An Excellent Visit

             Hello, gentle readers! Hope you are all well and staying safe!

            My son and his girlfriend came to visit last weekend. It was the first time I’ve met her (we’ve chatted on the phone and texted) and she was as lovely as can be. I enjoyed getting to know her.

Being in lock down for the past year, only going to the grocery, the pharmacy, and work twice a week, I was unprepared (and out of shape) to go gallivanting all over creation (properly masked, of course, and physically distanced whenever possible), but it was worth it (I was able to recover after they went home). We went up to Sedona, which is lovely any time of year, but the weather was perfect for this spring day. Had lunch outdoors so we could look at the view…if you’ve never been to Sedona, Arizona, let me just say the view is spectacular. Breath-taking. The red rocks, especially when the sun is shining on them, is nothing short of awe-inspiring. I attempted to take pictures, but I'm not very good, although I will say, I got some fantastic shots of my thumb! This was definitely not taken by me (notice, no thumb). 

For just plain fun, we went to this little place out in Apache Junction called Goldfield’s Ghost Town. Took a train ride where the conductor pointed out the relics of the old mining operation and learned that the mine is still producing gold. Also took a tour of the bordello. Learned a bunch of stuff I didn’t know, which kinda surprised me a little. I’ve done a lot of research into the old west, but the tour-guide told me things I hadn’t read or heard of before. Which just goes to prove that research is never quite done (I always consider it a plus when I can learn something new). Of course, while I was there listening to this woman speak and seeing the inside of a bordello, I came up with yet another idea for a story (this is in addition to the one I came up with just a little over two weeks ago). It’s all good though. I jotted down some notes for when I’m ready to write it (during their visit, I still managed to write in the mornings…didn’t matter what time I hit the sack the night before, I was still up before the sun rose).  

We went up to Cave Creek, too, to shop for souvenirs and listen to some really good live music.

And we ate a lot (my son is a foodie). After a year of restricting my carb intake, I admit, I splurged a little. I had cake! I had bread! I had French fries! I even had an alcoholic beverage! I know! I was so bad! I’m not even upset that I gained back two pounds (well, that’s a lie…I am upset a little, but seriously, it was worth it…when you’re a self-described carboholic and haven’t had any of the things you love in over a year…yeah, it was worth it).

It was sad to see them pack up and go home, but I’m so looking forward to their next visit!

On the Edge, A Dublin Nights Novel by Brittney Sahin

The first two things in this romance are a paradox to me because I love Dublin, Ireland and hate fighting.  So, of course, I had to read this story and find out what Brittney Sahin  creates to make me love the tale.

Granted an internship in Dublin, Anna, filled with excitement and fear, packs up and leaves the U.S. for the summer.  

Her roommate in Ireland is as good as a blind date.  She found Leslie online, the supposed woman who turns out to be a man.  Only she meets Adam instead on her entry of the apartment.

Adam is Leslie's best friend, a fighter - kind of like boxing only worse and illegal, and a billionaire.  Quite the unique combination.  Leslie had been beat up pretty bad in the ring, so Adam is sent to meet Anna.

The meeting of Adam and Anna is uncomfortable, but it is even worse when Anna starts her internship and finds Adam is her boss and owner of the tech company.  

Leslie is still a big part, but hardly seen.  He also fights and lost a lot of money.  Adam had quit fighting, but is put in a position to get his friend out of trouble and ultimately to keep Anna safe.  Adam is blackmailed into returning to the fight, almost a bad addiction for him.

Let's not forget, during the close contact Adam and Anna continually have, they are extremely attracted and can't hide that fact.  I have to like her because she abhors fighting just like me.  He has some hidden good points other than being a fine business man.  Between his looks and charitable goodwill, Anna just might be able to find a good man in him.

Let's hope she gets a job through her internship, can overcome the distance from her family, and he finds a way to stay away from the fighting!

A New Story? Now? Really?

 

         Hello, gentle readers. Hope you are well and staying safe. 

So here’s what happened. I’m going along at a steady clip, writing every weekday morning before the day job on my current work in progress when BAM! Out of nowhere comes the opening scene of another story. Now, I knew eventually I’d be working on it…it’s the fourth in a series (the first story is done but hasn’t been submitted to anyone as yet, the second is half-way done, and the third has been started) so why would my brain bypass the end of the second story, completely gloss over the third story and go right into the fourth?

I wish I knew the answer to that question because it seems to happen all the time.

Is it any wonder why it takes me so long to finish a story? Is it any wonder that I have (now) over fourteen manuscripts in various stages of progress (and that doesn’t count all the ideas that are percolating in my brain)?

Well, since that opening scene was in my head and wouldn’t go away, I had to write it. Had no choice really. The voice was persistent! Demanding! Totally unreasonable in regard to what I planned for that morning!

It was him. The hero. And he wasn’t whispering in my ear. He was yelling! I’m not fond of being yelled at so…in order to shut him up (at least for the time being), I did what I was told. That seemed to quiet him and he stopped shouting, but that hasn’t stopped the whispering. And I’m listening to all he’s telling me, jotting down plot points and back story as quickly as he’s giving me the information.

I’m hoping, once he’s satisfied, I can go back to my current work in progress before I lose that tenuous train of thought.
