PASSION OF SLEEPY HOLLOW by Lexi Post and a Mask Giveaway!

Passion of Sleepy Hollow by Lexi Post

Recluse Braeden Van Brunt is not happy to be the Headless Horseman…until he meets Katrina Van Tassel, owner of the Sleepy Hollow Inn, whose allure bewitches him from the front desk into the bedroom. When he discovers Kat and the village of Sleepy Hollow are cursed to exist only in the present day for one weekend a year, he realizes the sacrifice he must make if he wants to keep her.

Katrina Van Tassel lives between slivers of time. She thought she was through grieving her betrothed’s death, but her dreams flare to life when his mirror-image arrives requesting a room. Drawn to Braeden, she is taken to greater heights of intimacy than she ever imagined, but she can’t be sure if her heart is with him or with the love from her past.

Knowing he must conquer both time and ghosts to keep the only woman he’s ever loved, Braeden must put the past to rest. But the dead won’t rest in Sleepy Hollow.

Excerpt:
Kat closed the door to her room and leaned against it. Her heart raced so fast it could beat a squirrel up a tree. Licking her lips, she closed her eyes. Braeden’s kiss brought back all those wonderful feelings she used to have with Brom. The ones where her toes curled inside her buckle shoes and her body quivered.
She crossed her arms over her stomach. She hadn’t had those with anyone else since. Not even slightly. What was she going to do? She’d been desperate to get away, and now he would be staying the night. She opened her eyes. Staying in her room. Oh, Lord.
Moving to her chest at the end of the bed, she pulled out a pillow and threw it on the floor. She’d already changed the sheets because he was supposed to leave. It had been so hard not to bury her face in his unique scent. It reminded her of the forest after a rainstorm, musky, comforting, making her want to snuggle in for a winter hibernation.
Ugh, what was she thinking? He was Stephen’s brother, a Newtimer, and he would leave tomorrow.
Oh no. The village would be long gone by then. What would happen to Braeden then? She glanced toward the door, listening to the floorboards creak under his weight. Quickly, she pulled her quilt from the chest and grabbed the pillow.
    Too late.
The door opened and he ducked inside, obliterating the opening from her sight. He stood stock-still, studying her once again. The lantern light softened his features, proving how different he really appeared from Brom.
Straightening her shoulders, she stepped toward him. “Your room is all set. I’ll just make my bed in the parlor.”
He didn’t move, and she couldn’t go through the door unless he did.
“Braeden? You need to step aside for me to leave.”
“And what if I don’t want you to leave?”
Her breath caught in her throat as tingling sped from her head to her toes. She swallowed hard. “What do you mean?” She turned away to give herself a moment without looking at his handsome visage. “Did I forget something?”
The floor creaked behind her and she stepped forward to inspect the water pitcher. If he touched her again, she’d be lost. She turned to review the bed. “I assure you these are clean sheets.”
    The door closed.
She spun and the quilt knocked the pitcher off the table onto the floor with a crash. “Oh no.” She knelt, suddenly wanting to cry, though the pitcher wasn’t anything special. In fact, it had a crack along the handle and was bound to break soon anyway.
“Come. It’s okay.” Braeden’s hands on her arms helped her to stand and sent fire through her already taut nerves.
Gently, he enveloped her in his arms. Her heart slowed as a feeling of rightness settled through her. With her face against his chest, she could hear his strong heartbeat.
“Kat.” The soft-spoken word came from deep within him and she met his gaze. “Don’t be mad at me.”
The loneliness she glimpsed in his eyes undid her. Before she could think about what she did, she hooked her hand around his neck and pulled him forward for a kiss.

Triptych by Karin Slaughter

Serial murders in Atlanta are something new, but the fact that the victims are prostitutes and low in social ranking typically are not high on the police radar.

This changes idea with Officer Angie Polaski.  Angie is a beautiful and tough cop and considers the atrocities done on the victims inexcusable.

Another officer, Mike Ormewood, doesn’t see the problem as one needing high priority.  He has other problems of his own.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation sends their man, Agent Will Trent.  Trent has a steady and hidden personality, a tough nut for Angie to crack.Product Details

In walks the next most important person, Jon Shelley, in the solving of the murders.  Actually, he walks out of the state prison after paying his dues for a murder.

Jon develops a crush on Angie, Mike hates Jon, Trent has a conflict with Mike’s personality, and Angie’s curiosity about Trent leads to a deep interest.

What a dilemma.  It’s nearly as much a mystery to solve the murders as it is who will end up dating who.

I loved this story.  It had a unique development of the plot and the characters mixed in turbulence similar to a blender.  The only thing I didn’t like was the title of the story.  Triptych?  I looked up the title and found it to define an artistic picture split into three frames.  I seriously did not want to think hard and figure the meaning and how it related to the story other than a character having a triptych on their wall, which ultimately was mentioned once and had little to do with the novel.  Choosing this story had only to do with the fact that the author has always given me a great read!

Happy reading,

Dawn

DANCE OR DIE by Liz O'Connor

Why does Steel remember matters differently than what actually occurred?

The brain is actually a terrible recorder of past events. Especially events that a person recalls frequently. For example, if the person, let us say Steel, had withheld information from his college and the students accompanying him to the Middle East to excavate what might be the first major agricultural sites of mankind, it is possible upon recollection, he would forget the withheld information entirely. In his mind, that never happened. Upon further recollection of the horrifying events that occurred, he would alter more facts each time he recalls the situation. The two young women who were raped by insurgents who entered their camp, were no longer raped. They were just spoiled, angry young women who ignored him when he told them to go to the house, rather than stay in the car.

Being a traumatic event he’ll recall it often and each time he’ll change details, each time softening his guilt and pushing the blame to others.

In a way, this altering of memories can make traumatic events tolerable. But it can also result in a person who never takes responsibility for his own actions and thus he repeats the same mistakes again. Nor is he consciously aware of what he is doing.

This really happens. Researchers have proven this over and over. It’s why past memories can be so easily manipulated by suggestions from a psychiatrist. But what most people don’t realize is that everyone changes their memories every time they recall an event in their past. It might remain mostly true or it might not be even recognized as the same event by others who witnessed the original event.

True story: When at college my roomie and I joked about kidnapping a cute friend of ours. We laughingly plotted out the various ways we could go about it. There was another participant to our conversation, Kim, and this event, plotting to kidnap Steve, altered in her memories and became a real abduction that impacted the rest of her life. We reconnected through facebook many years later and she brought up the time when we kidnapped cute Steve and she shared how much that impacted her life (negatively).
I had no idea what she was talking about. Neither did my former roomie. So I contacted Steve on facebook and asked him if recalled us ever kidnapping him.

“No, but sounds like fun,” was his response. So I contacted Kim and gave her the goods news. We never kidnapped Steve, and she could lose the guilt. That resulted in a great deal of anger and a defriending.  Evidently, this trauma had become the cornerstone of her life and she was NOT giving it up.

So don’t linger on negative events in your past. If you do, they will begin to consume you.  However, when you make a mistake, derive what you can from the lesson, and then move on. Revisiting it over and over can worsen matters.

Contemporary Suspense/Romance

Blurb
Tess Campbell, mafia princess, has fallen in love with a British prince, who is protected by a Secret Service agent during his stay in America. Two weeks into their budding romance, Tess’s father, a psycho mafia don, kidnaps and nearly kills the prince and his Secret Service agent, believing she has taken both as her lovers. The brutal assault reveals the true character of each man and Tess must face some hard truths, even as she takes control of her destiny to build the finest state park in the country.

Excerpt for Dance or Die
“Are you talking about the helicopter incident in the Middle-East?” Tess asked.
“That’s an excellent example. The CIA and the British Intelligence had warned Steel that the area was rife with insurgents and to attempt entry would be suicidal—advice that he kept from the school and the kids traveling with him.
“Three weeks into their trip, their campsite was raided. The insurgents tied up the men and made them watch as they gang-raped the two women. Then they gathered up all the gear, food, and water and left them there to die.”
Tess was shocked. This was nothing like the story that Steel had told her.
“Their driver returned in the morning and found the men bound and the women unconscious. Steel called the American embassy on the man’s phone and demanded they send him new equipment and better protection at once. They told him he was in a war zone and to get out. Steel told them to fuck off and hung up.”
“Dear God!”
“Fortunately, his students had no intention of staying and called the American Embassy back, begging for rescue. So the driver was given firm orders upon where to take them to await pickup. Steel was furious when he’d learned what they’d done and he promised to ruin all their careers if they didn’t stay. They all believed being alive was more important than staying to work on his site. Given Steel had no food, water, shelter or equipment, he went along as well, condemning his students the entire drive there.”
Steel had made it seem like he was the victim and that the deaths were other people’s fault, which was exactly what he was doing now as well.
“The driver warned everyone to the house, but the girls were in too much pain to be removed from the jeep. So the men ignored the driver and hung around the jeep.”
“Which made it a target for the enemy helicopter,” Tess said.
“Yes. The jeep blew up, killing the girls instantly. The young men ignored Steel who was yelling to hide behind a small fence. Two ran to the house and the other two ran for the hills. They survived. Amazingly, Steel did as well. They found him hiding against the fence with the driver’s body protecting him.”
“That is nothing like Steel’s version.”
“Well, that’s the four students’ version and why Steel was fired at once. And the reason he was fired from his most recent position was because, once again, he withheld the warnings he’d received from the CIA, but this time, they called the head of the university and relayed what had happened the last time Steel took students into a war zone. They fired him and the woman who was responsible for ensuring all university travel locations were properly cleared. He’d evidently convinced her he knew better than the CIA.”

Excerpt…Witch’s Pass By Kayce Lassiter

As a princess from a very powerful family, it wasn’t outside the realm of possibility that a coven of witches had kidnapped her and had stirred up an electrical storm to impede the search and cover their trail.
While Alex didn’t think that was the case, it would be impossible for a single witch to bring down an electrical storm, so the timing of a magical storm forced him to consider the possibility this wasn’t what it appeared.
He was determined to follow the trail as long as he could, and keep an eye out for a place to wait out the storm, just in case.
In less than five minutes, the storm raged so badly he could no longer ignore it.  Trees were whipped around by the high winds, and the thunder was so loud he could sense the rumble under his feet.
Alex began to look around in earnest for a place to ride it out.  He considered shifting back, but decided with all the debris being tossed around, it was safer in his “rubber skin”, as the team called it.
While Alex’s skin never hardened to the marble finish other gargoyles experienced, his pliable skin was still tough and couldn’t be cut, punctured, shot, or penetrated by any weapon he’d ever encountered.  So he was still better protected as a gargoyle than as a human.  And the advantage he had over other gargoyles is that in a pliable form, he could still move, while they were rooted to one spot.
As he searched for a cave, or a rock outcropping where he could lay low and avoid lightning strikes, he caught movement from the corner of his eye and whipped his head back to see what it was.
At first, he thought there was nothing there.  But after a few seconds, he noticed a slight movement in his peripheral vision.  When he turned his head to look at the area straight on, it was almost like the air had a translucent finish as it shimmered in the wind.  As he stared, trying to figure out what to do about it, there was a blinding flash of light that forced him to look away momentarily.
When he looked back, the spot was gone.  Instead, there was a woman on the ground who sputtered as she cursed like a sailor, arms and legs flailing as she screamed at the top of her lungs.
Alex was still in his shifted form, and blended into the background, so she hadn’t noticed him.
“Son-of-a-bitch!  You stupid stink weed.”  The woman flailed her arms and legs like a turtle stuck on its back as she fought to stand with a massively heavy pack on her back.
He shifted back to his human form so he had all of his senses, and smiled as he recognized the stunning young woman.
Quayk SpellMaker.
She still hadn’t noticed him, as she continued to issue threats and curse at whatever had pissed her off.
“I will get even with you, so help me, I swear I will.  I’ll set you on fire and I’ll take the hedge trimmers to you, and I’ll…I’ll set you on fire again.”
She finally managed to get her pack off her shoulders and bolted to her feet.  Her cowgirl hat flew off her head and she caught it neatly with one hand as she pulled twigs and leaves from her tangled black hair with the other, still cursing and stomping her feet.
When she finally looked up and saw Alex, she froze.
He smiled.  “Miss SpellMaker, I presume.”
“Who the hell are you?”  She reached for her pack, clearly reluctant to leave it behind.
Alex took a slow step closer, approaching her like he would a scared colt.
Her gaze was wild and she was poised to run, but she wasn’t scared.  She was determined not to be caught.  He could read it in her eyes.
She was the most magnificent woman he’d ever seen.  Her huge ice-blue eyes flashed fire and her thick black hair was wild around her face as she stood in shorts and pink cowgirl boots, with long tanned legs, and her hat in hand.
It was like a punch to the gut, and he swallowed hard to ease the lump in his throat.
This woman is my target.  Her father is my client, not to mention she’s a princess and he’s the freaking King of SpellMaker.
Quayk shifted slightly to get a better hold on her pack.
“Now, Miss SpellMaker, I am not here to hurt you.  But I won’t let you run.  Your family hired me to find you, and I intend to take you home.  So please—don’t try to run.  You’ll jus—.”
She bolted, abandoning the pack in favor of freedom.
“Shit!”  Alex took off after her, shocked at how fast the woman could move.  As she slipped through the forest easily, he was forced to crash through like a bull in a china shop.
As they ran, the storm picked up strength.  The trees were bent almost to the ground and limbs crashed down around them as Quayk continued to put more and more distance between them.
Alex tried to call to her, to warn her this was a magical storm, and extremely dangerous.  He doubted she could hear him.
Suddenly and ear-splitting crack sounded and he watched as a tree began to fall toward Quayk as she bolted through the forest, unaware.
He screamed, “Quayk, look out!”
She must have heard him because she looked back over her shoulder.  Her eyes grew round and she tried to outrun the tree, but he watched as the canopy of the huge pine engulfed her slender body.
Alex hurried toward where he’d last seen her.  He half crawled and half ran, as he scrambled over and through branches to reach her.
Finally, he saw a flash of pink beneath the tree, and he made his way over to the woman as she lay face-down beneath a branch.
When he finally managed to reach Quayk, the first thing he did was check for a pulse.  Strong.  He looked around and didn’t see any blood.
Maybe she just got knocked out.
He pulled a knife from his belt and began to cut branches to free the girl, as lightning flashed close enough to make the hair on his body stand out.
“Shit.”  He talked as he worked to free her.  “Quayk, come on, you have to wake up.  We have to get you out of here.  This storm is dangerous.  Come on, girl, talk to me.  Wake up.”
She groaned.
With the last branch pulled away, he was still afraid to move her, unsure what he would find when he turned her over.
He leaned close.  “Quayk, can you hear me?  Are you hurt?  Can you move?”
“No,” she mumbled with her face still pushed into the ground.
“No what?”  He asked.  “No, you’re not hurt, or no, you can’t move?”
He heard her drag in a ragged breath.  “No, I don’t want to move.  Go away.”
“All right, that’s enough.”  Anger and relief warred inside him—anger at how close she’d come to being killed, and relief that she hadn’t.  He took her snarky response as an indication she was okay.
Standing, he reached down and grabbed her by the waist and hoisted her up until she could get her feet under her.
She grunted, but didn’t scream out in pain.  So as soon as she was able to stand, he bent over and swooped her over his shoulder like a sack of potatoes.
She screamed, but he sensed no pain in the scream, so he started off in search of a place to hide from the storm as she began to kick and buck on his shoulder.
“Put me down, you Neanderthal.  I am not going home.  I’m fine.”
He reached up with his free hand and paddled her on the butt.  “Hold still or I’ll tie you up with a vine and leave you out here to drown in this storm.”
She stopped fighting.  “You’re crazy.  It’s not even raining.”
“It will be.  This storm isn’t natural.  It’s magical, and seems set on killing both of us.”
With that, another bolt of lightning struck the ground at the far side of the clearing.  Quayk screamed loud enough to blow out an eardrum, and Alex crashed through the bushes in the opposite direction as he tried to hold onto the bucking woman on his shoulder.
“Hold still!”  She was getting heavier, and harder to hold onto.
“Cave,” she shrieked.
He froze.  “What?”
She pointed off to the right and screamed again, “Cave.”
He looked in the direction she pointed as a branch crashed down behind him.  “There’s a cave over there?”

“Yes, you idiot.  Get moving or put me down before you kill both of us.”  She bucked again, but he held tight.

Old, But Still Cherished

It’s a beautiful morning here in Arizona. It’s Monday, Labor Day, although by the time you see this, gentle reader, it will be Wednesday (you know me, I like to be prepared) but I digress. Considering that this is a National holiday and I don’t have to be at the day job, I took advantage of it (I did all my Sunday chores yesterday so the day is MINE!). I slept in….well, I slept until 6, which for me really is sleeping in and I plan on doing some fun stuff today (I plan to write but that’s fun for me…I’m on the downhill slide with my latest WIP and the words seem to be coming fast and furious….I LOVE that).
Where was I? Oh. Monday. Holiday. No day job. Right.
I’m making a big batch of chili today because well, it is September and I do love chili (it freezes wonderfully) so as I was stirring the contents of my crock pot, I realized, Oh my gosh! This crock pot is thirty-six years old (yes, I actually said this out loud to myself….and the dog, who waited patiently for me to drop something). It was a wedding gift from my grandmother those many years ago (thanks, Gramma!) It's not your traditional crock pot, but rather a hot plate with removable pot that you can also use on the stove but I love it. Still works great and I use it all the time.
And that comment got me to thinking (because my brain is a very strange and odd place…what else would one expect from a writer?) what else do I have in this house that’s old (we’re not including me….yes, I’m old and this body of mine still works great…for the most part…I’m still coming to terms with my limitations but we’re not going to talk about that).
Well, there’s a calf-length winter coat hanging in my closet that I haven’t worn since I left New Jersey in 1983 (this is Phoenix, after all…and I never seem to get cold enough to put it on). Should I get rid of it? Probably, but won’t. There’s a small round table with scalloped edges that was in my grandparent’s apartment for as long as I can remember and now supports a fake plant in my guest room.  Oh, and I can’t forget my Corning Menuette set that I bought when I was sixteen to put in my hope chest (yes, it’s traditional Corning….white with the blue design…still use that…and still have the hope chest, too).
What else? Books! Yes, I have books that I purchased way back when I was fourteen. Some are so well loved, they are held together with tape. Some are missing covers and there are a few that have lost a page here and there but these books have been packed up and moved too many times to count (and once from New Jersey to Arizona!), but I just hated the idea of leaving them behind. These stories have been my companions when I was lonely and my refuge when the world becomes too much, you know? Get rid of them? Perish the thought!
So what do you have around the house that’s old (like me) but still well loved and still functioning just like new (or gently used)?

As always, happy reading!

Welcome to Eden by Erin and a Giveaway

WELCOME TO EDEN

Hello. We are so pleased you could join us as there are so few women on this planet and even fewer outside the cities where we live, we being myself, Serena and Jaelene. Serena's friend, Toni, lives in Naralina, the closest city.

I just wanted to give you some information to help you acclimate to either Haven or Loraleaf (though to be honest, I haven't been to Loraleaf yet).

First, this is a naked planet, so everyone expects you to walk around nude. I've been here for two years now and I still don't have the guts to do it, but Jaelene has started to, at least in her own home. The Edenists, however, who are all men, have no problem with it, and I have to say it makes for a lot of eye-candy. These guys are built!

Second, every woman takes at least two husbands. This is amazing because the Edenists truly treasure us. Talk about being spoiled! Not that these guys don't make a mistake on occasion, sometimes a big one (speaking from experience), but they are nearly perfect.

Third, each of these Edenists is born into a family but his Kindred is revealed by his birthmark. He doesn't know exactly what ability he has until he reaches "the change" (puberty). For example, one of my beloved is Wareson. He is of the Kindred of Air and his ability is that he can push air, so when needed, he can knock down twenty men at once! Or he can be very gentle ;-)

Fourth, the reason you are here is because a filoz chose you after watching you for months or even years (in my case it was years). A filoz is a group of men who are close friends and want to share a woman. You are now considered a finacé. No, you have no choice about that, but you do have a choice on whether to marry into the filoz. If you do, you will be considered an agapayto (spouse) or beloved (which is exactly what you will be ;-)

Lastly, you should know that the weather here is wonderful, like a Caribbean island. Also, the days are shorter than on Earth and there are two moons (Selene and Bendis). The civilization was created by The Crius (aliens) who took people from ancient Earth and settled them here. They haven't evolved in the same way Earth civilizations have and in some ways are very basic, but in other ways are very advanced.

If there is anything I can do to help you acclimate, please ask. I'm still in the process of putting together an orientation to "Eden Life" as I'm calling it, so it would be good to know what questions you might have. Please ask me now if you like. I understand you may receive something for your curiosity :-)

I'm so happy you have arrived and I do hope you stay. I can't wait for us to have a girls night out. Sometimes the testosterone levels around here can be a bit overpowering ;-) But I can promise you that happiness can definitely be found here.

Sincerely, Erin
