Two Hears' Christmas Wish by Tamara Ferguson

Getting to know the hero of the story, Jason Matthews, is an intense and fiery flight.  Jason is an Air Force captain, in the midst of gunfire as he and others of his squadron fight for the USA and for their own lives.

An emotional and touching scene of Jason as he gives ardently and physically to save his men can do nothing but encourage the reader to adore him and feel pride for our service people.

As Jason heals from the airplane fire, he sleeps and dreams of a former crush he had on Kat while they were teens.

I think the backstory was a nice informative piece, but lasted way too long explaining a teenage crush between Jason, who was too old legally for her, Kat, his junior. For a young adult book- fine, but this is intended for adults.

After the lengthy backstory, we get into the meat of the romance when Jason realizes his life is lonely and he can’t quit thinking about the girl from fourteen years prior, Kat.

The rest of the story is heartfelt between the two adults along with charitable hearts towards others and animals.  Can’t not like that!

So, I’d recommend reading Two Hearts’ Christmas Wish.  Drop the backstory, and the rest of the tale is spot on for a wounded warrior romance!

Happy reading,

Dawn

The Highlander's Hope

First, I want to wish you a peaceful and blessed season. I am a Christmas girl. So, a very Merry Christmas as well. It's nearly a winter wonderland here in Wisconsin. Just need a few more inches of snow. I've already shoveled twice and there is more snow to come. Perfect. Right now, I'm happy to keep shoveling. Talk to me in February and I will be of a different mind.

Tis the season to stay in the warm indoors and read, which I'm happy to oblige as well. I'm currently reading The Highlander's Hope. The first chapter had me hooked. I've never read Cali Mackay books before, and so far I'm pleased. Check it out and see if it's your cup of tea or coffee.

The Highlander's Hope

Dr. Catriona Ross is well on her way to finding the lost highland treasure she’s been hunting. The only thing standing in her way is the infuriatingly sexy, smart and stubborn Iain MacCraigh—otherwise known as Scotland’s most eligible bachelor.

Iain can't believe his luck when he finds out the jewels are hidden away somewhere on his land-- and it doesn't hurt that the historian looking for them has curves to go with her smarts. With his brother betting the family fortune, this is the life line he desperately needs.

The odds are against them, and with word getting out about the jewels, they're not the only ones on the hunt. Time's running out, but can they learn to trust each other, or will they lose the jewels and true love in the process?

Again, have a Merry Christmas. I'll see you in 2018. I already know it's going to be a great year!

Just to give you a little bit of a taste of Garland Creek Cowboy, here's an excerpt.  Enjoy!

Excerpt...Garland Creek Cowboy

The band started into a two-step, and he spun her slowly onto the floor. She looked terrified—a look he’d never seen on her before. He suspected it had nothing to do with dancing, but he took care to go slow and put her at ease as he two-stepped her around the floor.

After a few steps, he felt her relax in his arms. “I’m going to turn you.”

She tensed, but didn’t object as he spun her into a slow, smooth rotation. Before they’d even made a full rotation around the floor, she was moving like she had back in high school. So, he stepped it up, sending her into two and three spins at a time. By the end of the song, she was laughing and having fun with it. So was he.

His throat tightened as the old feelings stole over him. Would he ever be able to dance with this woman without wanting her?

The band didn’t stop between songs, but moved from the first two-step straight into another, calling for everyone to grab a partner and make their way onto the dance floor.  Within moments, the floor was filled with two-steppers, ranging from beginners to experts.

Melayna seemed to relax even more when she was surrounded by dancers, and she really started to get into it, swishing her skirt, and kicking. She was bold and beautiful, and he couldn’t take his eyes off her as he moved in time with her, making sure he never missed a beat or a catch.

When the band moved from the second two-step into a slow song, Devin didn’t ask. He just pulled her into his arms. She snuggled in like they’d never missed a dance in fifteen years, but he suspected it was just instinct. Because a couple of steps in, he felt her tense in his arms.

She made a feeble attempt to put distance between them. He budged slightly to let her know she wasn’t trapped, but didn’t give her a whole lot of free rein. Fortunately, she didn’t balk, and stayed where she was. By the end of the dance, she had relaxed into his arms again.

He tried to just savor the moment, and not think about what-ifs or woulda-coulda-shouldas. He allowed himself the luxury of just being in the moment with the girl he’d loved for more than half his life.

When the song ended, he loosened his hold reluctantly, staring down into her face as she tilted her chin up to smile at him.

A rush of desire slammed into him so hard he clenched his jaw to maintain control over his body and keep from doing something stupid. It would be so easy to just lower his head and kiss her right now.

She hadn’t pulled away yet.

He was trapped in the depth of her dark eyes, like helpless prey caught in a snare.

She tipped her head to the side. “Thank you, Devin. You were right. I enjoyed it tremendously.”

His brain screamed, “Kiss her,” even as she stepped out of his embrace.

Too late. I should have.

He kicked himself. He may just have made the most fatal mistake of his life. He almost reached for her again, but she turned away before he could make his arms move.

He watched her walk away.

Maybe it’s better this way.

He had no intention of ever leaving Garland Creek, and she’d made it perfectly clear fifteen years ago that she had no desire to stay in Garland Creek.  He wished things could be different.

She’d always been the girl of his dreams, except for the one little detail fate had thrown between them—she wanted to wander, to see the world with no ties, and he needed the ties that bound him to his roots.

* * *

As Melayna danced with Devin, she was reminded of how wonderful they had been together back in high school. He’d always been so easy to follow, each of them always knowing exactly what the other was going to do next.  Never any surprises or embarrassing moments, always perfect and fun.

For a moment, she managed to forget she’d fled town like her ass was on fire, that she’d been filled with the fear he would squelch her dream. She’d always known he would never intentionally do it, but her love for him had been so all-consuming and overwhelming that she hadn’t managed it well.

She’d been unable to stand her ground and make sure he knew what she wanted. She’d told him, but hadn’t had the confidence to make it a non-negotiable item.

She now realized her youth and inexperience had driven her to turn it into a deal-breaker. She’d chosen for Devin, never giving him a chance to decide for himself. She wondered now what direction he would have taken.

Given the chance to do it all over again, what would I choose today?
is
Devin had a daughter now, as well as full responsibility for the family ranch and for the Founders Association. His roots had done nothing but strengthen and deepen, while hers had run wide and shallow. She wondered if he would even consider being with a woman who was always gone to one livestock event or another.

Pain clutched her heart and squeezed as she realized he now had a family. He should be looking for a mother for Parker, not another woman who would flee overseas, leaving her family behind at home.

Another chance was something she had no right to even ask for if she wasn’t willing to make some changes in her own life.

Am I?

She didn’t know the answer. Her breath hitched in her chest at the thought that she might actually have to walk away from Devin for a second time. Did she have the strength to do it twice?

Another option to purchase this story--if you love box sets--is with the Butterscotch Martini Girls Christmas in Garland Creek set.

Wishing you all a Very Merry Christmas.  Stay fun, stay happy, stay SAFE!

Happy Holidays!

          Hello, gentle readers! Happy holidays!
It’s Tuesday. Yes, I know I’m late….I usually write my blog on Sunday because I like to be prepared…I was a Girl Scout for several years so I learned that lesson really well.
It’s a beautiful day in my little corner of Arizona! Even so, I will admit that I cried today. Oh, not because I’m sad or hurt or angry (yes, I cry when I’m angry), but because today, I spent a good deal of time chopping onions!
For those of you who’ve read my little blog before, you know that several times a year, I make a big batch of spaghetti sauce (with meatballs and sausage) and today’s the day, hence the onions and the tears. I’ve also peeled and crushed six cloves of garlic….did you know you can burn your fingers with garlic juice?
But it’s all good!
What else have I been up to since I last wrote to you? Well, I finished my last work in progress and sent it off to my publisher and I’ve started a new story. Actually, I’ve started four (well, one I started a while ago but picked back up). Why four? I find I’m having a hard time settling on one to finish. My options are two different westerns, a sequel to something I’ve already written or another Civil War story. My problem seems to stem from the fact that while I’m working on something and trying hard to finish, my characters from other stories talk to me…constantly. Now that I’ve finished the last story in the MacDermott Brothers trilogy, the other characters in my head have suddenly gone silent. What’s up with that? I couldn’t get them to stop talking before and now, they don’t want to talk with me at all? Hmmm. Not sure what I need to do to get them to start talking to me again, but I’ll be working on it. In the meantime, I need to go stir the sauce.
Have a wonderful holiday, gentle readers. I wish you peace and joy and most of all, happy reading!

Until next time, remember to spread kindness wherever you go.

As You Were, Cowboy

Excerpt of As You Were Cowboy by Heather Long:

Anger filled Mateo Lopez like hot shrapnel bursting with every word the gorgeous blonde issued in her cultured British accent. White-hot lances of pain radiated along his spine. All he’d done was move a few damn bales of hay, and it had left him sweating and gasping for breath. Accepting his limitations and giving in to weakness were not in his wheelhouse, although he’d elected to make the walk to his truck for the prescription the doctor insisted he fill. If he could avoid taking the pain pills he would. Now her.

“I beg your pardon,” she said, and he could practically feel the stiffness of her tone, as though a riding crop were delivering a fresh welt of pain across his back. “Mr. Wilks?”

“I’m not Tanner,” Mateo admitted. As grating as her pronouncement had been, his mother would tear a strip off his hide if he didn’t dispel the misunderstanding. “I’m Mateo Lopez, ranch manager.” Technically, he was the assistant ranch manager to his father. They split the ranch tasks between them. “I handle the trainers as well.”

He was the trainer.

The horses were his.

This . . . woman was not going to just walk in and take over like she owned the place.

“Please accept my apologies, Mr. Lopez. I thought you were Mr. Wilks.” Unease left her manner stilted, and a tiny frown line appeared between her cornflower-blue eyes, which gleamed with intensity even in the barn’s shade. Sugar nickered again and stomped her feet, disturbed by their nearness and likely offended by the lack of attention. The filly was lovely, and a diva in her awareness of it.

With a light cough to clear her throat, she recaptured his attention and continued, “If you could point me in Tanner’s direction, then I’ll excuse myself.”

“I have no problems excusing you, but the ranch is private property and, as I already stated, I oversee all the horses here. We don’t need a new trainer.” It went against the grain on every level. A spasm worked its way along his spine, and he gritted his teeth. Yes, Tanner had mentioned the potential plan—keyword potential. He hadn’t mentioned actually hiring anyone. Mateo attributed it to keeping the Colonel focused on his recovery. That was why, right?

“Mr. Lopez, I’m not sure what I’ve done to offend you, but my contract is with Mr. Wilks.” The stress of the word contract couldn’t be missed, nor could the way her chin lifted and her shoulders went back. Even her nose seemed a little higher, as though she physically held herself back from fighting with him.

“Lady, I don’t know what you think is going to happen, but no trainers touch these horses without my approval.” The horses were everything to him. There was no way Tanner was going to usurp his work to bring a Brit.

“I know exactly what is going to happen. I left a very lucrative and successful training program in Stafford to travel several thousand miles to make a dream come true. I apologize if I’ve offended you, but until Mr. Wilks decides to buy out my contract, I’m not going anywhere.” Stubborn defiance flashed in those willful eyes. Red flushed her cream complexion, which drew his attention to the scatter of freckles across her nose and upper cheeks. They contrasted against her sharp look, and he couldn’t look away.

“What you left or didn’t leave is not my concern,” he said through his teeth. The spasm in his back was continuing to lash at his spine like blazing hot barbed wire. The need to collapse weighed on him, but he refused to give in. Not when he faced an opponent in better physical condition than he. Even if she was overdressed for the heat. To give in to weakness in front of her would be to concede that he couldn’t do his job.

Despite the rigidity of her posture, she couldn’t disguise the concern flickering in her eyes. The last thing he wanted was her sympathy. Not when she stood there with clenched fists. “I’ll leave you to whatever it is you’re doing and seek Tanner out myself.”

Though she turned on her heel and began walking away, Mateo couldn’t just let Claire leave.

“You have no business wandering around the ranch by yourself.” Not dressed like she was—she’d get heatstroke. “The ranch covers several hundred acres, and that doesn’t include the outer pastures.”

Halting, she still held her hands clenched tight as she turned to face him. “Mr. Lopez, was it?”

A shiver of humor evaded the pain storming his system. There was something about the way she framed his name in her perfectly sensible, clipped accent. Melodic and insulting all at once.

“You can call me Mateo.” He managed a smile, though it required him to clench his teeth.

“I’d prefer to keep the address formal in order to stay professional.” The brilliant blue of her eyes turned positively frosty. “That being said, Mr. Lopez, I spoke to a Maria. She directed me to the house, and I chose to stop at the barn on my way there. My mistake. I won’t continue to trouble you.”

The fingers of agony digging into his spine began to twist, and Mateo braced a hand against the door to the stall. White-knuckling, he managed to stay on his feet. A man appeared in the entry to the barn, backlit by the late-day sun, the hat on his head giving away his identity.

“Miss Windsor,” Tanner called as he strode down the aisle. “Maria told me you were here. Was on the way to the house when I saw the car outside.”

Shit. Mateo wanted to curse. Bad enough the foreigner was here. His best friend confirming her story, though—that made it all the worse.

DARK WARLORD by Cynthia Sax in Alien Alphas Boxed Set

Alien Alphas And Gladiator Games
By Cynthia Sax

I have a thing for fictional gladiators. If a story or movie has a gladiator-theme, I’m interested. I’ve watched the Russell Crowe Gladiator movie so many times, I can quote it.
It was fitting that Dark Warlord, the sexy SciFi Romance story I contributed to the awesome Alien Alphas box set, has a gladiator-type feel to it.

What do I love about gladiator-themed stories?

There is something sexy about fictional hand-to-hand combat scenes. I recently took a course on writing them from the wonderful Angela Knight and she shared that writing sex scenes and writing battle scenes were very similar. They are upfront and personal dances consisting of action-reaction, action-reaction. One fighter swings his sword. The other fighter blocks. One fighter steps forward. The other fighter steps back.

Because the fighting is done at close quarters, it is intimate. The fighter can read the other fighter’s facial expressions, can look into his or her eyes. During breaks in the combat, they can speak to each other, exchange taunts.

In Dark Warlord, this dance is even more stimulating as the hero is fighting the heroine. There’s sexual I-want-her-so-bad tension and combat I-might-die-right-now tension whenever contact is made. They desire each other but they are also trying to kill each other. There’s accidental and not-so-accidental touching. The taunts and comments have a sexual edge to them.

And there’s an exhibitionist feel to it. The audience is watching them, stomping their feet and chanting, cheering for their champion. Every touch, every word, every clash could be witnessed. Blades slice through clothing, exposing skin. Sweat beads on foreheads and chests. Fighters grunt. Muscles ripple.

That they might die at any time means the characters are fully in the moment. They’re not thinking about previous battles or what they ate for breakfast. They are concentrating on the other fighter, noting everything about her, the slightest angling of her body, the glint in her eyes, the set of her lips. Every detail is magnified.

This is why I love both reading and writing gladiator-themed romances. What do you love about them?

TEMPTATIONS OF CHRISTMAS FUTURE by Lext Post has Released!

Have you been waiting for the 3rd book in the sexy romance series inspired by A Christmas Carol? Well, your wait is over!

Temptations of Christmas Future (A Christmas Carol #3) has released! This story follows Malcolm and Joy's love story as they work together, though sometimes against each other, to help their supervisor's widow live her own life beyond her late husband.

He set out to prove the future was far worse than she imagined. Now he wished it wasn’t.

Thanks to his shock tactics and pessimistic attitude, Scottish spirit guide Malcolm MacLachlan’s job is on the line. What else did they expect from a former Glasgow Watchman? For his final assignment, he chooses his partner based on the probability of success, and Joy Collingwood is the very best. That he can prove to her the future isn’t all puppies and marshmallows is an added bonus.
Joy is thrilled to help Malcolm, but their different methods threaten the success of their collaboration. If they can’t find some common ground, they’ll fail. What she doesn’t expect is that their common ground will be her bed and her deepest secret will be revealed.
Yet her secrets are nothing compared to Malcolm’s and their revelation could jeopardize everything…including her heart.

There will still be one more book in this series. One of a Kind Christmas (A Christmas Carol #4) will come out in 2018 because somehow the widow has to have her own happily ever after, too :-) I hope you enjoy this sexy take on a classic story.

Always, Lexi
