I'M HOPING THERE WILL BE COOKIES!

Hey ya’all.  Hope everyone is doing good today.  Things are great here and, as usual, Stupid Girl is at work in my neighborhood.  Remember her?  My alter ego who takes the blame for everything strange and unusual (translation: stupid) that I do?  Of course you do.  And have I got a doosie of a story for you this week!

A friend of mine that I used to work with at the previous day job passed away this week and there were a lot of emails flying around giving information on his death and services.  There was a wrong address email and then the ensuing corrections, and I was getting information from multiple sources.  Some emails were more informative than others, some less.  LOL  Unfortunately, I can’t blame the emails for what happened…because I did have the correct address AND the correct date in one of those messages.

So…here’s what happened.  I get up, get dressed, and head to the funeral.  All is going well.  I’m right on time, with just a few minutes to spare.  So I will be able to catch up with my old friends before the services.

Excellent!

I arrive and get a good parking spot.  It is impressive how many people have turned out for Jim’s funeral and I am happy for his family.  I enter and right inside the door, a sweet lady greets me with a handshake and a big smile.

She asks if I am family.

I say, “No.  I used to work with Jim at Honeywell.”

A strange look crosses her face and she nods and says, “Oh, how wonderful.  Well, please go on in and have a seat.”

Oh-kay.

So I go through a line of greeters, shaking hands and introducing myself as a friend who used to work with Jim.  Not a single person questions this.  They all nod and smile and welcome me warmly.

I sign in at the table where the little book is and find a seat at the back, wondering at the fact that I don’t recognize anyone.  Certainly out of all these people, there would be one person we used to work with that I know.  What about the friends who forwarded me the note?  But there are quite a few people there, so I guess it’s not surprising that I can’t find them.

So I sit back to enjoy the slide show that is playing.  Strange…I don’t see Jim in any of the pictures.  All I see is some old woman.  Then they flash a slide with her name…Ida Mae…and her birth and death dates.

Huh?

Strange…she died about the same time as Jim.

Okay, I’m a little slow at times, but not completely oblivious.  So I get up and slip back to the sign-in desk and ask the woman, “Excuse me.  Whose funeral is this?”

She looks at me like I just beamed down from The Enterprise and says, “It’s Ida Mae’s.”

Shit!

“Oh.  Really?”  I smile and never skip a beat as I say, “I must be in the wrong place.  I’m looking for Jim’s funeral.”

She nods and leans back (away from me) as she points to a man at the door and says, “You should talk to him.  He will know where your friend is.”

“Thank you.”  I smile and head for the guy at the door.

“Excuse me, sir.  The woman at the sign-in table said I should ask you.  I’m looking for my friend Jim’s funeral.  Can you direct me to the right place?”

His eyebrows raise so high they are almost buried in his hairline.  “Uh, I’m sorry.  Jim’s funeral is next Friday.”

Shit!

I nod and give him my best oh-crap look.  “Ah, that explains it.  I thought it was today.”

He shakes his head and looks like he’s trying to assess my mental state.  “They tried to schedule the services for today, but we were already booked.  So we had to slide it to next week.”

I smile and nod and thank him for the information as I stand up straight and try to walk out the door looking like I know what the hell I am doing.

Seriously?

I show up at the wrong funeral?

Who does that?

Stupid Girl, that’s who!!!!!

So I get in my truck and waste no time pulling out of the parking lot before the little men with the white jackets show up.

Two miles down the road, I get a call on my cell phone.  It’s my friend Jan.  She sounds confused.  “Hi.  How are you?”

I smile.  “I’m fine.  Are you at Ida Mae’s?”

“Yes.  Where the heck are you?  Am I the only one who got the wrong day?”

I laugh.  “I’m 2 miles down the road.  I just left Ida’s.  Why don’t I come back and get you and we can have lunch.”

So…I make a u-turn and head back to the church.

In the meantime, I put in a call to my friend Pam…the one who sent me the email information.  She doesn’t answer, so I leave a message.  “Hi Pam.  This is Lori.  Are you going to the funeral today or next week?  I decided to go today.  Ida Mae looks great, but Jim won’t be there until next week.  Call me.”

The thing that really pisses me off about all of this…I missed the cookie table.  Turns out, my friend Jan did exactly the same thing I did…she told everyone she worked with Jim at Honeywell…and, again, no one caught on.  She gets all the way inside, realizes she’s at the wrong funeral, and goes back out.  But on the way out, she spots the cookie table and asks, “Do you think Ida would mind if I took a cookie?”

Shit!

How the hell did I miss the cookie table?

HERE’S YOUR SIGN………..

Imagine how tickled they will be to see me and Jan back there again next week.  Is it possible to make money being a professional funeral-goer?

I'm hoping there will be cookies.

Update to the story:

I showed up again the following Friday.  This time my friend Jan couldn't make it.  So I not only grabbed a cookie for myself, but I mailed one to Jan.  Hope she liked it.  :)

There was also a very cute moment that occurred as we were waiting for the services to begin that I must share with you.  Now, keep in mind that there were 6 or 7 of us sitting together in the pews and we all worked together in the IT department at Honeywell (with Jim).  Some of us were computer programmers, some were systems programmers...but we were all lifelong computer professionals who are now retired.

A man who sat in front of us turned around to introduce himself and find out who we were.   We told him we worked with Jim at Honeywell, so he smiled and asked, "Oh, then you all know computers?"  To a man, every one of us shook our heads and answered "No," in unison.

Hope no one at Honeywell sees this and wonders what the hell they were paying us for all those years.  LOL

To my friend Jim...Rest In Peace, my friend.

That's my story, sad and silly, and I'm stickin' to it.  Hang on tight

now 'cuz we're gonna go real, real fast!
Love ya,
Kayce

New Contract!!!!

I am so thrilled to be able to share this news with all of you. I recently submitted my novel, A Kiss in the Shadows, to Crimson Romance and they offered me a contract! Whooo-hooo! This is especially gratifying because the novel was so difficult for me to write. I love my hero, Brock MacDermott, although he was a little reticent to have his story told…it took a while for him to open up to me (with me constantly pushing, asking…heck, begging for him to talk). Once he did, though…..I was in heaven. And my heroine is such a feisty, spunky thing, I fell in love with her, too.
The projected release date is October 12 of this year! I’m so happy, I could bust!
Here’s a quick summary. Danger and redemption lurk in the mountains of New Mexico. A killer with no conscience is on the loose, one who seems to be one step ahead of the law.
Sheriff turned Bounty Hunter Brock MacDermott knows exactly what Zeb Logan is capable of because he has the scars to prove it. In an ambush two years ago, Logan killed Brock’s brother, sister-in-law and their son while Logan’s brother nearly killed Eamon, Brock’s youngest brother. Brock has never forgiven himself for failing to keep any of them safe. Driven by his single-minded mission to find Logan and make him pay, hoping that by doing so he can finally find peace, he rides from town to town on his lonely quest—always careful to keep emotional attachments at arms length…
…until Stevie Rae Buchanan insists on joining him. She upsets his careful plans with her kindness, courage and determination, making him long for a different life, one with her by his side. But she, too, has seen first hand what this ruthless killer can do and she has vowed to stop him before he can harm anyone else, with or without Brock’s help.
A Kiss in the Shadows is the first in a trilogy about the MacDermott brothers. I’m currently hard at work on A Kiss in the Morning Mist, which is Eamon’s story.

As always, happy reading!

Dead Right by Brenda Novak

A lovely Mississippi woman, Madeline Barker, can’t get over the unsolved murder of her father.  Who would murder a beloved pastor twenty years ago?
A new death in her small town results in a finding of evidence from Pastor Barker’s death, yet the local police force can’t get past their initial accusations against Madeline’s step-family.  Madeline takes it into her own hands, scrapes together all her money, and hires a well-known California private investigator, Hunter Solozano.Dead Right
After a breakup with her longtime boyfriend, Madeline is surprised at her attraction to the surfer-looking P.I.
Hunter has his own baggage and isn’t happy about the beautiful woman who hires him.  Without bias as to the evidence he finds, Hunter is worried about how the results will affect Madeline.  He can’t subtract her family from the evidence, yet there’s a mystery player sending threats.
As a reader, I was surprised at the illegal and unethical activity attached to Pastor Barker.  I would’ve appreciated Novak to pick a different “problem,” yet the mystery and romance kept the pages turning.

Happy reading,

Sabrina York's LAIRD OF HER HEART and a Giveaway

Laird of her Heart: Book One in the Dundragon Trilogy by Sabrina York

When Maggie Spencer is mysteriously transported to the Scotland of her ancestors, she is stunned to come face to face with him. Dominic Dundragon, the man she’s been half in love with her whole life. A man who’s been dead for 700 years.
They both have enemies aplenty. Will she have a chance to win his love, or will this adventure end in disaster?

Read an excerpt
Maggie yelped as, without warning, the burly warrior named Declan whipped her up into his arms and tossed her over his shoulder. To her horror, she lost the hold on her locket.
“Wait,” she cried. She wriggled to get free, but his grip was too hard. When she pummeled his back with her fists as he strode from the circle of stones, he chuckled. The beast. But to be fair, he was so large, it would have felt like a kitten batting him. “Put me down.”
“I willna,” he said. “The Mackintosh will decide how you die.”
All right. That shut her up. For a minute. “Die? Why do I need to die?” What the hell had she done to him?
The man following, an enormous blond with a scar tracking his cheek bent down to peer at her. “The Mackintosh’s doona tolerate spies.”
“I’m not a spy.” Seriously. She wriggled more and Declan smacked her ass.
   Smacked her ass.
She’d kill him when she got free. Just kill him.
“Yer wearing the Cameron colors,” the blond said. “And the Mackintosh’s doona—”
“Right. I know. The Mackintosh’s doona tolerate spies.” Her head was starting to spin from being upside down and jounced around with each step. Her temper was on a short leash. “But honestly, if I were a spy, would I wear the Cameron colors? It seems a little counterproductive in my opinion. I mean, if I’m spying and all. I might as wear a sign that says, oh, I dunno, honk if you love spies.”
His brow rumpled but he didn’t respond. At least, not to her. “She speaks strangely,” he complained to Declan.
Her captor snorted a laugh. “She dresses strangely too.”
“Aye. She does at that. I’ve heard the Cameron lasses are a wild lot, but I had no idea—”
“I’m. Not. A. Cameron.” She reached out and smacked the blond, but only because he came close enough. He reared back and gaped at her—as though he’d never been smacked before—and then he quickly moved out of range.
It hardly mattered, because, apparently, they had reached their destination, a camp on the edge of the woods. The sounds of nickering horses and clanks of pots gave her her first clue—she was facing the other way, after all.
Her second clue was that Declan dropped her on the ground. She landed with an oof. She glared at him. He didn’t seem to mind in the slightest. “Go get my brother, Ewan,” he barked, and the blond trotted off to one of the larger tents.
When she stood and brushed off her jeans, Declan bristled and she shot him a sardonic glare. Did he think she was stupid enough to run away? For one thing, these enormous men had her surrounded. For another, she never ran. Not if she could help it.
Instead, she made a quick survey of her surroundings. The camp was little more than a huddle of tents with the forest on one side and a sweeping plain on the other. A small herd of horses were hobbled to one side and a deer roasted over a pit fire. An entire deer. Before she could silence the thought—she often had that problem—she said, “You killed Bambi.”
Declan’s brow rumpled. “I dinna kill anyone.” And then he asked, “Who is Bambi?”
“Never mind.” She crossed her arms and turned away pretending to ignore them. But she wasn’t. She was aware they were all staring at her like she was a curiosity in a zoo, but she was taking in tiny details as well. Like the fact that their clothes were all handmade and simple. Their hair appeared to have been cut with a chainsaw and their beards were scraggly and long. Their weapons were what made her mind really start to spin though.
One held a crossbow that dated from the thirteenth century. Another had a Mackintosh dirk that resembled one she’d seen in a museum once. Declan had a simple calfskin sporran tied to his belt.
Odd. Could she have wandered into some renaissance faire? But no. It had been evening when she stepped into the woods and now it was daytime. Early afternoon. And the acres of woods around the house belonged to the family. It couldn’t be—
“So.” She flinched as a deep, melodious voice wafted to her on a hint of humor. Shivers danced through her, along with a prickling sense of premonition. “You’ve captured a Cameron spy?”
She turned slowly and froze as her gaze landed on him. On that so-familiar face. Broad, handsome, savage. Much more captivating than the sketch had been. Much more captivating by far.
She must be hallucinating. She had to be.
He was the hero of her dreams come to life.
Dominic Dundragon, Laird of the Mackintosh clan.
Large, looming and in the flesh.
Her head went woozy. Her vision blurred. And then, for the first time in her life, she fainted.
