Unafraid by Nyssa Kathryn

Amber Ridge is a quaint and cozy town.  Just where Aspen Davies can travel several states, room with a friend, and leave her ex and controlling mom behind.  She can find a nice cafe and continue to write her romance novels.

Jesse Hayes feels he's doing the right thing by letting a room to his friend, Aspen.  The long and unusual hours he works as a police officer will give her privacy while she familiarizes herself with the town.  He prefers to keep a distance between them.  After all, she is hurt from a breakup, and it is impossible not to be interested in her.

For such a cute town, not a single restaurant or cafe serves good coffee.  Matter of fact, it is awful.  The English lady who owns a tea and coffee house makes the best pies but needs lessons on how to make a good brew.   It will be a great hangout for writing and a place to keep her away from gorgeous and wonderful Jesse.

Aspen begins receiving texts from her hard-to-handle mom.  After replying with her new address, her mom claims Luke, former boyfriend, needs to see Aspen.  That would not happen on her watch.  Why did Aspen give her mom the address?  Mistake number one.

Space in town is tight when her mom shows up.  Discovering that Luke has a criminal record, Jesse's hackles rise when Luke is also spotted.  Aspen pretends it's manageable, but her nerves are shivering, her writing is not happening, and doors and windows need to be locked.

A hug and more attention are offered from Jesse, when the danger mounts.  It's okay, they're just friends.  Really good friends, which is a perfect way to start something more if they can both drop their guards at the same time.

At the same time, Luke, with the help from another, plots to have or let no one else have Aspen.

Increasing danger, Aspen's faltering confidence, and Jesse's badge make a combination of safety and an opening for romance.

Happy reading,

Dawn

A story that could cost her everything…

Investigative journalist Quinn Ross isn’t a woman who can just let major news pass her by. So, when she stumbles across a story like no other, she makes it her mission to report it to the masses.

She doesn’t count on the lengths to which some may go to keep her story from seeing the light of day. When Quinn suddenly finds herself in need of escape, she heads straight for tiny Marble Falls and her brother, Mason.

When he’s not running his company’s IT department, Wyatt Gray—former SEAL and co-owner of Marble Protection—spends every spare minute searching for those who betrayed him. The ones who turned him and his teammates into something beyond mere mortals. He doesn’t have time for distractions—but that’s exactly what he gets, in the form of his best friend’s sassy, spunky, sexy sister…who’s moved in right across the hall.

From the moment they meet, Quinn and Wyatt’s chemistry is combustible. But they both have big secrets. Then there’s Mason, who may consider Wyatt a brother, but he might still kill him for lusting after his baby sister.

But soon, none of that matters. When a killer sets his sights on Quinn, any chance at happiness with Wyatt may end before it’s had a chance to begin.

WYATT EXCERPT

Quinn flicked her gaze from the TV to Wyatt, then back again.

The man wasn’t touching her. Not even close. In fact, an entire person could fit between them on the couch.

She’d sat down first, expecting him to sit close. He hadn’t. He’d sat down on the other end. At least a shoulder-to-shoulder touch would be better than the ridiculous distance between them.

Was it possible she smelled bad? She’d jumped in the shower as soon as she’d gotten home, but it had been quick. Plus, she probably hadn’t spent as much time washing as usual because she’d spent the entire time thinking of different ways to maim Darren if he ever got close to her again.

“Did I choose the wrong movie?”

No. You chose the wrong seat.

Quinn drew her attention back to Wyatt. If she was honest, she had no idea what was going on with the movie. Not a single clue. “Sorry, I’m a bit distracted.”

“A bit” was one big fat understatement.

“What’s got you distracted?”

The story. Her old boss. Why the heck Wyatt was still so damn far away from her. “It’s nothing.”

Wyatt’s expression didn’t change. He just sat there looking perfect, waiting for her to spill her guts. Wasn’t going to happen.

“Okay.”

When his attention flicked back to the screen, a moment of irritation swirled through her. The man didn’t even attempt to scoot closer. There was no sneaky arm around the back of the couch. No subtle shuffle. Nothing.

“So, tell me, why no romance movies?” he asked.

Quinn scoffed. “They fill women’s heads with lies, giving them unrealistic expectations of dating in the real world.”

Wyatt chuckled. “That’s a bold statement. Give me an example.”

Had the man never watched a romance movie?

“Okay, how about the grand gestures of love, which are painted as normal. Flying the woman to Europe at a moment’s notice, organizing flash mobs, filling rooms with a thousand roses. That’s not real. Men don’t do that.”

His attention remained on the TV. “Some guys probably do that. Maybe you haven’t been spending time with the right men.”

Well, that was a given. “Come on, do you know anyone who’s done any of those things?”

Wyatt’s silence gave her the answer she was looking for.

“Romance today is a card and a kiss on Valentine’s Day. A bouquet of flowers on an anniversary. And that’s if you’re lucky.”

Wyatt lifted his shoulder. “Women could always go the extra mile for the man.”

“Oh, I’m sure they do. However, when the reciprocation stops, so do the gestures.”

His brows pulled together. “I didn’t know you were such a pessimist.”

“I prefer the term realist.” She gave Wyatt an innocent smile. It did kind of sound like she hated men. And romance. And love. Which wasn’t true at all. She just preferred the real and the raw. It saved her from disappointment. “Take us, for example,” Quinn continued. “In any romance movie, the guy would not be sitting so far from the girl.”

And close proximity on a movie night wasn’t even a large expectation. Not in Quinn’s mind, at least.

“You’d like me to sit closer?”

“Yes.” She’d prefer the man to be a lot closer. “I’d also like to know if I smell bad.”

Wyatt wrinkled his nose in confusion. “You don’t smell bad. You smell good. Really good. It’s actually a large reason for the distance.”

Smelling good didn’t sound like a reason for distance to her. “Why would me smelling good make you want to sit over there?”

“Because the closer I am, the more I want to touch you. And if I start touching you, I probably won’t be able to stop.”

A warmth heated in Quinn’s chest. “And why is that a bad thing?” It only sounded good to Quinn. Really good.

Wyatt ran a hand through his hair. It was the first time she’d seen him look uncomfortable. Like he didn’t want to tell her the reason.

Then it hit Quinn. “It’s because of my brother, isn’t it?”

When Wyatt’s silence continued, Quinn knew she’d hit the nail on the head.

Blowing out a frustrated breath, she began to stand, but stopped at Wyatt’s hand on hers.

“I like you. A lot. But your brother is like family to me. I feel like I should speak to him first, preferably in person, before anything happens between us.”

Quinn loved her brother. But he had no place in this relationship. He had no place in this room. “If you like me, kiss me.”

- Mason Excerpt -

Sage was about to search for a dustpan when her flashlight landed on shoes.

Large shoes, connected to legs standing close.

When her muddled brain caught up to the fact that there was a living, breathing human standing directly in front of her, she let out a loud gasp before taking a hurried step back. The crunch of glass beneath her shoes had her attempting to lift her feet too quickly and losing balance.

The phone dropped from her fingers, throwing the room into darkness. She would have toppled over and fallen directly on the glass had she not been saved by hands on her upper arms.

They immediately pulled her upright so that her body was pressed to his. The hands were firm and strong but gentle.

She held her breath, almost too scared to breathe for the way her breasts pressed against his big chest. Heat radiated off him. And he smelled good. Really good. Musky and woodsy.

Slowly, big hands trailed from her upper arms to her waist. His hands were so large, they seemed to encompass her entire middle.

She should be scared. But she didn’t feel any fear. She felt something else. Something she couldn’t quite define.

Her hands went to his chest. But instead of pushing him away, like any normal person would do, they glided over the muscular ridges.

He was tall. So tall her fingers only touched his stomach and had to slide up to feel his chest.

Like they had a mind of their own, her hands kept exploring. Rising to his shoulders, where she felt their thickness. He was hard all over.

Slowly, her hands slid to his biceps. They were huge. But then, everything about the man felt huge.

Just then, the hand on her waist tightened. At the same time, she felt a thumb shift to the underside of her shirt, touching her bare skin.

That was enough to pull her out of the trance. He could be anyone. And he was touching her. His body was pressed firmly against hers.

Fear replaced any desire that had begun to build. Her heart sped up.

As if sensing her fear, the stranger immediately dropped his hands from her body. He took a step back, giving her the space she needed.

Only, once she had that space, she didn’t know whether she felt relieved or bereft.

Suddenly, the lights in the room flicked on, and for a moment she was blinded by the brightness.

Holy hell, it felt like she was looking directly at the sun.

Scrunching her eyes shut, Sage had to blink a few times before she could make out the large blurry figure by the switch.

He’d moved fast. One second he’d been touching her, the next he was across the room. And he hadn’t made a sound. Not that it should surprise her. She hadn’t heard the guy enter the building and walk right behind her.

Slowly, the fuzziness began to fade, and she realized the man wasn’t a stranger at all. She’d recognize those piercing blue eyes anywhere.

Mason. The man who sent hot flashes through her system and made her heart thunder whenever he was close.

She said the first words that popped into her head. “What are you doing here?”

She’d spoken the words quietly, but in the silence of the night, they sounded loud. Deafeningly so.

Mason took a step forward. “This is my business, Sage. Why don’t you tell me what you’re doing here?”
