KATIE'S ROCK by Kayce Lassiter Reviewed by Alexis Walker

If you like Contemporary Cowgirl Fiction, you are going to love Katie’s Rock by Kayce Lassiter. This story has Katie trying to decide between two hunky brothers, Jake and David. But it is far more than the romance between Katie and her suitors. This story is about family, about trusting one’s instincts and decisions, about one’s priorities in life and about taking a risk with your heart. It proves that only by risking everything can one gain everything and that there is life after heartache.

I love every theme that runs through this book because each is brought forth by characters who are human. They have their contemporary foibles, every day occupations, are down to earth, and easy to like. There is no real villain and no real hero, just people. I was a bit envious of Katie that she got to join the MacAllister family because these people became so real, I wanted to sit down and have dinner with them, or go for a horseback ride with them.

This was a great read and I highly recommend it for those who are looking for a little reality with a happily ever after.

Enjoy,
Alexis

See How She Dies by Lisa jackson

Everyone wants to be the lost little girl of Portland’s high society Danver’s family.  Women have tried for years to fit the mold.  Now Adria Nash wants to prove to herself whether she’s the missing London Danvers or the video her adoptive father left her meant nothing.

Adria matches London and London’s dead mother’s looks, personality, and whatever else you can think of to be the missing heiress.  SEE HOW SHE DIES

It’s too bad that Zachary Danver’s has a hard time keeping his hands and mouth off Adria when she arrives from the Midwest to find the truth about her possible biological family.  Zach is a handsome black sheep of the family and has a different interest other than keeping the family fortune to himself to prove Adria is not the missing London.

See How She Dies is a re-edited version of Jackson’s 1994 release.  Most of the story is timeless except for the simple truth behind a DNA test.  Although, a murderer is loose in the story, so there’s still a mystery to be solved or avoided by the characters.

The clan of Danvers siblings all have something to lose if Adria proves to be London, and the ending has a sweet twist.

Happy reading,
Dawn

Interview with Arabella Thorne and a Giveaway!

Alexis: Today we have paranormal romance author, Arabella Thorne  who is giving away a reader’s choice of either I SWEAR MY ROOMMATE IS A VAMPIRE or THE ELF LORD’S REVENGE to one lucky commenter! Welcome Arabella.

When did you know you wanted to be a writer?

Arabella: I’ve been writing since I was twelve. I wanted to create stories that I was in. So the first story I remember was fanfiction,  one involving the TV show The Man from U.N.C.L.E. I was very fond of David McCallum as Ilya Kuryakin. All I can remember of that original tale was it involved a maroon Mustang. (Mustangs were a very popular car at the time.)

I continued to write. Sometimes original tales, but what I remember most is writing stories about the Beatles and soon, Star Trek. I wrote a journal in a spiral bound notebook for over a year in journal/diary form as if I was on the Enterprise. I even gave the Beatles their own ship. I passed it around to my friends in ninth and tenth grade.

I grew up an avid reader. My mom took me to the public library every two weeks until I was able to ride my bike there (It wasn’t that close to the house).

My father was a photo journalist and my mother began working at the L.A. Times when I was five.

I almost majored in English when I went into college, but at the last minute, my oldest brother, who had a degree in English told me: “If you think you’re going to do any creative writing: Think again. You’re going to write critical analysis and essays.” Well I really hated the taste of essay writing I got in English 101, so I majored in art instead. Not because I was a budding Mary Cassatt, but a friend suggested it. And when I said I knew nothing about art, she immediately replied: “That’s okay. They’ll teach you.” (The sad thing is, during my last year of college I found out I could have had a creative writing major. Sigh.)

But after I graduated with my degree in art, go figure: I got a job at the L.A. Times (nepotism works) and I worked there for almost nineteen years.

I first started off writing book reviews while I was a copy messenger. When I moved into the film department as the Film Editor’s desk assistant—then I began freelancing articles. Between the book reviews and other features, I wrote over two hundred pieces for the paper. As well as freelancing as a dance photographer---which got me some great photos of Baryshnikov, among others! The photography also got me published in several books.

From there I just kept going! Writing novels and shoving them under the bed! (Well, the closet really)… The first novel took me two years and I wrote it in while college. I still have it somewhere.

But once I found out about the RWA and joined VOS… that kicked me into high gear.

I currently have one novel: THE ELF LORD’S REVENGE and a novella I SWEAR MY ROOMMATE IS A VAMPIRE.  I am currently working on book two of the Elves of California series: “The Elf Lord’s Secret.”

Alexis: Why did you choose this sub-genre of romance?

Arabella: My sub-genre being, well, historical fantasy with a touch of the paranormal…..

I love magic and elves. Peter Jackson’s vision of the elves in Lord of the Rings films really caught my attention. I was/am very fond of Elrond. A wise, talented elf, with attitude.

Setting the elves in California blended my love of California history (which I got from my mom) with the fantasy elements. I had originally set the novel in London (one of my favorite cities which I’ve visited five times). But that version of the tale---even though it was finished, wasn’t quite there.

And I figured everyone sees elves in England because of Tolkien… well, I needed to come up with something a little different. So a photo of The White Hotel set up high in the San Gabriel Mountains near Altadena, California (not far from Los Angeles) inspired me. (It’s no longer there. It burned down in the 1930s and was a stop on the Mount Lowe funicular.) I wanted a house with a view like that and then,  for some reason, immediately thought of elves….and the seed to the Elves of California was planted!

My contemporary novella was a little something noodling about my brain about seven years ago when I needed a roommate to help with the bills.

But I would like to write a novel set in London, the Regency or Victorian periods….but it would still probably involve elves! (I’m kind of stuck on them right now if you haven’t noticed!)  I actually have a NaNoWriMo manuscript that deals with elves in contemporary England that I may spruce up….

Alexis: I do see a theme here ;-) What has been the most memorable fan comment you've received?

Arabella: So far, the best one has to be one I got at the very beginning of my “career” as it were when I was about 13-14. My next door neighbor who was just a couple of years younger than me had to do a school report on her favorite author.

And I kid you not; she picked me! (Don’t remember what she got graded on that paper!)

Alexis: Speaking of the past, what was the first romance you ever read?

Arabella: Well—was it Jane Eyre when I was twelve or thirteen (never liked it too much—too dark.)

Perhaps it was Victoria Holt’s Mistress of Mellyn or The Bride of Pendorric. You see, my mom loved Victoria Holt, Phyllis Whitney and Mary Stewart…so I read those and whatever else was around the house, again, when I was pretty young. I was a precocious reader. (Heck, I read anything!)

The first Regency romance I remember reading was by Fiona Hill “Sweet’s Folly.” After that—I would read those Berkeley romances, the really short ones that they published in piles. And I was hooked.

Who doesn’t love a strong hero and a happily ever after! It fit right in with the kinds of things I have always liked.

Alexis: Those are the things I like too! Thank you so much for visiting Happily Ever After Thoughts, Arabella.

And remember, comment for a chance to win your choice of either I SWEAR MY ROOMMATE IS A VAMPIRE or THE ELF LORD’S REVENGE.

Another HAPPY BIRTHDAY for me!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!  Okay, so my birthday was a couple days ago, but I’m thinking I can make it last a week if I really try :-) Tonight I’m going out with friends to celebrate so I think today should count.

My week didn’t exactly start out on a happy note as I was in a car accident. Luckily, no broken bones and no long term injuries, so I guess that is a gift :-)

I love celebrating birthdays, mine or someone else’s. It means that we have lived another year. It gives us a chance to look back on the last year and think about what we have accomplished as well as think about our goals for next year.

This year for me has been a whirlwind because this is the year I went from an unpublished author to having two books out with Ellora’s Cave, one of which will be in print before 2013 ends (MASQUE), and a third book under contract and due out early next year. This allowed me to work with my very smart and thorough editor. I also had a great meeting with my awesome agent this year. Other highlights included spending time with my role model Jennifer Ashley/Allyson James at a conference in August along with two of my blogging buddies Marie Patrick and Kayce Lassiter. I also met new author friends and had fun with others from my Valley of the Sun writers group. Then in October I made a bunch of new friends at the Ellora’s Cave Romanticon. Wow, what a blast and what amazing people! I met tons of new authors like Karla, Andrea, Tina, Frances, Susana, and Cristal to name a few.

So how do I top this past year with this new year coming up in my life? Hmmm, well I do plan to go to Desert Dreams where I will see all my old writing friends from Arizona. I always love doing that. Then in May I will attend my first Romantic Times Convention. But first, and the best part of the year, I have convinced fellow romance writers to come visit me! Can’t wait to host Marie, Tina, Bev and Cathy in January, February and March.

Of course, I have lots of writing projects on my to-do list including an erotic romance novella that will start a series as well as a full length erotic romance that will start a different series.

This is why I love birthdays so much. They are like personal New Year’s, full of possibilities and excitement. When is your birthday? Are you excited?

Always, Lexi

It's November!

Oh my gosh! It’s November! And it seems that autumn has finally hit Arizona (it’s hard to tell in Phoenix. The leaves don’t change here….I do miss that….growing up in New Jersey, seeing the leaves change was the highlight of the season…but I digress).

This is my favorite time of year. I’m just curious how it got to be November without me noticing until just now. Yes, I changed my calendar on the first. Yes, I’ve noticed sunrise is a little later in the morning and sunset is a little earlier in the evening. I saw the trick-or-treaters for Halloween and I’ve noticed a definite chill in the air, especially in the mornings (believe me, I so look forward to this time of year, especially after the heat of the summer!).

Time just seems to have snuck up on me.  I have not made out my menu for Thanksgiving dinner or made out my shopping list. Those who know me are probably shocked by this admission as I usually have both tasks done in September and have already started purchasing items during my weekly shopping trip to the grocery store. Today is the 6th and I haven’t done that yet. I know!
Other than being a little behind in my tasks, this year is a little different for me as my son and his girlfriend will not be making the trip to join us. That’s all right. This is still my favorite time of year. I will bake and cook and clean. And, once again, I realize how much I have to be thankful for.
And I am a very fortunate woman! I have family and friends whom I adore. I have my health. I have a home that’s warm and comfortable. I have a job I love and I am able to write books that make me, and hopefully others, happy. Oh, and let’s not forget all the stories that I have yet to read.
What are some of the things you’ll be giving thanks for this Thanksgiving?
As always, happy reading and happy!
Marie

Interview of Jo Grafford and Giveaway

Alexis: Today we historical romance author, Jo Grafford who has a rafflecopter for for three gifts cards to Amazon.com or BarnesandNoble.com (winner’s choice) for $50, $25, and $15!

Welcome, Jo.What are you working on now?

Jo: Book Two of the Lost Colony Series, of course! This one will feature Jane Mannering, the huntress. An Amazon of a woman, she is fond of adventure and blunt honesty and is prone to striding around in her late father’s leather hat and boots. She can shoot as well as any man and is not above puffing an occasional pipe. Keep in mind that back in her day, the use of tobacco was believed to have medicinal value.

Alexis:Why did you choose this sub-genre of romance?

Jo: I passionately love everything about Elizabethan, Colonial and Native American history. It was as natural as breathing to write a novel within this sub-genre.

Alexis: What has been the most memorable fan comment you ever had?

Jo: Just received a text from a neighbor earlier today. “Oh my gosh, Jo. I have laundry to do and errands to run, but nothing’s getting done till I finishs Breaking Ties. I can’t put it down.” That’s the ultimate compliment – a reading experience that pulls you in so deep, that nothing else matters besides turning the page to see what happens next.

Alexis: I agree. Can you tell us your story of getting the call to be a writer?

Jo: I think I was born a writer. LOL Every writer out there knows what I’m talking about. Images of characters and scenes as well as entire conversations form in my head, and they don’t go away until I write them down. Sometimes these visions continue on my dreams, and voila! I awake with the concept of the next scene or chapter or book already developed. Believe me, it’s both a gift and a curse at times.

Alexis: What was your first writer’s conference?

Jo: The RT Booklovers Convention in Kansas City, MO in May, 2013. It’s a magical meeting place for both readers and writers. I still have stars dripping from my eyes over all the free and signed books I received - including a pre-release copy of Brandon Sanderson’s newest series. Topping the list, however, was the Pitch-A-Palooza Event where I was able to give three-minute pitches to real agents and editors. This turned into my first book contract several weeks later with Astraea Press. I highly recommend the RT Convention!

Alexis: Check out these excerpts from BREAKING TIES

PREFACE
Sometimes murder isn’t as messy, up-close, and personal as many people imagine it to be. Sometimes it is distant and impersonal – as simple as crossing a line through a name on a sheet of paper. Or one hundred and fifteen names in our case.

CHAPTER ONE
Portsmouth, England, April 26, 1587

“Yer bum’s hanging out the window!” My brother banged his empty mug on the inn table. He ran both hands through his hair, as red as my own, standing each flaming lock on end.
My lips turned up despite the heaviness in my chest. It felt good to hear him lapse into the Gaelic brogue of our childhood. “Och, Donnen!” I reached across the table to clasp his large hands and grimaced at the stench of salmon and sweat hanging in the air. “I dinna bring ye here to quarrel. ‘Tis my first job offer in weeks.”
I dared not share my other reason for leaving.
“Nay, ye can stay with me till ye find a different job. Crossing the Atlantic unwed is bad enough, but these—” He shook my upraised palms, “are ink stains. Blast it all! Ye’re a clerk, not a sailor.”
“Indeed?” Saints alive, he acted as if I was still twelve instead of nineteen. “Well, good news. I shall be accompanied by other women – whole families of people, for that matter – and ‘tis a clerk they need.”
“Only because—“ Donnen glanced around the room and lowered his voice. “The last one left in a frightful hurry along with half the crew all in the same night.” His glare was fierce. “Rumor has it the entire fleet is bound straight for Jonah’s watery vault. I don’t suppose that came up during the bloomin’ interview?”

CHAPTER THIRTEEN
"You want my help." 'Twas an accusation.
     "Aye."
His eyes darkened. "I save your life. I give gifts. I offer marriage." He closed the remaining distance between us, his eyes burning into mine.
     I stumbled back.
"You give nothing in return," he snarled. "You only ask for more."
"I would had I something to offer," I whispered. "But I have nothing. I am nothing."
"Then what use are you to me?" He wheeled away.
I sagged against the door, eyes stinging. I blinked rapidly and pressed a hand to my stomach. Nausea rolled at the thought of informing the others of my failure.
Manteo circled the cabin like a hawk stalking its prey. 'Twas a fine room with ornately carved shelves lining one wall. Bunks were built into the next wall. A generous desk jutted from the third, overflowing with maps and navigational devices. I recognized the compass and hourglass but could not identify the other instruments. I jerked in surprise when Manteo swooped down upon me.
"I know our location." His arms shot out and slapped the wall on either side of me, hemming me to the door. "I could swim ashore from here."
"Then why do ye stay if ye can leave and save yourself?"
"Governor White gave his word to deliver me home."
"We are going to starve, Manteo. 'Tis only a matter of days now."
"Nay. You alone starve. The others eat."
     "I have no appetite."
"You act as one already dead."
I straightened my back. "I accept what I cannot change."
"And I change what I cannot accept." He shifted his weight to the wall, one arm propped over my head. He drew his fingertips down the side of my face in a feather-light caress.
I closed my eyes against the rush of unbearable sweetness. He made me long for things forbidden. "'Tis within your power to help us. I am begging you."
     "Very well."
My eyes flew open. "Ye will do this for us."
"For you." His voice was silken, his features as hard as granite.
I smiled tremulously. "I thank thee, Manteo. Chief Manteo, that is." The new title felt strange on my lips. I beheld him with a mixture of awe and pride.
"I have yet to name my price."
     I stared, confused.
He grunted in disgust. "You refuse me as both husband and lover, so you are left with the hiring of my services."
I worried my lower lip between my teeth. At least he was willing to negotiate. His eyes flashed with lust as he followed my movements.
"I will entreat the Dares for payment."
"Nay. You are the one in my debt."
I raised and dropped my hands helplessly.
"You serve this company, no? You can serve my people, too."
"Ye would hire me as clerk?" Hope leaped in my chest at the possibilities. I would not have to part from him so soon.
"My people have no clerks." His eyes narrowed. "We have slaves."
My breath hitched. "Ye wish to punish me, humiliate me?"
"Nay, I only wish to marry you."
I briefly closed my eyes against the pain. He already knew the reason for my refusal.
     "Rose."
"Say no more. I will do it. 'Twill be punishment enough to see you so often and—“ I clamped my lips.
Exultation flickered briefly across his face. "You would give up your freedom to save your friends?"
     "Without question."
     "Swear it," he said grimly.
     "I swear it."
His eyes flared with emotion. He bent slowly 'til his breath stirred my lips. My eyelids fluttered closed. Heaven help me, for I had no will left to resist him.
"Now you will eat," Manteo commanded hoarsely. He stepped back, surveying me from head to feet.
     "Eat?"
"I have no slaves so thin and weak. Go. Collect your rations." He turned from me and bent to pore over a map on the table.
I reached for the door handle, disbelieving at the curt dismissal.
"And send for Anthony. I have need of him."
I glared at his back. Faith, should I press my face to the floor as well? "Aye, master." I bit the words out and fled.
