Mistakes Were Made by Lucy Score

As a literary agent, Zoey Mood's career relied on her last client, her romance writing best friend, Hazel Hart.  Zoey had been relieved of her New York office and apartment while banned to Pennsylvania in a rural town where everyone knows everyone and everything about each other.

  

Her new landlord, Gage Bishop who's also an attorney and construction worker, made his upper apartment available for the attractive, yet entirely obnoxious newcomer.

Zoey had a mental list of things she needed to take care of including make enough money to survive, publicize Hazel's new book successfully, and not date any men.  Her taste in boyfriends always backfired.

Quite the opposite for Gage.  He has solid work and wants to settle down with the right type of woman.  

The best relationships can happen as a surprise, when you don't expect it.  All you need is two single people who don't really realize what is good for them.  

This is where Zoey's spontaneous and goofy nature collides with Gage's orderly and carefully planned life through funny and ridiculous events, which allow them to get to know each other.  They attempt to fight off the growing feelings because neither believes they are compatible.  But maybe the differences are more attractive and sustainable than they previously thought.

Many laughs will bring the results!

Spies Don't Fall For Their Neighbors by Meg Easton

 How can a cozy-sounding town like Cipher Springs contain a company of spies and a plumber that need each other?  

Charlie typically spends her day at her computer directing spy operatives out of dangerous positions as they attempt to take out the illegal activities of criminals.  At night, she relaxes with a shower and a dinner with her BFF roommate.  The night her relaxation is interrupted with a wet floor and water spouting out of the wall of her townhome, she is forced to confront her new neighbor, Owen.

The wall in question is also Owen's wall of his temporary townhome.  It doesn't matter that Owen is a totally hot and maybe available man, but it does matter that he's a plumber and is proficient in construction.  

Forced into approaching Owen, Charlie confronts him about the leak in the shared wall.  

The first sparks fly when the wall needs to be taken out to expose and fix the leak.  Now, except for a plastic wall, they share a home.  

Getting to know each other and to diminish the uncomfortable closeness, Charlie leaves Owen small treats, notes, and gifts.  He reciprocates, which allows them to learn fun things about one another.  

Owen plans to be in town only until a historical building makeover is complete, so a relationship isn't welcome.  Charlie has a well-hidden job making it possibly dangerous to allow romance into her life.  The plumbing dilemma may change their minds.    

When the owner of the building Owen is working on appears on Charlie's work radar, things get complicated and their relationship gets closer.  We can only hope the closeness is amicable and tender feelings result versus it exploding like a leaky pipe.

A Very Irish Christmas by Debbie Johnson

 Cassie O' Hara is in a rut.  Keep lamenting the lost groom-to-be, as she is doing, or move on.  So far, this Christmas season she's chosen to keep reminding herself of her loss by watching her almost wedding video.  Right up to when her fiancé, at the altar of course, said he couldn't finish the nuptials.  

Worthless, that's how she feels.  Her sister and her mom aren't any help with their constant reminders of her uselessness.  Cassie comes up with a great idea, egged on by her BFF, and decides to skip the Manhattan Christmas.

With a small inheritance from her grandmother, Nora, she books a trip to England for a month with hopes of a vintage and magical Christmas.  Her reservation at Whimsy Cottage should do it.

Whimsy cottage is cold, dusty, and with sheets over the sparse furniture.  Now what?

The nearest pub should be warm and offer food.  If the dog stalking her on her trek down the street signifies the coming month in England, she might be in trouble.

A tall, gregarious, and handsome Irish man, Ryan, takes Cassie under his wing, advising her to contact Charles, Lord Bancroft, about a suitable room until the Whimsy Cottage is prepped.

Ryan is the local handyman, and Charles is the local lord.  They both have Cassie's well-being in hand.  She helps Ryan clean the cottage along with deep discussions over a pint or two of Guiness.  Charles offers his mansion during cleanup time including deep discussions and plentiful warmth and food.

Cassie hasn't had a legitimate date in three years, and now two eligible and fine men want her attention.  Who wins her heart and how does he triumph over the other?  Not to mention the country she must choose!  

Love is a wonderful experience surrounded by snow, lights, and decorations of an English Christmas.

The Christmas Breakup Club by Luci Beach

 Anyone with the name of "Holly" cannot have a bad holiday.  I just made up that rule.  That's the only rule I have to make up because the story takes care of itself from here.

Newly dumped by her boyfriend, Holly agrees to cat-sit for her boss over Christmas.  Holly's mom is in Scotland and her father in Tasmania, which are both too far from England.  She'd be an inconvenience in their style.  A cozy apartment above a department store all rigged up for an English Christmas with a fury friend will do her just fine.  

The posh apartment is under remodeling, but at least there's a microwave for her Christmas TV dinner.  The one thing Holly needs to look into is the drip from the ceiling otherwise she'd not leave the couch.

Upstairs is another apartment with Joe as the tenant.  He's also the handyman for the whole building and seems to be slacking on his duties.  Holly will make sure he changes his work commitment.

Fixing the leak leads to many strange adventures, riding a sleigh in the department store underneath them, strolling the Christmas lit streets, and microwaving dinner together.  

Until Eleanor invades.  She's Joe's (ex?) girlfriend.  Handling a perfect cat, a leaky ceiling, and mischief in a closed department store is one thing, but dealing with a possible girlfriend leaves Holly wondering if she's wrong about liking the man upstairs too much.  

If only she knew what Joe was thinking.  Maybe he can change Holly's rules for the Christmas Breakup Club.

The Do Over by Sharon Peterson

 My last review was beautiful and serious, so now it's time for a lot of fun.  A kettle full of laughs is necessary to get through the dingy, brown days of late winter.

Perci is a people-pleaser, starting with her mom, and then her boyfriend, Brent, and all others. 

Apparently, Brent is too hard to please. 

I want to tell you, as a reader, how Brent broke-up with Perci, but I can't.  I had to put the book down and wipe the tears of laughter from my eyes.  For Perci, I want to smack him, but I can't deny the humor.  

She has a change in her romantic relationship, changes her job because she works with Brent, and the other life changes are all done by keeping a sense of humor in life. 

Perci, in her late twenties, is my kind of woman.  She loves her forget-the-rules grandma, loves chocolate, and is working on the idea of loving herself.

Hot-Man-Next-Door, Nate, gets involved.  And a good thing he does.  He's accidentally what Perci needs and wants and should have.  With all the sudden changes in her life and happenings in the family, Nate pulls Perci through with the best of kisses and tulips (two-lips).  Those are kind of the same, but not really:)

The Chemistry of Love by Sariah Wilson

 Chemistry may not hold interest to all, but chemists are people with the same feelings, ambitions, and heartache as anyone else.  

Anna Ellis loves her nerdy job as a cosmetic chemist.  She has her own lab at home, put together dollar by dollar in the most frugal way she is able to manage.  Her lab at work is complete with a best friend, a demeaning boss, and the desirably handsome son-of-owner, Craig Kimball, she rarely gets to see.  

Anna's goal, outside of her creations with chemicals, is to capture the love of  Craig.  She's sure he vividly remembers a parking lot encounter two years prior.

Anna, Anna who?  Craig is less enamored than Anna could imagine. Instead, she's invited to his engagement party where he proposes to Marco's, his brother's, ex-girlfriend.  

Marco hatches a plan to give payback to Craig, help Anna attain her true love (she thinks it's Craig-just a reminder), and help the makeup company they all work for thrive.

This involves a pretend relationship, which has to appear authentic between Marco and Anna.  So many emotions have to be incorporated either by choice or necessity.  Lust, Greed, jealousy, honesty, anger, and love.  Some are great, and others not so great.  

As the reader, you cannot tell the characters what to do, unfortunately.  You have to wait and see if they find the right chemistry with the right people.  A little hand-wringing and urging from the sidelines might help happiness and love prevail, even for the one who smells like sodium sulfate (the bad egg!).

Always be careful on what you recreate, though.  Sometimes secrets escapes and add to the dilemma.  Let's hope Abbie and Matt realize love is still plentiful and worth the unexpected dry spell.

An exciting reconnection of a love that finds fault, yet can still rekindle if it's true.

Cross the Line A Boston Love Story by Julie Johnson

Having an elite family comes with unexpected danger for Phoebe.  She's the advertising agent for her father's large construction company, which has enemies.

Nate has moved into protective services and watches who circles her.  She is clueless to why he unexpectedly appears and disappears, refusing to say more than two words or get too close to her.

Well, that ends when he needs to be around more often as the vultures are circling.  A casual bump, stares caught, and tremendous heat building up when they're near each other is stuffed down by Nate.  But Phoebe, it could be promising.  

Phoebe finds herself in a compromising position and it's a shame to progress under such circumstances, but she'll use it to her heart's advantage.  Nate has to put his talents to work to save her, and we can only hope it pushes him over the line!

People We Meet On Vacation by Emily Henry

 Vacation is Poppy's favorite activity.  She does it on a whim, cheap or expensive, she writes about it, magazine and blog, and now she can't figure out why it's "just not the same".

Once a year her best friend, Alex, and her picked a low-budget, out-of-the-ordinary trip.  Spontaneous and whacky are the the best ways to describe everything they do, yet two years ago the trips together ended and they haven't talked.  No discussion of why they ended.

Poppy lives in New York and writes for a travel magazine and considers it her dream job.  Although, she's lost a bit of that carefree, happy attitude that exotic places have brought her.

Alex lives in her hometown in Ohio. He's bookish, quiet, and a teacher at their old high school.  

She misses her best friend and takes the chance to send a text, hoping he'll reply positively.  Maybe they could try one of those fantastic, cheap vacations like old times.  

The question is:  How can they jump into another vacation without talking so long and rekindle the missing thread of their happiness in life?

The key is what happened two years ago.  If they discover the problem, can they enrich their relationship and take it another step?  I hope so!

Not You, It's Me by Julie Johnson

 It's great when you hear a woman using the line "It's not you, it's me" instead of the man.  Gemma Sommers is well acquainted with saying that.  She doesn't believe love is a real emotion that she can attain after many pathetic dating experiences.

Such as at the beginning of her story, she's dating her apartment neighbor who can barely pay attention to her.

This is evident when Mr. Gorgeous, Chase Croft, saves her on screen with a smothering, in a good way, kiss.  Her boyfriend is standing right next to her and doesn't even notice, by the way.  The rest of Boston sees it.

Gemma has a creative job at an art gallery where she sells exclusive art.  Her apartment is small and full of color just as she wants it.  Her funds are low, but she's pleased with her lifestyle.

Chase has a different type of problem.  His bank account is exploding, woman love him, and his penthouse is spacious.  He thinks he doesn't have room for the right woman, yet he seeks out Gemma as his art consultant.

Sounds easy for them to fall in love, but Gemma is short on the trust theory and Chase has a meddling family and doubts of his own ability to run his business and treat Gemma in the way she deserves.

It's a fun read as the insecurities of each are hashed out, thrown against the wall, and hope to reach the finish line in a compatible manner!

The Paid Bridesmaid by Sariah Wilson

 Being a paid bridesmaid has its perks and its secrets.  Rachel Vinson's current gig is stationed in Hawaii, and all she has to do is be Sadie's BFF.  They may have only met at the start of Sadie's wedding planning, but the form she completed gave Rachel full knowledge of what their friendship contains.

Well, there might be a few cracks in the armor.  

The best-man, Camden Lewis, meets Rachel on the first day, first hour, of the week-long wedding rendezvous.  A tiny crack splits in Rachel's planning. 

Camden has a big account being finalized in his software company.  As pretty and charming as Rachel is, he's not sure she knows Sadie enough to be the maid-of-honor, let alone her BFF.  Maybe Rachel is a business spy.

Rachel truly wants her clients to have magical and perfect weddings.  There are all kinds of reasons a bride doesn't have enough good friends to stand-up in their weddings.  Darned if she is going to let Camden reveal the disguised bridesmaids.  He's so handsome and nearly perfect, though.

Must stay away from Camden.  All work and no play. 

We'll see how well that works.  

So many goofy and funny mix-ups throughout the week.  A weekend is much easier for Rachel to deceive the party goers.  It's no help that her heart is working against her.  Camden is having a hard time between his assumption of a spy in the midst and the beautiful woman he has to stand up with.

A warm and charming mix-up and match-up making new friends and new romances!

Sorry Not Sorry by Sophie Ranald

 Charlotte has it made, living in London, a best friend, good employment at a fast paced investment firm, and...  The future is ready to change whether she wants it to or not.

Her bestie and roommate, Maddy, is getting married to Henry, the other roommate.  The household is disrupted.  Charlotte is the "can-do" person at the firm, and it's getting so busy that one person is too few to do all the office work.  

Maybe she'll share her spare time with a boyfriend.  She'll have to find one of those, too.

Never one to poo-poo new ideas, she finds and interesting blog called "Sorry Not Sorry", author anonymous.  It's all about taking chances, doing something different, and finding your dream man.  Impossible, but let's just see what the blog suggests.

Charlotte meets her new roommates.  Adam is unsocial and stays in his room doing IT stuff, and Tansy seems too perfect to approach.  Let's try the boyfriend challenge.

After many nerve battling activities suggested by Sorry Not Sorry, Myles falls into her lap at the office.  He's amazing in so many ways.  Ah, but there's always a hitch.  

Myles treats Charlotte like a queen, trips, gifts, gourmet dinners, and amazing physical contact.  

She also gets to know her mates.  Adam isn't such a sour puss, and Tansy always appears when Charlotte needs an ear.  Adam doesn't kiss too badly, she discovers at a drunken party.  Xander at the office knows how to hold a door for a lady and help her out of a mountain of work.  

A few too many men on her chart?  They all have a purpose, and will one actually be worth the title of "my boyfriend"?  And who could possibly write the blog, give original advice that just might have results, and did the author end the blog happily?  

I know who I want Charlotte to end up with and I didn't even consider who the blog author might be, but it's fun!

The Devil Drinks Coffee by Angela Corbett writing as Destiny Ford

 Not truly about the devil, but rather let's decide which hot hunk, Spence, Dylan, or Hawke will win the independent journalist's interest.  Kate wonders how she gets so lucky to be the center of so many men's attention.  Yet, she has a murder to solve before anybody gets in her pants.

After a breakup, Kate takes her career back home to Branson Falls, Utah.  Kate doesn't follow the Mormon practices, and she does drink coffee which is secretly called "hot chocolate" as a cover.  The local gossip tree, The Ladies, has it in for her from the start.  But Kate doesn't care because Spence hires her at his newspaper.  He's charming, good-looking, and easy to work with.  Is he the one?

Chelsea Bradford is found floating in Emerald Lake, and Kate can't believe the police are correct in labeling it an accidental drowning.  One thing Kate learned while away at college is that "boob manipulations" can go a long way with convincing men to do what she wants.

Hawke, a mysterious PI, gloms onto Kate immediately.  He wants to be partners in solving this alleged crime.  The locals don't know much about him, probably because the most notable thing is his tight ass and omnipotent presence.  Will she get extra close to Hawke?

And the player comes out to play.  Dylan, local politician, claims Kate as his girlfriend because he wants to find out more about Chelsea's death.  Maybe he's settled down and wants to get serious.

It's a fun story, letting the crime get in the way of wandering eyes and hands.  Not knowing which man really gets Kate's attention in all the right ways is a mystery in itself.

By A Thread: A Grumpy Boss Romantic Comedy by Lucy Score

A delightful read for the oncoming summer!
Dominic Russo works on a ton of problems which gives him a hard shell.  He's determined to be nothing like his father, a playboy with all women.  He steps into the job his dad had at the family fashion magazine.  Let's not forget that Dominic hasn't been with a woman for a year.      
Ally speaks her mind in a humorous manner.  At least I find it funny.  She probably thinks she's saying it like it is.  Suddenly, fired from her main job of many, a glorious woman steps in and tells her to show up for work at her business.
Dressed up in her resale clothes, they still look stylish, Ally shows up for whatever job is waiting for her.  
She has to work with Dominic!  It's his mother who hired her.
Immediate disdain is slung between the two.  It creates fuel for an unexpected attraction.  How can that be?
The banter between Dominic and Ally is laughable.  They both realize there's an undercurrent of lust going on that they pretend doesn't exist, and it adds fuel to their emotional side.
All Ally's time is devoted to her many jobs. Dominic is apprehensive to exhibit a personal side.  So where does this leave the festering "I want to jump you" portion of their minds? I'm greatly amused along their trip to accept a love they try to demolish.

Ache for You by J.T. Geissinger

Most the time when we read, it’s a quiet time.  When you occasionally chuckle, snort, catch your breath, and have a smile cracking the corners of your face, you know you’ve found a delightful, lovely romance!

How can we enjoy reading the devastation that comes with groping in the dark for a true, trustworthy, and honest romance?  The characters.  The characters tug us in.

Kimber, who’s name is explained through her personality, has one catastrophe after another.  I’d have to say, the majority involve men.  She starts in San Francisco, the perfect wedding massacred, she somehow gets to Florence, Italy after buying a ticket she doesn’t use, informed of another disaster back home, then meets more disaster in the form of a gorgeous Italian designer.  By the way, she designs upscale woman’s dresses, so how bad can it be to meet a famous designer??

Matteo, the famous designer, meets Kimber at the airport.  Love at first sight?  No one admits to that.  Plus, he doesn’t know her name, she doesn’t ask his, and they ultimately aren’t on the same flight by his design.  When they end up at the identical Italian destination, sparks fly. 

I can’t help but laugh when Kimber states her opinion on anything.  The words she uses would make a dog blush.  Yet, Matteo loves the challenge.

Kimber is not in the mood for another man who makes love promises.  Strike one for Matteo.  She doesn’t believe him, trust him, or think that Matteo’s business plan is in her best interest.  Strike two.  He might do better in softball where there’s four strikes.

He has his own allegiance to avoid commitment.  Maybe any interest Kimber lets slip his way is strictly in the form of rebound or revenge on men.  Granted, when she tells him where his dick belongs, that Cinderella can kiss her ass, or simply claim that her uterus betrays her, he falls farther into the whole of eternal love.

I want to tell you the whole story, but the better the book, the less I want to reveal.  We have stubborn, comical, honest, desperate, and generous souls at stake in this novel.  The unique predicaments at home and abroad sucked me into the lives of Kimber, Matteo, and their friends and family!  I begged the book to let them all live and love a lot…

Don’t put the book down!

Royal Shade of Blue (the modern royals series) by Aven Ellis

A fun and light-hearted romance can capture any readers attention!

Clementine is a student at Stanford, studying art and antiques.  Her social life is quiet, or should I say, non-existent.  She has a well-guarded, by her family, former medical condition, which keeps her “better safe than sorry” on her excursions.  Then a message on Instagram catches her attention. Can’t hurt her without a physical connection.

CP messages Clementine just to tell her she’s incredibly interesting, and no, he’s not a stalker.                                       

Messaging back and forth, an intense interest grows between the two. CP tells her he’ll come from the UK to meet her.

How exciting!  Will it happen?  Will an online relationship bring a man eleven hours by air to Northern California just to be disappointed in her? 

Such a sweet and complete romance blossoms.

Until Clementine finds out who CP is.  Maybe it doesn’t matter.  He’ll fly her to England to meet his family, who everyone knows or at least has heard of.

The perfect romance does have a few snags along the way.  One member of CP’s family, his Mum (can’t give away her title!), doesn’t feel Clementine fits in.  Clementine’s family has a rough time believing the incredible connection is for real, and she has to make sure CP likes her for herself.  CP wants to make sure she stays herself.

So many issues, so little time to ferret out the bumps.  Love can do wonderful things, though!

The Girl with the lower Back Tattoo by Amy Schumer

I had downloaded this e-book in a flurry of looking for books for a long plane flight taken in September.  I’m not a fan of flying.  Not because I’m afraid or get sick, but rather I find it extremely boring and difficult to sit for nine or ten hours in a suffocating chair.  My legs get antsy and begin to twitch along with rolling my head (not eyes) around in order to create the illusion of, maybe, walking or moving.

Regardless, I picked Amy Schumer’s bestselling tell-it-all, hilarious account of life adventures.  I didn’t know who she was (really, I don’t get out much and forget to watch all the TV I plan to see) and was surprised to see her book plastered in the airport bookstores.

I thought, “Shoot (shit!), I wanted to pick a book not everyone had heard of and be able to write a review to inform the unknown.”

Once in a while I have to join the masses and read the same thing everyone else is reading. 

 So I did.

The novel is filled with funny, lude, and say-it-like-it-is stories.  It will cure depression (I don’t have that, but I’m sure it can help), it can be read in pieces when you need a laugh.  Each chapter is a story.

I don’t recommend it for the bring-to-bed book simply because you’ll laugh and want to keep reading instead of being put to sleep!

And yes, there are some sexy encounters, so I dare to call it a romance of life, fun, and people!

Canada Square- Love in London #3 by Carrie Elks

A delightful story set in London- that’s where the Canada Square comes from- where a young lady named Amy Cartwright decides to do something for herself.

Always making excuses and thinking something’s wrong with herself, Amy has had it!  She dumps her boyfriend, who is a real jack-, and concentrates on her degree and upcoming internship with an exclusive London business.

With her new attitude, she meets her new boss, Callum Ferguson.  She’s not taking any crap from anyone, including a Callum who likes his coffee after nine am.

Callum’s a hard worker, basing his existence on work and getting things done.  The sassy new intern sparks an interest in his manhood, mind and body, so it’s awfully handy to need her help on a regular basis.

Carrie Elks writes a lighthearted, yet real story that I thoroughly enjoyed.  The characters’ dialogue describes their personalities along with the setting.  It reminded me of the Bridget Jones’ Diary movies, so if you love a fun romance, please read!  (Yes, I did see the new movie and it’s great, too).

F*ck Love by Tarryn Fisher

I know Valentine's Day just ended and in no way do I want you to feel the way Helena (character) feels about love.  The title says it all until better things come around.

I am completely into reading new authors and new books this year.  I hit a gold mine with this romantic comedy by Tarryn Fisher. 

Helena is the sweetest, not prettiest according to her best friend (her BFF, Della, is wrong), caring, understanding, and messed up young lady. 

Helena dates Neil, who has his own issues, big ones.  Della is in love with Kit Isley, and they have issues, nearly bigger ones.

What could go wrong with two couples that hang out together and are BFF’s?  Shall I number the problems??

When things start to unravel between Helena and Neil, the first thing Helena thinks is What. The.  F*ck.  Yes, she has a potty mouth that works for her.  I won’t tell you what’s wrong with Neil, I’ll let Helena in her words because she does it so much better.

The other problem lies with Kit and Della, or is it Helena and Della, or maybe Helena and Kit?  It’s all in there. 

Helena, I love her, does get a match up with the right man at the right time prompted by whiskey, babies, dreams, a cult leader (brief meeting), ex-girlfriends ( of Kit’s), Florida and Washington, beige clothes, allusions from art . 

Wish I could give you more plot, but that would give this delightful story away.  You have to read F*ck Love and I promise you will laugh and cry along with Helena.  And that’s not a joke!

Flirting with Felicity is a delightful story of a little kindness goes a long way.

Felicity Wright has taken her passion of cooking to a grand level as the head chef of an historical hotel’s restaurant.  She’s a people pleaser and loves the fact that she’s able to support herself and her father who needs hourly nursing due to a head injury from a car accident. 

Her main concern is living her life and taking care of her father.  Nothing can change her mind on her responsibilities.

Felicity can’t fight Blake’s high power attorneys, so he makes a deal with her.

The deal includes spending a lot of time together and keeping the unwanted hormones in check.

I had fun reading this and chuckling at Felicity’s and Blake’s attempts to keep all things business because we well know that the heart has a mind of its own!  Not only that, but it’s a maze of considerations for both to be happy with the end result in business and love.

Gerri Russell also treats her readers to a collection of Felicity’s recipes.  I did try the homemade mac and cheese.  It was as rewarding as the storyJ
