Mom Sayings

My ears have been ringing. My mother used to say that meant someone was talking about me (I can only hope it was good stuff). She also used to say that a goose was walking on your grave when you got a shiver up your spine. Never knew where this one came from but I thought it was silly. Why would a goose be walking over my grave?
There were a lot of things my mother said (heck, that all mothers said….you know them as well as I do (sound familiar?):
  • Do as I say, not as I do.
  • Do you think I'm made of money?
  • Don't cross your eyes or they'll freeze that way.
  • Am I talking to a brick wall?
  • Don’t roll your eyes at me!
  • Shut the door! I'm not heating (air conditioning) the entire neighborhood!
And so many more….
My mother’s personal favorites: Don’t look at me with that tone of face. I heard that one A LOT! I never knew I had a tone of face, but apparently, I do because my DH calls me on it, too. I was a good kid….I just wasn’t perfect and if there was a way for me to find trouble…well, you know, I did. Of course, my younger brother and sister helped me find that trouble. I didn’t always do it by myself!
Don’t borrow trouble was another one (*sigh* I say this one all the time) and Because I’m your mother and I said so! I heard that one a lot, too….it was her “go-to” phrase whenever she’d become exasperated with me and I admit, after a particularly frustrating conversation with my son, I said it, although I swore I never would. Wonder of wonders, though, it worked!
Why am I telling you all this? Well, one, I’ve been thinking about my mother a lot lately. Her birthday is next month although she’s no longer here to celebrate it and two, I was writing a scene that involved two six year olds engaged in a game of tag and the mother of one yelled (from the kitchen) “No running in the house”, which was another thing my mother said all the time. It just cracked me up…and yes, I sat here and giggled for a minute or two!
What were some of your mother’s favorite sayings? Are there any that are unique?

As always, happy reading!
Marie
