter member ever since.

Alexis: Mary, thank you so much for being with us on Happily Ever After Thoughts. I’ve been cheering you on from the sidelines for a while and I’m so thrilled to see this book go into print.

Mary is curious about what readers think makes a hero sexy. Let her know in a comment and you will be entered to win a signed copy of SPIRITED and some cool swag! Check out this excerpt!

Excerpt from SPIRITED:
Jules sat dumbfounded in the bedroom of a Greek god. He had espresso brown eyes, curly black hair, a long nose that had probably been broken a time or two, and a sexy, dimpled chin. His tan, muscular body was covered by a chest full of springy hair that begged to be touched. Dang! He even smelled good, like soap and the salty Tidewater air.

Ohmigawd, he’s a walking condom commercial.

He scowled at her, waiting for an answer. Although to save her life she couldn’t think of anything. Where was she? More important, what was she doing here? Then a mental switch flipped and it all became clear.

That freaking ghost! Jules couldn’t very well tell a cop she stumbled into his apartment because a ghost made her do it. He’d haul her off to the loony bin.

“Well.” Jules fidgeted against the cuffs and tried to adjust to a more dignified position on the bed. So not happening. “No, not really. I was trying to go home but, uh . . . locked myself out.”

He arched an eyebrow at her but didn’t say anything.

“I know this looks bad but just ask Big Jim. He’ll vouch for me.”

“And Big Jim? Who’s that, your pimp?”

“What? No!” She laughed and shook her head at the absurd thought. “He’s my dad.”

“Is that what they’re calling them these days?” He scoffed but didn’t give her time to respond. “There’s no one named Big Jim in this building. Try again, the truth this time.”

“Ernie Ward! Ernie is my dad.”

“I thought his name was Jim.” He shook his head. He made a sound like a buzzer. “Wrong again. I’ve known Ernie for years but I’ve never seen you before. Want to try another name, honey?”

His biceps flexed, arms still folded across his chest, as if he wanted to move but barely restrained himself. The sight was distracting. He wasn’t exactly muscle-bound, just finely honed. He stood fierce and masculine like an ancient warrior. Intimidating but ruthlessly sexy. It made her want to . . . She shook herself inwardly.

Why couldn’t she think straight? This so wasn’t like her. She didn’t go gooey over any guy, regardless of how ruggedly handsome. But her heart pounded at an erratic pace and she’d once again lost the thread of the conversation. What had he just asked?

Think, Jules! Ignore the instant pull of pointless physical attraction. It had never done her any favors in the past anyway. Something about him must be repellent. Find it!

She looked at him again, this time skating her gaze past his naked chest and sexy arms and moving down.

Oh, it couldn’t be.

She blinked, astonished.

He wore bright yellow pajama pants, covered in lambs.

Resisting the urge to laugh, she latched on to righteous indignation and straightened her shoulders. This condescending jerk treated her like a criminal, handcuffed her and called her a liar. Oh, he was going down.

“My name’s Jules. Not honey,” she snapped. “And Big Jim—Ernie—is my father. He lives in this building and I live with him.”

“I highly doubt it. Hookers don’t live here,” he said, tugging a red T-shirt over his head.

“Excuse me?” she yelled. “I’m not a hooker, and you owe me an apology!”

“Really?” he said, giving her an obvious once-over, his gaze settling on her bustier.

Her cheeks burned.

“Wait. I can explain.”

“Enlighten me.” He narrowed his eyes, doubt etched on his face.

“See, there was this costume party and . . .” Her words trailed off. How to explain the theme of her college reunion without sounding like an imbecile for dressing in the ridiculous outfit just to win a blue ribbon? Now that she thought about it, stupid might aptly describe her decision-making skills tonight. “Well, there was a Pimp and Ho party earlier tonight. I was on my way home from it—”

“And you just happened to climb into my window?”

Jules opened her mouth to respond, but doubted he’d believe her anyway. So she settled on a half-truth. “It was a mistake. I meant to climb into Big Jim’s window, but it was jammed and yours was . . . open.”

“Ah ha!” His mouth twisted into a satisfied grin. “You admit to breaking and entering.”

“Not breaking. Just entering. And who in his right mind sleeps in this city without a screen in his window anyway?” Oops! She hadn’t meant to say that last part, but she pushed on. “If you’ll just let me go find Big Jim—”

“Don’t think so.” With a grim expression on his face, he tugged her to her feet. “Time to go.”

“Where are we going?” Jules dragged her heels, her stilettos scraping the wooden floorboards.

Still in his pajama bottoms, he jammed his feet into a pair of loafers.

Jules gaped. The gladiator image of him fizzled with each passing second. “Are you really planning to go out in public dressed like an overgrown four-year-old?”

“Shut. Up,” he growled, jerking on a knee-length, brown leather coat. “Say another word and I’ll charge you with resisting arrest.”

“Wait, uh, I think there’s been some mistake.”

“You bet your sweet ass, there has.”

“Where . . . where . . .” Jules swallowed in an effort to keep her voice from shaking. “Where are we going?”

“You’re gonna spend the night in lockup.”

“Please, not jail!” Her words ended on a squeak, but she couldn’t help it.

Earth-bound ghosts, bent on driving the living crazy, seemed to love hanging out in graveyards and jails. When they realized she could actually hear them, she’d be defenseless.

The needy ones would annoy her, but the evil ghosts—who’d managed to elude the hell beasts that usually put them where they belonged—they could attack en masse.

Their vicious thoughts would seep into her consciousness like a staticky radio she couldn’t turn off. They could strip her of her sanity. A single night in jail nearly drove her mad once before. She doubted she’d survive it a second time.

A Writer with Writers

Writing romance novels can be a rather solitary occupation, especially living on an island where there is only one other member of the Romance Writers of America. So I am in heaven this year because I have writers visiting me from the mainland once a month!

Yes, in January I had the wonderful Marie Patrick, historical romance author, critique partner,  and fellow blogger. She visited with her husband and her goal was to have an enjoyable vacation. Of course, we still talked writing which was such a thrill for me. It is hard to explain to others, even other writers, how hard it is without someone to talk to about the trials and triumphs of the writing process.

In February I was visited by a fellow Ellora’s Cave romance author who focuses on Steampunk and Sci-Fi romance. Getting to brainstorm with Tina Christopher was so exciting. We also did some tourist things that I had never done before like visiting the botanical gardens here. Since she had majored in conservation, the experience was very educational.

This month I have Harlequin New York Times bestselling author Cathy McDavid and one half of the dynamic writing duo of paranormal and contemporary romance, Tia Dani. We have been mixing pleasure (drinks, sightseeing and eating at the Crucian Contessa’s) with writer’s work (editing, writing and a book signing at our local bookstore).  I feel like I have my own writer’s group right here!

Next month I will have a visit from the very bubbly Cristal Ryder, another Ellora’s Cave author, and the following month my editor Grace Bradley will be visiting. I’m am so psyched and my writing muse is drinking in all this creative thought! Can’t wait for more inspiration in the months to come. I just know another Lexi Post book will be born :-)

Favorite Movie Scenes

I am a creature of habit and routine. I also love movies as much as I love books. One of my routines is to iron my work clothes for the week on Sunday mornings (I know, isn’t that just sad?) BUT while I’m ironing, I treat myself to a movie (I love the Turner Classic Movie channel). So this last Sunday morning, I had the good fortune to turn on My Fair Lady (yes, I love this movie!) and what do you know, it was my favorite scene. Audrey Hepburn is all dressed up for the races and doesn’t she look absolutely beautiful but when she says, and I quote “Come on, Dover, move your bloomin’ ass”, I can’t help myself…I crack up. EVERY TIME, no matter how many times I’ve seen it.

Which got me to thinking. There are always scenes in movies, as well as books, that are so well done, they make you laugh, cry, sigh or even gasp…case in point, the movie Australia….Hugh Jackman (be still my heart) spends much of the movie looking kinda scruffy (but oh so gorgeous) but in this scene, he meets the heroine at a dance and he is ALL cleaned up and…well….I couldn’t stop myself. I actually gasped. In front of my DH, who had to ask if I was okay (and no, I couldn’t explain why I gasped, just that I was all right….and did I replay that scene when he wasn’t around….oh, you bet!).

Forgive me, I have once again digressed. I was talking about favorite scenes. In The Legend of Zorro, it’s when Antonio Banderas and Catherine Zeta-Jones dance, which is wonderful, but my favorite scene from that movie? The sword fight in the stable. Loved it.

Open Range? The gunfight. Spectacular! Phenomenal!

Dances with Wolves….actually no stand out scene….the entire movie is fabulous (as was the book), but if I had to pinpoint one scene, it’s when Kevin Costner and Mary McDonnell are at the river and she says “I am in mourning” before they start kissing.

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off? Who can say that the scene where Ferris Bueller is on the float during the parade and he sings Danke Shoen as well as Twist and Shout isn’t their favorite?

Steel Magnolias has that heartbreaking scene at the funeral when Sally Field breaks down but when Olympia Dukakis grabs Shirley MacLaine and says “Here! Hit Weezer!”, you laugh even though you’ve been crying. You just can’t help yourself.

And in Pretty Woman, my favorite scene (and it’s not the happily ever after scene which may surprise you) but the one where Richard Gere and Julia Roberts are going to the opera. He shows her the necklace then snaps the lid of the jewel box closed and she gives out that burst of surprised laughter. Did you know that scene was never written into the script? It was an adlib by Richard Gere but was so perfect in its execution, Garry Marshall kept it in.

So, I’ve told you some of my favorite movie scenes….what are some of yours?

As always, happy reading (and movie viewing!)

Before “Once Upon A Time…” and PASSION OF SLEEPY HOLLOW Giveaway

Do you remember in school when the teacher made us read a novel and a collective groan followed? Maybe we had to read up to Chapter Four or maybe just the first two chapters, but no matter the length of that first assignment of a novel, I remember skipping the introduction, the author’s note, the preface, the prologue. Whatever it was that came before the first words, before the “Once upon on a time…,” I just wanted to get to the meat of the story. Or maybe I had waited too late to start reading and just wanted to get the assignment done :-}

Then I discovered romance novels and quickly learned that the prologue was a key component of the story and with it I had a hint of what to look forward to in the story, or at the very least discovered why a character was the way he or she was. But still I didn’t read anything else that might come before that.

So when my editor suggested I add an Author’s Note to the beginning of my stories I groaned. Why do that? No one would read it? But then my agent agreed with the idea. Why? Well, because I write erotic romances inspired by classic literature and she thought it was a good opportunity to summarize the original story so readers who hadn’t read it could gain another level of understanding from my stories. Okay, so how could I argue with that logic?

As a result, all my erotic romances have an Author’s Note. I know, it sounds very educational and boring, and the truth is, a reader can enjoy my stories without ever having read the original. BUT if someone was very familiar with the original classic or DID read my author’s note, then she would gain another whole level of satisfaction from my story. I guess you could say my Author’s Note is like the cliff notes to a classic.

Just for fun I have included my Author’s Note to Passion of Sleepy Hollow. But even more importantly I have included a rafflecopter for a chance to win the whole book! And if you want to confess in a comment whether you read anything before the “Once upon a time…” you can have a chance to win too :-)

Always, Lexi

Passion of Sleepy Hollow was inspired by Washington Irving’s short story, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, published in 1820, featuring the famous schoolteacher Ichabod Crane. Despite his abject fear of the dark and obsession with ghost stories, Ichabod’s attraction to the beautiful Katrina Van Tassel drives him to trek to her father’s party where he discovers the bountiful farm Katrina is destined to inherit.

Though well aware of “Brom Bones” and his long relationship with Katrina, Ichabod puts in his bid for her hand. After what appears to be a rejection, Ichabod leaves the party late at night only to be chased by the Headless Horseman, who throws his head at Ichabod. The next day Ichabod has disappeared with nothing but a smashed pumpkin left upon the trail. Irving suggests that Brom may know a bit more about the disappearance than he allows. In the end, Katrina accepts Brom’s proposal.

But what if Ichabod had the last laugh by initiating a curse upon the village of Sleepy Hollow and luring Brom away from Katrina forever?
