WHOOPS! HERE I AM! OVER HERE.

...I'm the one still in my jammies at one o'clock in the afternoon...  (sigh)

Hey there, ya'all.  Sorry to be late posting this morning.  I have been virtually attending the 20Booksto50K Conference this week and after four days of drinking from a fire hose, I just dropped into bed last night with not an ounce of energy left to post a blog.  LOL  But the good news is that I'm moving again and thought I would share with you an excerpt from one of my Christmas stories.

Garland Creek Cowboy is the first story in the Legends of Garland Creek, which will eventually become a collection of holiday stories that focus on second-chance romances in the small mountain town of Garland Creek, Arizona.

Enjoy!

WOO HOO…HI!!! (See me waving wildly.)

Well, it’s been a while since I blogged here on HEAT, and I am sooo glad to be back.  I have missed you guys so much!

For those of you who don't know, I stepped away from the writing for a few years to take care of my deaf mother who was struggling with dementia during the pandemic. It was a really tough time, and mom did pass in October of 2021. But I have it on good authority that she’s now having an absolute ball bossing my brother around, organizing skits and plays in Heaven, and beating all her old buddies at Texas Hold ‘Em.

As that chapter of our lives closes, it is now time for mom and I both to move forward and kick up some dirt in the next phase of our existence. So, that said, I’m back on my feet and back in the writing saddle—stronger, healthier, and ready to rock and roll…or country swing, as the case may be.

Which means I have a new book coming out. This one is a bit of a departure from my normal romantic comedies, in that it is a nonfiction book about my time with Mom...a love story of a different type, if you will. It’s written in the same snarky tone as my fiction novels, while dealing with the weightier subject matter of caring for a dramatic deaf woman with dementia…and trust me, she was a drama queen!

Between the heavy subject matter and my smart-ass way of retaining my sanity in the midst of a whirlpool of chaos, it becomes a bit of a roller-coaster ride that I hope you will share with me when it comes out in October. I will be announcing the release date and a pre-order sometime in the next week…watch for it here and on my Facebook page!

I also want to give you just a little peek at something that’s new at my home since we last chatted. There is a new cat in my house—Oliver. (Although he thinks his name is…“Dammit, Oliver!”)

He’s an orange tabby who swings from sweet-and-cuddly-cherub to demon-child-spawn-from-hell…hence, the appended name. My grandson and I were standing in the driveway chatting one day when this little orange fur-ball (about six weeks old) came running out of nowhere, screaming at the top of his lungs with his tail stuck straight up in the air as he ran back and forth between us—as if we couldn’t see or hear him and he was beating through a block wall from another dimension to get our attention.

I snatched him up on one of his hysterical passes by me and he immediately went into frantic air-biscuit-making mode as he continued to scream for help. Our hearts were immediately hooked, and it took about fifteen seconds for us to realize he was now a part of the family.

Had I known at the time that this brazen, loud, pushy little guy would grow into such an energetic, tenacious devil-cat, I might have thought twice.

Oh, who am I kidding? He was freaking adorable and tiny and brave as hell—and hungry. A guy that determined to survive deserves a home with three hots and a cot. There was no turning him away.

But now he’s grown into Dammit, Oliver! And as I write this blog, I’m sitting cross-legged in my big old recliner with my computer in my lap. Dammit, Oliver! has also wedged himself into my lap, beneath my computer, and is working hard to snag my wrists by reaching through and swiping at me from under the front of my computer as his tail jerks and waves over the top of the computer from the back.

Seriously?

Talk about a writer’s block!

Well, folks, that’s a bit of an update from the Kayce Lassiter camp. I’m tickled as hell to be back. Looking forward to hanging with ya’all again and sharing our books and our journeys as we pull on our big girl boots with the pointy toes and kick down the doors to new chapters in our lives.  Be sure to sign up for my new mailing list below, and climb on board in the shotgun seat!  Hugs to everyone and wishes for a Fabulous Friday. Hmmm…that has a nice ring to it.  😊  (I’ll have to see what I can do with that.)

So…that’s my story, catty and crazy, and I’m stickin’ to it.  Hang on tight now ‘cuz we’re gonna go real, real fast!

Love ya,

Kayce

Zombies! Not your average St. Patrick's day.

Zombies, drama, romance…what’s not to love?!

Okay, so this isn't a St. Patrick's day themed post. But I'll toss in a shamrock decorated pooch for the fun of it! Adorable! I hope that fills my requirement of St. Patrick's day festivities. Let's get back to zombies, shall we?

Demon Night by M.J. Haag

Every secret has a price.

It’s a truth that Angel knows too well. Since the hellhounds and infected started to roam, Angel has guarded her secret carefully. But, she’s growing weaker by the day and needs help. In this new plague-ravaged world, the weak don’t survive long, and the useless are quickly abandoned. That’s why Angel’s secret needs to stay secret. If anyone found out about the baby she carried, they’d ditch her in a heartbeat to save themselves.

To make herself an asset, she offers her services as a relationship expert to one of the dark fey, who rose with the hellhounds, in exchange for food. Shax is eager to win over Hannah, and if Angel can help make that happen, just maybe she won’t be kicked out when she has the baby.

Falling for her "client" was never in her plans.

Merry Christmas: "Hot Chocolate" Cookie Cups

I hope you've been having a great holiday season so far! I can't believe Christmas is around the corner. I still have tons to do, so I haven't been reading like normal. So, no recommendations this time. What I have been doing is watching holiday movies while wrapping presents, and in between, shifting cookies from the oven to my mouth. Seriously, Saturday alone I made 10 dozen cookies. I wasn't planning to, but the platters I bought were bigger than expected and the cookies just didn't look right sitting there lonely on empty space.

Speaking of which, I've been making "Hot Chocolate" cookie cups. They are so easy to make and ridiculously delicious. I've linked recipe below. I didn't do the pretzel handles. Seemed too fussy and the pretzels get stale too quickly. But no one seemed to care.

https://www.thegunnysack.com/hot-chocolate-cookie-cups/

And, I was able to send out cards this year! Amazing! This is my son when we were on the island of Oahu. So, I made it festive with a Santa hat. How I wish we could be there right now instead of in cold Wisconsin with no snow to make it pretty. Maybe next year :)

I wish you all a very merry Christmas or <insert beloved holiday>!!!!

See you in 2019!

A beastly good read

It's getting closer to when goblins and ghosts make their appearance. So how about reading a classic tale with a twist?

Check out M.J. Haag's Beastly Tales.

Depravity

Beastly Tales, Part 1
**ADULT ROMANCE**
A classic fairy tale with a new twist, the Beauty and the Beast saga begins with Depravity…

Sixteen year old Benella is concerned with two things–avoiding the two village boys who torment her and scrounging for food to help feed her family. Unfortunately, the best wild fruit and vegetables are near the walls of the estate, a dark misty place inhabited by an unforgiving beast.
When her tormentors lock her behind the massive gates, Benella knows her fate is sealed. Yet, the fate isn’t one she expects. Her encounter with the beast starts a bizarre cycle of bargaining for her freedom, a freedom the beast seems determined to see her lose.
Intended for mature readers due to sexual situations, violence (attempted rape), and moderate language.

Dear Kayce!

HUGE THANKS to The WRANGLER Horse and Rodeo News for their permission to re-post this column originally written for their publication.

Hey gang, great to see y’all back again. Tells me you ain’t right either. But that’s okay. We’re runnin’ in good company ‘cuz there’s a whole bunch of not-right runnin’ through this crowd. Let’s see what’s ailin’ ya today.

Mares: I have a crush on a widowed cowboy who never does more than smile and wave when I ride by his place. How can an old broad get the old boy’s attention without looking silly?

Oh, you don’t want to look silly. Well, that complicates things, don’t it? Ever think maybe he smiles and waves, hoping you’ll stop and chat, but doesn’t bust a move ‘cuz he doesn’t want to look silly? You might both be sittin’ alone on the same side of the fence until hell freezes over if you don’t get off your saddle-duster and take a chance. What’s the worst that can happen? He screws it up ‘cuz he ain’t smart enough to see you’re a catch? If he’s that stupid, why would you want to ride that horse? You’ve got nothing to lose—you win the guy or dodge a bullet. Cowgirl up and ride up his driveway next time you’re in the neighborhood. On the flip-side…You can stay where it’s safe and not risk looking silly. But remember, that’s gonna get you about as far with your old guy as trying to ride sidesaddle on a pig…speaking of looking silly! Besides, pride is one of those replenishing items…you use it, you lose it, you buck up, and it comes back.

Studs: When proposing to that special Cowgirl, how much do I have to spend on a ring? Can I buy it online with free delivery?

If you plan to make it to the alter with that girl, she damn sure better mean as much to you as your horse. How much did you pay for him? Did Amazon deliver him? Or did you hook up the trailer, load your butt into the truck, and drive across the state to look at him before you chunked out lots of your hard-earned cash for the privilege of hauling that animal home? Does the woman of your dreams, your life-mate, and possibly the mother of your children, deserve to have as much spent on her as on your horse? And if you opt to have the ring delivered, buy the insurance so porch pirates don’t get the ring and the girl. On the flip-side…If you don’t make a lot and you’ve found a very understanding woman, you might get away with spending the cost of your saddle. And for those of you who don’t…keep it to yourself. DO NOT get drunk and let it slip, or you’ll be sleeping in the barn next to your horse, with your saddle for a pillow. Just sayin…

That’s my story, silly and senseless, and I’m stickin’ to it. Hang on tight now, ‘cuz we’re gonna go real, real fast!

Love ya,
Kayce

15 Free Reads

We are in the middle of a summer sizzle. Wouldn't you like a few good books to go with your margarita . . . or iced coffee? Yeah, me too. Check out these 15 titles. They're all free until 7/31/18. After that, the promo will disappear.

In other news, Nadia Wolf's Last Hand will be released in less than 30 days. And I'm putting the finishing touches on the Metal Girls Triple Point. Both will mark the end of two awesome series. I'm saddened to see my favorite characters go, but I'm super excited for what's in store for 2019. It'll be worth the wait!

Shifting Sands of Reality.

Hey gang, how are ya’all?  Great, I hope!  Well, I have a fairly sensitive topic I want to talk to ya’all about today, and I hope you’ll take it in the spirit in which it’s meant—in love and frustration with the injustices and challenges in life.

As a writer of fiction, I often find that there can be a fine line between fiction and reality.  So, is there also a fine line between different versions of reality?  Is one person’s reality another person’s fiction?  Or is reality nothing but reality—ever?  And why is it that not everyone experiences the same reality?  Because I can tell you for a fact that they do not.

There is a story that recently caught my eye—primarily because 3 of my closest friends sent me the link to it, knowing how close to home it would come.

My mother, who is a deaf sign language speaker, has been struggling with dementia, which is a terrible disease that steals minds, lives, and family members.  But inside the disease are those moments which are slices of time that make you go HUH?  And you don’t know whether to laugh or cry.  Ever been there?  No?  Then you haven’t taken a ride on the dementia train yet. Because one of the first things you find is that your reality is constantly being challenged, as hers is constantly shifting.

With my mother struggling with this disease, she has done some pretty wonky things that seemed perfectly normal to her.  Like the day she wanted me to find the scotch tape, so she could tape a paper sign to the stove burner telling the new caregiver not to use this burner.  Seriously?  We’re gonna tape paper to the burner we’re not supposed to use because you will get an electrical shock?  The burner works. You just get shocked.  She looked at me like I was nuts when I suggested we just put electrical tape over the knob, so it couldn’t be turned. I explained…paper on a working burner is NEVER a good idea, and what if the wrong knob was accidentally turned on? She stared at me like I’d lost my last marble and asked if we taped down the knob, how would they know which burner shocks you?

Hmmm…I got nuthin’. I had no answer for that question in her reality.  I let it go.

There was another day when I took her to the doctor to discuss the hallucinations she was having where people come to visit her, and they just sit there and stare at her while she talks to them.  She got mad when I brought it up to the doctor and said she didn’t want it fixed.  The shocked doc asked her why and she replied that the people who come to visit are “good company.”

HUH.  Who knew?  I examined the issue further and said, “I thought they never talk to you.”

She replied, “Yes, but they understand sign language.”

Alrighty then.

Her reality.  Not mine.

Again, I got nuthin’.  I can neither argue with, nor confirm that statement.

I’ll admit that there are days when I question my own sanity because the logic path she used to get to a conclusion almost seems reasonable.  Perhaps it’s me who’s actually living in a bizarro world.  It certainly seems that way at times.  Especially when my friends start sending me links to an article about a 92-year-old woman who shot her son because he wanted to put her in a nursing home.  Holy cow, that seems a little extreme.  The guy was 72 himself.  Perhaps she should have filed to have him put in a nursing home instead of going the bullet route. And while we’re thinking this through…who gave a 92-year-old woman access to a gun?

Now, I know that this is NOT a funny situation, but how does that family cope with the size and scope of that loss?  Who’s at fault?  Everyone or no one?  What’s the reality here?

I suggest it’s one of those impossible challenges that life puts in front of us—a challenge where there is no good answer…possibly all versions are reality—or none.  I hope I NEVER have to deal with anything like that, or am ever put in the position where my mind is so gone that I do something so horrendous to someone else.

So, yes, my gun is locked up and I’m sleeping with one eye open any time I stay the night with my mother.  She might look sweet, but I’m not her favorite child right now.

In the meantime, I’ll take whatever laughter I can get.  I have chosen to believe that as the disease steals her mind, God has given me some harmless moments of humor that will help me survive the loss of my mother.  So…if you have a friend going through this, give them the space and the freedom to laugh at the funny moments because the painful ones are somewhere in between the layers of reality, and we need the humor to get us through our ride on the dementia train.  Who’s to say which reality is the right reality, or whether there even is any such thing as reality?

So, lend your friend your shoulder and the benefit of your sane advice because reality, to them, is becoming a fluid situation, something they will begin to question. And who’s to say which is right—the shifting sands of reality or the folly of fiction?

And be sure their guns are locked away!

That’s my story, irreverent and inappropriate, as well as loving and tolerant, and I’m stickin’ to it.  Hang on tight now, cuz we’re gonna go real, real fast!

Love ya,

Kayce

Dear Kayce!

HUGE THANKS to The WRANGLER Horse and Rodeo News for their permission to re-post this column originally written for their publication.

Hey there. It’s me, Kayce Lassiter, and y’all are lookin’ happy as a slick tick on a fat dog.  Tickled to see ya here. So, let’s help out some folks wrestling with a heart issue.

Mares:  I want a tall, slim cowboy with a deep voice, full head of hair, sexy in Wranglers, can two-step, and makes my heart flutter.  Where do I find one of those?

Oooh, that’s a damn tall order. If you’re looking for a guy in the age range where men generally still have their own teeth, hang out anywhere they have horses or livestock. Cowboys and hooves go together. Finding a good set of Wranglers is easy, and you’ll know pretty quick if your heart flutters at his cockeyed smile and “My pleasure,” in a bone-melting Sam Elliott voice. But finding a good head of hair is tougher. You’ll have to get him to take his hat off, without knocking it off. Don’t do that—it won’t end well! Make this a negotiating point to offset a weakness of yours, or a compromise to get those flutters. Sliding your hands over that chrome dome is just as sensual as running your hands through a full head of hair. Give it a whirl. On the flip-side…Unicorn hunting is easier if you’re not set on a young ‘un. Hang out in the waiting room of a medical practitioner specializing in geriatrics or dentures. Arrive early to snag two seats up front—your butt in one, your purse in the other. When the right man shows up, offer him the empty seat. He’ll be grateful not to have to walk too far, and you’ll have a captive audience. Be quick! Not only will the nurse call him pretty soon, but daylight’s a burnin’ on that lifespan. As for the two-steppin’—life’s full of tradeoffs.

Studs:  The gals I date only want me for my money. How do I find a sweet girl who wants the real man beneath the Stetson?

If you are using your money as bait, you’re catching exactly what you’re going after. Fish with your heart and your smile, and you’ll get a whole different catch. Before you head out fishing, be sure you know what a sweet girl looking for a real man looks like—she may not be the prettiest girl in the pond. She might be the one floating alone in the shadows. The best fish aren’t always the ones sparkling in shallow waters. For a better catch, know what you’re fishing for and change your bait. On the flip-side…If this sounds like a lot of work, stick to the sparkling fish in the shallow waters. You might get lucky just through sheer numbers. You’ll only churn up a lot of mud fishing at the deep end.

That’s my story, fantabulous and fishy, and I’m stickin’ to it.  Hang on tight now, ‘cuz we’re gonna go real, real fast!

Love ya,
Kayce

Dear Kayce!

HUGE THANKS to The WRANGLER Horse and Rodeo News for their permission to re-post this column originally written for their publication.

Hi. I’m Kayce Lassiter, and I’m tickled as a coyote in the hen house to be here, where we’ll examine the questions that are burning a hole in your heart. We’ve all had our hearts soar with love, only to crash to the ground in a burning pile of rubble when something went wonky.  Join me for my advice to the love-torn.

Mares:  My boyfriend complains that I spend more time with my horse than with him.  What can I do to make him happy?

I’m torn. Does your man have a valid point? If you are spending more time with your horse, I gotta ask why. I love horses, but they’re not my first choice to keep me warm on a cold winter night. Girlie, you know how to fix this.  When you get the evil eye that says, “I’m feeling neglected,” you just take his hand and lead him up the stairs.  Men are not that complicated. A little country lovin’ fixes most anything.  Dinner’s late or cold?  Lovin’ fixes that.  You flirted a little too much with the waiter at dinner?  Love him up.  Your mother’s coming for a month?  Honey, I’m not a miracle worker. Nuthin’ fixes that. You just gotta power through it.  On the flip-side…if you prefer a horse over your man, it’s time to put that bronc up wet. You don’t love him. Move on. Get yourself a real cowboy—one with a horse of his own—‘cuz a real cowboy is never threatened by a horse.  Just sayin…

Studs:  I have my eye on a gal who won’t give me the time of day. How do I get her attention?

Seriously? Are you a stud or a dud? It ain’t rocket science. If you like her, tell her. Walk up to her in a clean shirt and smellin’ good (maybe with a nice, unwilted flower that you didn’t steal from her flower bed) and say, “Hey, filly, wanna get rowdy?” Okay, don’t do that…she’ll crush that flower against your forehead like a smoked cigarette. If you approach her with confidence and a sweet compliment, your chances will soar—unless you say something stupid about how her eyes or her loins remind you of your horse! So, come up with something nice to say, and just do it. Waitin’ gets you nuthin’…which is exactly what you’ve already got. Like gets like, and brass gets brass. If you want the brass ring, you gotta grow a set of brass ones. On the flip-side…if you can’t man-up enough for the direct approach, go for the desperate friend (remember, like gets like), or get used to keeping Playboy magazines in the bathroom. Again, not rocket science.

That’s my story, loving and looney, and I’m stickin’ to it.  Hang on tight now, ‘cuz we’re gonna go real, real fast!

Love ya,
Kayce

Gotcha!

Happy 2018!!! I hope you have had a fabulous 2018 so far. My year is turning out exactly like last year. I still work. I still clean. I still eat too much. However, I am 42 days sugar free. I didn't want to wait for the new year to begin my resolution. I tend to fail miserably if I set my cap too high. But, amazingly, I made it through the holiday season without one cookie, one slice of pie . . . who am I kidding? One slice? If the pie was sitting in front of me I'd (normally) confiscate the whole thing. Not this year. This year I ate my veggies. Am I craving Oreos right now? Heck yes. But, I think I can thwart those pesky sugar reflexes until I reach my 60 day sugar-free (and substitute sugar free) goal. Here's to 2018. Anything is possible.

Meanwhile, I have been reading and reading and reading. I read the entire Tall, Hot & Texan series by Christie Craig. It all begins with Gotcha! Now, I will say, I'm not entirely sure who edited and formatted the ebook version. It looks like she might have bought back her rights, typed it all over again and republished. That's my theory. Because there were several, reoccurring blunders.  But the story was strong enough to keep me going. And I kept going to the next two novels in the series (which did not have those blunders.)

Macy Tucker was five years old when her beloved grandfather dropped dead in his spaghetti. At twelve, her father left his family in the dust. At twenty-five, her husband gave his secretary a pre-Christmas bonus in bed, and Macy gave him the boot. To put things lightly, men have been undependable.

That's why dating's off the menu. Macy is focused on putting herself through law school—which means being the delivery girl for Papa's Pizza. But cheesier than her job is her pie-eyed brother, who just recently escaped from prison to protect his new girlfriend. And hotter than Texas toast is the investigating detective. Proud, sexy . . . inflexible, he's a man who would kiss her just to shut her up. But Jake Baldwin's a protector as much as a dish. And when he gets his man—or his woman—Macy knows it's for life.

See you next time,
Nicolette Pierce

RED CHRISTMAS, ANYONE?

Hey there! How are ya’all? Good, I hope! It's the season of love, hope, and joy, and I hope you have all threein spades!

Things are fabulous here…cannot wait to see what the new year will bring us. Hope your plans for the new year are as tremendous as mine. Because I’m expecting wonderful things! Huge things! Stupendous things! LOL

So, while I’m on the topic of wonderful things, I just wanted to take a second to fill ya’all in on my Christmas…because I know those of you who have been following my Christmas blogs are all wondering what Kayce got for Christmas this year. (I've already received inquiries. LOL) Did she get a new can opener this year? Or was it a coffee maker? Or did Christmas go in a completely new direction and bring her a new mixer, or a crock pot, or a new truck? And was it RED?

Okay, so Kayce just bought herself a new truck last December, so she really didn’t need another one…and they’re pretty pricey, so that didn’t happen this year. LOL  So, what was under that tree?

Well, for those who don’t follow my blogs religiously, there is a history here. My son, Dustin, has a tremendous (read twisted) sense of humor…and he lives to mess with his mother. (No doubt, it’s payback for all the years I messed with him.) So, in years past, he has bought his mom a number of can openers—RED—and a number of coffeemakers—RED. Two years ago, he had his wife purchase a red coffeemaker for mom (as a joke), knowing she already had one exactly like it. (Poor Heather got caught in the middle on that one. LOL)

So, mom told him last year “no more coffeemakers”. There just wasn’t room on the counter for a third red coffeemaker. And when I get up in the morning, it’s just such a challenge to put one foot in front of the other to get to the kitchen—let alone, having to choose which coffeemaker to use that day! Dustin was crushed, but he decided not to be deterred…after all, a good time was a good time. But, thankfully he understood the limitations of space on the counter and did not get me a new coffeemaker.

Instead, he got me a new red can opener…like I didn’t already have one. Okay, it was a good laugh for everyone—and a good laugh is a wonderful thing—and I didn’t have to make room on the counter for it.

We’re good.

Now we have a new Christmas, and a new gift to buy, to give, to look forward to, and to receive. What will it be this year? And will it be RED?

Well, hell yeah, it’ll be RED!

And bless his heart, my son found a way to both please his mother, and to give her yet another coffeemaker…a RED KEURIG!!!! And I freaking LOVE it!

Woo Hoo…hell yeah, I’ll make room on the counter for that beauty! (But next year I might need a new house, or at least a new kitchen. Just sayin...smile)

Well, folks, it’s been a great year and it was topped off with a fun and fabulous Christmas and a new RED Keurig. Now it’s time to look forward to 2018. I hope you have an outstanding year ahead and that you enjoyed the story about my Red Christmas. I sooo love red!

So, enjoy your New Year celebration and go into the new year with excitement and expectation. Set your goals high and dream it, say it out loud, make it happen! Stay safe, stay happy, and stay fun!

That’s my story, red and ridonkulous, and I’m stickin’ to it. Hang on tight now, ‘cuz we’re gonna go real, real fast!

Love ya,
and the coffee's always on...
