The Duke’s Privateer

(Devilish Dukes, Book 3)

By

Amy Jarecki

Blurb ~

When it comes to women, the Duke of Danby is an audacious rake… but when it comes to ridding the kingdom of smugglers, he’s leading the charge. The Prince Regent has bankrupted the country more than once, and Danby isn’t about to go down with a sinking ship.

The Honorable Eleanor Kent hides behind the image of a self-proclaimed spinster… though in truth she’s one of England’s most sought-after privateers.

When their paths cross at a royal dinner… Danby suspects the stunning redheaded woman is more than she seems. He engages her to consult on a chinoiserie remodel and Eleanor gladly accepts. Indeed, she’d rather keep her enemy close where she can watch his every move. Though neither duke nor lady has a clue of how tangled the web they’re spinning will become. As the heat ratchets up, so does their unbidden attraction. Will they get burned before it’s too late to run?

Excerpt from THE DUKE’S PRIVATEER

Sometimes the act of a man kissing a woman’s hand can mean far more than words can express!

Ready to face yet another charade, Eleanor pushed out the door with her head held high. Except her breath stopped. Her heart leapt. The Duke of Danby smiled, standing beside two of the loveliest chestnut horses she’d ever seen. Their coats glistened in the sunlight, their manes and tails brushed to full, silken sheens.

As she neared, she ran her hand along the neck of the mare already fitted with her saddle. “They’re absolutely beautiful.”

“I’m glad they pass muster.” The duke removed his beaver top hat, his grin making butterflies swarm in her stomach. Undoubtedly, Eleanor’s initial reaction of breathlessness had been caused by the sight of the horses—at least she told herself as much.

Stepping forward, Danby took her hand. “’Tis ever so good to see you again, Miss Kent. Are you well?”

She drew in another breath. This one nearly deep enough to staunch the wicked trembling of her fingers. “Unchanged since yesterday.”

He turned up her palm and kissed it, the warmth of his lips searing through her thin kid-leather gloves.

Bless it, taking deep breaths was no help at all. Now her knees were turning into boneless mollusks. No wonder the duke had gained a reputation for rakishness. The man oozed sensuality.

To add fuel to the fire, Danby didn’t straighten right away but shifted his face up slightly, until his gaze met hers. For a fleeting moment, Eleanor was rendered utterly speechless. She stood dry mouthed with her heart thumping out of rhythm. Did he have any idea what kissing the palm of a woman’s hand did to her insides? Well, as a rake he most likely did. However, Eleanor had never been greeted in such a way. In fact, she couldn’t recall a man ever kissing her palm.

Was he deliberately trying to unnerve her?

Danby’s smile grew as he stretched to his full height—at least six feet tall, making her tip up her chin as he held her gaze. He released her hand and it grew oddly cold. “You approve of my filly?” he asked as if he had no idea of the effect he’d just had.

Squaring her shoulders, Eleanor rubbed her palms together. “I expected no less. Even I read the papers. Your horses oft win at the track.”

“I’ll admit, they are my one indulgence.”

“You only have one?”

“At the moment.”

Veronica Reviews ~ THE DUKE'S DESIRE by Erica Ridley

The Duke's Desire
12 Dukes of Christmas, Book 8
by
Erica Ridley

★★★★
4-Stars
Historical Romance

Meg Church has embraced her spinster lifestyle. She’s opted to enjoy the freedom of not having a husband dictating what she can or can’t do, and extremely happy being outrageous and bold with what she wants and she’s set her eyes on taking Lucien le Duc as a lover…if only in her fantasies…

Lucien le Duc is determined to leave England and return to his native France. A dream since he had to flee with his family during the revolutionary war, Lucien will let nothing change his mind…well almost nothing…there just happens to be a beautiful outspoken woman that may just make him think twice on his feelings of all things English…

Oh I’m so in love with Erica Ridley’s 12 Dukes of Christmas series! These holiday romances are just the right mixture of sweet and heat! Highly recommend!

Sharing what I love,

Badd Motherf*cker: A Badd Brothers novel by Jasinda Wilder

I have to start the year with a bad, bad, Badd, story to excite all readers of exceptionally naughty romance.

Dru Connolly started her wedding day happy, jittery, and beautiful.  That changed real fast before she walked down the isle.

The next thing she knew, she jumped the first outgoing plane from Seattle to a mystery location that ended up being Ketchikan, Alaska.

It's raining.  The street is wet and muddy along with her wedding dress, which is the only clothes she brought.  She stumbles into a local bar, wondering what the hell she's doing.

Sebastian Badd wonders the same as he watches a beautiful woman full of  anger, tears, and a dirty wedding dress barge into his nearly empty establishment.

Something about her makes him behave his badass self and reach out to help.

Dru can't imagine a man being what she needs or wants at this point.

Sebastian doesn't "do" relationships.  One night is long enough.

So why is Dru staying and why is he holding off jumping her bones for more than an hour?

Okay, they hold off, but then the sparks flare and the grinding begins, and continues, and happens repeatedly.  And it's good.  And they have a connection each one is mystified by.

What the hell is going on?!

This is the story to read and take the dull out of January!

Happy reading,

Dawn

~ Excerpt ~

Was she looking for help with a book? Galaxy didn’t do that kind of stuff. It made them too visible.

He learned her sister and brother-in-law had recently been in a car accident, hit by a speeding vehicle in front of a hotel. The brother-in-law had been killed and the sister was still in a coma. Blaze vaguely remembered reading about it online when he was idly skimming—just three paragraphs, and there hadn’t been anything that rang his chimes. Hit and run, that was it. He hated those, because no one was ever made to answer for it, but nothing had seemed out of the ordinary.

Besides, Galaxy didn’t investigate auto accidents. That was what the cops were for. Did that mean she had an overactive imagination and there was little substance to whatever she wanted from him? He mentally shook his head. No, his brother was too much of a pragmatist to send him someone who saw shadows where there were none.

Before he checked further, he decided to reach out to Nolan and get the skinny on Peyton West and her situation. His brother shocked him by having five minutes free at that particular moment.

“She’s not a nutcase,” he said at once. “This isn’t something she made up for one of her novels, I promise you that. This is some serious shit and everyone everywhere is stonewalling her. If you can find out who the driver was, that ought to open up the whole can of worms. But I believe her, Blaze.”

He couldn’t ask for better validation than that.

He was waiting when the black sedan headed down the gravel drive exactly at four o’clock and parked by the hangar. All four of them tried not to prejudge clients before interacting with them. Appearances, as they all knew, could be very deceiving. But the woman who exited the Mercedes, tense and buttoned-up as she was, made every bit of saliva in his mouth dry up.

She was of medium height, the slacks and sweater she wore doing little to disguise the mouthwatering curves of her body or the natural sway of her hips as she walked. Thick, glossy chestnut hair was pulled back tightly into a ponytail. When she came close enough, he could see her eyes were a rich dark green that looked out at him from beneath chocolate lashes. Out of nowhere, he was seized with a desire to strip off her clothes and run his hands over her body.

Dickwad! Asshole!

Where the hell had this come from, anyway, and what the f*ck was wrong with him? He never, ever reacted to clients like this. He’d better get his shit together in a hurry. And figure out why he had lost his brain somewhere on the tarmac.

But then his common sense caught up with him. He saw the rigid way she controlled herself, the look of strain etched into her face and the mixture of rage and panic that swirled in her eyes. It was a look he’d seen in so many of the clients who came to Galaxy. And that was enough to make his hungry dick, the one that had been looking forward to some action tonight, deflate in a hurry. This was business. A mission. This was what they did. What she was here for. Thank god for his SEAL discipline.

He held out a hand to her. “Scott Hamilton, but please, call me Blaze. We’re all used to our military code names.”

They had decided to use those with clients, since they addressed each other that way and there’d be less confusion.

“Peyton West. I have a desperate need for your help, and I can’t stress that word enough.”

He nodded toward the plane, waiting in front of the hangar. “All right. Let’s take a little flight to nowhere and you can tell me all about it.”

My Hopes for 2021

I know that at the turn of the year, people tend to make New Year’s resolutions. Not me. The closest I come to those is on my birthday when I take stock of my life so far and think about where I want to go in the next year.

So when the new year turns, I like to think about what I hope for as it relates to more than just myself. It’s what I hope for my husband and kittens, my family, my friends, my neighbors, and community. It’s what I hope for all Americans and all people around the world. It’s even what I  hope for animals and nature in general. It’s different for each, but I put my hopes out there to the universe. I figure it can’t hurt, and it just might help 😊

Hope is a powerful thing. There is a Greek Myth about Pandora and her box. I’m guessing you may have heard of it.  All the evil ills anyone could think of escaped from Pandora’s box, but she closed it just in time to keep hope inside. Hope motivates. It calms. It gives comfort, and it inspires.

I hope your next year is better than the last one. Most of all, I hope you do not let hope escape from your heart.

Always, Lexi

Happy 2021

Hello, gentle readers! Hope you are all well and staying safe!
Well, Christmas has come and gone and we are looking 2021 square in the eye. It’s been a strange year and if I say it seemed to go slowly, yet flew by at the same time, I think you would understand.
Our holiday was lovely. Quiet. Just the DH and I. We had lasagna, which is my traditional Christmas dinner (because I just can’t do turkey a month apart, as much as I love it). I also made my famous (well, in my circle anyway) cheesecake. I watched “It’s a Wonderful Life” on Christmas Eve, another tradition I’ve been doing for 30 some odd years. You know, every year, I promise myself I won’t cry at the end and every year, I do. I doubt that will change in the years to come. Something about that movie just grabs my heart and squeezes.
So, as I was saying, 2020 has been a very strange year…And yet, I’ve learned some things about myself.
I am a social person…more than I realized. I have a small circle of friends who are very dear to me…quite frankly, I love them. I’ve missed seeing them…and when that “missing” gets to be too much, I will engage a perfect stranger in the supermarket parking lot (physically distanced, of course, and masked) for a short conversation just to hear someone else’s voice.
I’m a hugger by nature and I think I miss that most of all (hahaha—the poor dogs have been on the receiving end of all the hugs I miss giving…I’m not sure if they like it or not, although I will admit, I’ve seen them running when they see me coming with that look in my eye).
Zoom and Duo calls are the not the same as being there, but they will certainly do in a pinch. Emails, too. Since being more or less home-bound for the past couple months, I frequently check up on friends via an email…just a short “Are you okay” email and a couple lines on how I’m doing. I try to do that on a weekly or semi-weekly basis.
I’ve learned that yes, I can work from home (I was afraid I wouldn’t have enough discipline but it turns out, I do).
I’ve learned how much I depend on my DH for nothing other than being there and making me laugh when I become too stressed. I will admit that we have gotten closer and that’s saying something…we’ll be married forty years next month!
And I will celebrate the New Year, again, quietly, just the DH and I and hope that 2021 will be a better year for everyone.
In the meantime, I remain, as always, so grateful…for so many things.
Wishing you all joy and peace, today and always. Happy holidays!
Stay well! Stay safe! And remember, be kind!

Marie
